19-20 Transfers
McGriff would have to sit out another year if he transferred, as he has already taken classes for a year at SJU (a la Sid Wilson). It looks unlikely that the new transfer rules are going to be in place before the next school year. Does he want to go to college for 2 years without actually being able to play basketball? Is CMA comfortable forcing that on a student athlete?
Transfer waivers historically fly when kids are moved out. Not suggesting anything, just pointing that out.

I know it has been talked about, but the staff is making Perez a priority and he wants to be at St. John’s, the only problem is, is that there is not a scholarship open and if you know Anderson at all you know he will not tell a guy to leave, he has built his foundation on trust but in this case I think he will have to, whether you ask McGriff to move on or Caraher, Caraher wants to be here bad and I think he can be a huge 4 year player, and McGriff wants to be here also. Although it always solves itself out and LJ might end up going Pro, I think it will all depend on McGriff. It’s going to be a interesting story. Perez is the real deal and would help this team tremendously in 2021. Thoughts?
LJ has to make a decision here and if McGriff was going to, that should have been settled a while ago. I wouldn’t push Caraher anywhere. He’s a solid part of the team and bought into everything Anderson wanted him to do and was productive. Bottom line is that LJ needs to make a prompt decision which way he’s going. If the staff doesn’t think McGriff can contribute that’s another story but none of us know what the deal is.
You don’t force our best player’s hand. LJ has earned the right to take his time.

Can any of our guys take on an academic scholly?

I don’t think you can let Carahar go. He’s tough.

I just can’t see McGriff, at his size, thrive in the BE. And there’s way to much comp for McG to get any PT.

Wake Forest guard Jahcobi Neath plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, a source tells @247Sports. Could stay, but wants to explore his options. Averaged 5.2 PPG and 2.2 APG as a freshman.

Perez plays a tough game. He is fearless. He can score a bunch of ways. He can beat u off the dribble, hit a jumper and he can back down a smaller player. He has a similar mentality to Dunn. NYC tough. Would LOVE to add him.

In all likelihood the NBA Draft won't be until August. At this point now I'm sure LJ has been told everything he needs to hear about his game from the 'experts'. I'm on record saying waiting could be a tough blow in terms of filling a spot later.

When it comes to Perez however he's currently a sit out transfer. Gut feeling is NCAA won't approve one time transfer for this season but year after. So then we have to wait on pins and needles as we have seemed to do so well for years in him getting a waiver for this year.

The local waiver angle may work but if the staff likes him then it’s not a big issue. The issue is whether LJ is gonna come back and if not, where Perez’s ship will come from. Agree that we don’t have the luxury waiting forever on LJ. He should be able to make an educated decision by now. SJU needs to work on their timeline, not his.

If it isn’t LJs spot he’s taking then I think sitting the year would work perfect.

Depending on who leaves. If hes replacing someone who was not a contributor next year, ok. But then I wonder what that means for 21 class full of SG's.

I’m not in the know but I can’t imagine a ship comes from anywhere other than LJ not returning or McGriff heading somewhere else.

Honestly shocked McGriff is staying for now...realistically he is 5'8 or 5'9 and just don't see where he fits although he seems like a stand up kid. I guess it's a good problem to have since it indicates he loves SJU and players genuinely don't seem to want to leave now as long as they have a chance for some PT. I do hope we get Perez...seems like the type of kid who would kill us in Mullin yrs. The only concerning thing I see is that he seemed to tank against almost every big time program in games and he shoots 34%. Yikes...maybe he's a volume scorer like Dunn?

I think the kid has great killer instinct and is skilled. Would love to have him and honestly it shouldn’t negatively effect landing a good sg for 21 with Perez who enters as a junior on board. We will lose plenty by then and it shouldn’t be a deterrent. Every higher level school has multiple wings/sg’s to contend with when they’re recruiting players. We can’t always be the school where kids only come here because they get carte blanche PT.

“Things did not go as great for Perez and Gardner-Webb this past season. As a sophomore, the guard put up similar stat lines (15.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 4.2 apg) compared to his freshman campaign. However, Perez’s efficiency took a massive dip, shooting just 34% from the field overall and 25% from three-point range. He had a 35-point effort against Winthrop and was a point shy of a triple-double against UT-Marin (had one as a freshman versus Savannah State) but struggled to be the team’s No. 1 offensive option overall.

Perez didn’t finish the season with the Bulldogs, leaving the team for “personal reasons”

If we get the freshman Perez, I'm all in. If it's the soph Perez, I'm meh. If it's somewhere in btwn (most likely outcome) then he's a solid rotation type player.

I think he tried to probably do too much and carry the team as a soph. He’s certainly capable of more. Have no doubt Mike Anderson could tap into his talent and get the most out of him for 2 seasons.

Perez had a better group of players around him year one on 23-12 NCAA T team. GW struggled year two.

Why are we showing no respect to McGriff. The kid is a great on-ball defender with a crazy good handle. He is just the type of guy you use to wear down an opposing point guard for a few minutes here and there. He seems like a really good kid who was very excited to come to St. John's. Why would we not want a skilled back-up for the next 4 years? So he's a little small; he wouldn't be the first sub 5'-10" kid to make a meaningful contribution. I'll be rooting for you, John.

Hey Gabelmc .... how many games have you seen McGriff play in to support your opinion ?

Is one real PG and two combos safe enough to get us through what should be a good next season if McGriff leaves?

What if he leaves and Posh gets injured? A promising next season might take a big hit.

Tough situation all around, because even if Caraher never scored another point, I'd still want him around. He lost like 30 pounds trying to get in shape for the new style of play. I'd ask him to be team captain before asking him to leave.

And having LJ is certainly better than not having him.

I think Caraher has a 4.0. Maybe get creative with academic scholarship, although he'd have to pay for his own team meals.
