Possibly the West Virginia game in early December is part of the holiday festival

Cragg:

We are announcing non-conference soon ... Big East schedule around Labor Day. Hopefully sooner but very complex with TV and pro arenas. Stay patient!

This was a really bad team last season, going only 5-24.

Despite that record, they only allowed 68.6 PPG last year, so it will be an interesting contrast of styles.

Their head coach is Bill Herrion, who had some success at Drexel in the mid 1990s. I actually was pushing for him to be a serious candidate, after we fired Fran. However, he opted to stay out of the big time, despite multiple offers (I think he turned down Rutgers once too, among others).

Per the Mohegan Sun Arena page, game times for our tournament, are as follows (the teams that make visits to the campus sites, also have there own Tournament in the evening):

Sat. 11/23:
Noon - UMASS vs. Virginia
2:30 PM - St. John's vs. Arizona St.

Sun 11/24:
1:00 PM - Championship Game
3:30 PM - Third Place Game

I'm guessing TV dictates that the Championship game be played first.

QUEENS, N.Y. (July 30, 2019) – An NCAA Tournament rematch, a potential showdown with the defending national champs, a marquee matchup at MSG and a date with Arizona in San Francisco highlight the 2019-20 non-conference schedule for St. John’s Men’s Basketball in its first season under Head Coach Mike Anderson.

Fresh off a 21-win season and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015, the Red Storm will play 13 non-conference games in November and December. Eight of those contests will take place at Carnesecca Arena, the on-campus home of the Johnnies. The Red Storm will host one non-conference tilt at Madison Square Garden and play three neutral site games, two in Connecticut and one in California.

Following an exhibition matchup against Queens College on Oct. 30, the Red Storm will open the 113th season in program history with five-straight games in Queens. The Johnnies will kick off the campaign with a Nov. 6 clash against Mercer before hosting Central Connecticut State on Nov. 9 and New Hampshire on Nov. 12.

After playing three times in the span of six days, the Johnnies will host a pair of campus site games in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament to wrap their season-opening homestand. The Red Storm will welcome defending America East Champion Vermont on Nov. 16 before Columbia makes the short trek from Manhattan to Queens for a Nov. 20 showdown.

The Red Storm will hit the road for the first time the following weekend, playing in the semifinal and final rounds of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Presented by Citi at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The Johnnies will face Arizona State in the opening game on Nov. 23 before playing either reigning national champion Virginia or Massachusetts the following day. St. John’s and the Sun Devils will meet for the third time in as many seasons, as the two squads clashed in December of 2017 at STAPLES Center before squaring off in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio, this past March.

After their stay in Connecticut, the Johnnies will begin another five-game homestand with matchups against local foes Wagner and Saint Peter’s on Nov. 30 and Dec. 3, respectively.

On Dec. 7 or 8, the Red Storm will make its 2019-20 Madison Square Garden debut, welcoming Bob Huggins and West Virginia to “The Mecca” for the Johnnies’ inaugural game of the BIG EAST/Big 12 scheduling alliance. The Red Storm and the Mountaineers will meet for the 38th time in the history of the two programs. St. John’s owns a 9-6 advantage in home games against its former BIG EAST foe.

After battling with the Mountaineers in Midtown, the Red Storm will then play its final non-conference home games at Carnesecca Arena, hosting Brown on Dec. 10 and Albany on Dec. 18.

The Johnnies will wrap non-conference action on the West Coast, facing off with Arizona on Dec. 21 in the Al Attles Classic presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame. The event, which will feature four marquee college basketball matchups, will be held at San Francisco’s Chase Center, the brand new home of the Golden State Warriors.

Not as great of a schedule as it would appear to the untrained eye if you ask me. Still lots of crap at the bottom weighing it down.

Moving forward, St. John's would like to open season at Garden against a premier opponent, I've been told. Tried to happen this year, but didn't work out. #sjubb

I love the idea of having a big MSG game to open the season. Would be great for Fox, too. Hopefully it happens every year starting in 2020. These are the type of things we need to do if we want to elevate our program on the national stage.

As for next year, the schedule is impressive. It won't be like last year where we needed to go 12-1. We'll play 4-5 good teams (Vermont, ASU, hopefully UVA, WVU, Arizona). Last year we only had VCU and a very tough game at Duke.

Great work on the schedule. Holiday Festival would have been nice. Duke also would've been nice, but we've known for a while that wasn't happening. Only one complaint: no Barclays games. Not that I enjoy Barclays, but those games do count as neutral games for us and we get more in attendance than the opposing fan bases. I know the crowds have been lame, but a neutral advantage is still great and we always seem to win there.

Not a great schedule, but if we miss the NCAA Tournament on the basis of our schedule, and nothing else, I will consider that a success for year 1.

Obviously, Mohegan Sun is a nice field, and WVU is still a major conference team, with a great coach. Arizona will be tough, as will Vermont. The problem is that, while programs like Mercer, Albany, and even WVU have had sustained success in the past, they are all coming off down years, and probably won't be that good this year, either. We'll see, though. VCU turned out to be a much better win last year, then most of us thought it would be at the time.

I am bothered somewhat by lack of a true road game. I always feel you should get at least one in before the start of conference play. I'm sure that will be rectified in the Big 12 Challenge next year.

My concern going forward, is that this is what CMA usually does. He prefers to spend November and December working on his pressure defense, and finding the right combinations for it. They have played in some good events in the past, but not always. It's protected him WRT not having a losing season, but it might also have been a factor in Arkansas never getting past the Round of 32 in the NCAAs (some of his teams may have been underseeded due to the schedule).

That being said, I'm OK with this, for year 1. Patrick Ewing's decision to soften up Gtown's non-league schedule his first year has appeared to pay dividends, and maybe this will do the same for us (it's much tougher then that non-league schedule Georgetown played 2 years ago).

Also, I would like a time for the Vermont game soon, if possible. Need it to be early afternoon, for reasons I've stated earlier in the thread.

Also, expect your season ticket cost to rise, since we have 20 home games this year, compared to just 18 last year (counting exhibitions).

Hopefully, the cost stays around the same on a per game basis, but if the reports are true that we will have 7 MSG games this year (compared to 5 last year), I wouldn't expect that to happen.

This is why I love the installment plan, for payment.

I would think our AD would have input into our schedule as well.

Yes some cupcakes on there but plenty of opportunities for good wins. Also important to remember the BE will be much stronger giving plenty of opportunities for quality wins.

Moon Mullin,

It appears that you are correct, though I have to believe that Mullin was behind the Arizona game (in San Francisco), and the CCSU game (coached by Donyell Marshall).

What is the connection to Donyell Marshall???
They were teammates on the Warriors. That was the late part of Mullin's career, and the early part of Marshall's.
