RJ Luis

Or too young to remember Alph Bangura or a plethora of other players who looked great in the uniform, had pro bodies and athleticism but who had low bb IQ, poor fundamentals and were not basketball players. These players can make great athletic plays or moves, but are not consistent and are net negatives on the floor. I am willing to trust RP but I have seen this before (too often); hopefully I will be proven wrong. If RP is going to be a portal guru, it is hard t believe he can't do better (ie, a guy who is just as athletic BUT who can play the game more proficiently). For now, let's just win games.
Bangura tore it up after he left St. John’s.

Idk the sir som comparison is right. Dom always played within himself. I don’t recall him ever ‘hurting’ the team as RJ does.
You must not remember his first three years. He did whatever he wanted and played completely out of control. He was always stellar on defense though and created a bunch of easy points himself and others on that end. When he got moved to center his senior year it forced him to get off the perimeter and he became a real mismatch.

RJ plays within himself but he’s a 1 on 1 guy. He has to be much more aware of the effect that has on his teammates. Driving and kicking is definitely within his skill set and he hasn’t shown that yet. He has to go out of his way to include others if he wants to play this way. Nobody wants to stand around and watch someone dribble for 20 seconds hoping to get a last second touch. He also has to pick his spots better. He’s only a soph so I’m willing to bet he grows substantially as a player.

Not sure a journeyman career in the G-league and overseas is tearing it up, but he did play professionally on that level for a pretty long time.
Just seem to remember wherever he went right after leaving us he averaged like 18-20 points per or something like that point being he wasn’t as bad as most St John’s fans thought.

RJ averages 10.1 PTS, 4.7 rebounds, .9 assists/gm and shoots 40% overall & 20% on threes

Seems relatively ok for a Soph, but assuming next year he kills it seems risky. Re his shin splints, I know Ledlum coming off two knee surgeries and banged up a lot this year always laces them up & fully practices. That dedication & work ethic is what I want to see before slotting RJ in lottery 😇

He averaged 18 for Monmouth before he came to St. John's. I don't think he played collegiately after he left us, did play some in G League and then for years overseas.

Didn’t he go MIA and Jarvis got pissed? I think I remember seeing it in the documentary.

I think you're right. His college stats show 1 year at Monmouth and 2 at St. John's but last year only shows him playing 20 games.

Been a critic, but really great job by RJ last night. Hopefully he sustains solid play and, if he stays, aggressively attacks the off season regimen staff will develop for him. Obviously he could be a good piece. We’ll see how things shake out w him including NIL/free agency soon enough.

Anyone who thinks RJ needs to go I my opinion needs to look closer. Yes sometimes he is out of control ! That will end with Ricks coaching and you saw some of that last night. Watch him play one on one defense --he stopped Posh several times from turning the corner. He rebounds and hustles all the time . His raw talent if off the books .

It's obviously so much easier to say nice things off a good performance and a win, and also trash a kidoff a bad performance and loss.

Having said that every kid on the roster bar none, has been trashed mercilessly when they strung together as few as 2 bad. The same kids get over the top praise off even a single good game.

Truth is Luis in transition on the break can do amazing things. It's always a mixed bag at this point but at his best is a superior talent. At this point in his development we've seen lots of erratic play but also some amazing stuff.

Eons ago, Mets gave up on Nolan Ryan, who walked way too many guys, had issues with blisters on his fingers, etc. They figured he'd never get there so the filled a 3rd base hole with a former all star ss who was washed up at 30.

Low risk very high reward potential with Luis. Keeper without question and will earn minutes by playing under control. Playing injury free may also help immensely. Could easily have been shut down and red shirt. Glad he is here.

Maybe he will lay an egg against Depaul and Georgetown, but last night showed us what he can offer us as he gets more comfortable, smarter with the ball, and more under control defensively.

Unlike the NBA, none of these NIL contracts are transparent. It's sort of impossible to do the cost-benefit analysis on this. But I trust CRP and the staff to make the right call.
