RJ Luis

A small part of one game but RJ looked very similar to last year. A very talented athlete who needs to stop the ball movement and work on his one on moves while his four teammates stop and look.
Wilsher played the complete opposite. Upon receiving the pass he looked to make a move toward the basket or take an uncontested shot but if neither is there he moved the ball. If RJ continues his type of play Pitino with a deeper team this year than last will have him glued to the bench.
His jump shot looks much better than last year IMO. I'm no jump-shooting expert, but just visually it seems like herky/jerky and smoother.

I can't think of any other player in recent years that so much has been talked about a players "potential"

Don't get me wrong, I think Luis is good and hope he has great year and makes the adjustments and improvements but at same time I'm not ready to say this guy is NBA draft bound.

Hardytime posted how good RJ looked taking those early three pointers. He got the pass, saw he had a clear view of the basket and took the shot without any one on one moves resulting in a forced shot. Those two shots looked beautiful.

The mentally tough players don’t let adversity like a bad call, turnover or frustration w missed shots get to them. This seems to be a critical part of RJ’s maturation. He has the skills obviously, but in year three must become a more heady player imo. Yes, I know it is early and he certainly can do this to reach a more consistent and effective level of play.

Kid has had a high FG % last season and so far this season so as far as I'm concerned I don't mind his occasional taking his man one on one which seems to be a problem for some posters, now if he was shooting at a lower % I could see the concern.

My only thing with RJ is making quicker decisions. I also don't mind him going 1x1 in these games since its a really clear mismatch, and his shot has very visibly improved. I do think it hurts the rhythm of the offense if he's holding onto the ball for 5-7 seconds before deciding what to do.

What about him going 1 on 2 and 1 on 3? And I love him, but.....

When he plays with a slow pace, it gives the defense time to double team him or get in position to defend him in the paint. The quicker he is with the ball, I think some of that will be lessened.

Mind? I look forward to it. But he is really dangerous in the open court in transition. Trying to drive into a zone often ends badly though with RJ having nowhere to go. With a very good supporting cast who all can score there will be less of that this season.

He did find an open shooter for a wide open trey (which we made) after drawing and dishing. I wanna see more of that from him and not forcing the issue. I like him as he has some dawg in him and a nose for the ball. I just want him to play a bit wiser and better choose his spots.

I think our fan base has been so beaten down by the last 20 years, that they're willing to accept a talented kid who doesn't play within the framework of the team at times. Last year's UCONN team was one of the smartest and most well coached teams I've ever seen. I do not ever once recall seeing them play recklessly. Does anyone think that Luis would have sniffed significant minutes on a team like that with the way he's played?

We will not win with Luis on the court unless he plays, as you say, a bit wiser and picks his spots better. Yeah we'll win games when he's hot, but he won't ever be able to be trusted in close games against better comp. If we're hoping to have a really successful year with Luis playing significant minutes, he needs to totally buy in IMO.

As Captain of the RJ 1st team BE train… I’ll admit, there are times within the game- that it seems he forgets he has 4 teammates on the court… BUT…BUt…. I think we need him to play like that.

It’s not every possession he puts his head down and stiff arms to the goal line… it’s some… and with 5 secs on the clock, I trust the ball in his hands to either get a shot off or get fouled more than others right now.

2 possessions stood out like that vs Q… 1 where he threw up a wild shot - and1…. 2 where I didn’t know what he was aiming for- but got HIS OwN Miss- and put back.

The kid plays with such energy and is everywhere on the court that he will get the benefit of the doubt for those plays throughout the game

We are going to be very good and RJ, Devon, Kadary, Simeon, Brady and Aaron are going to lead us there. We will be top 20 just because those guys will be so good.
