Zags reporting MA Will Be Brought Back. Please boycott the games and donations

- Cragg is a Duke guy.
- Brey was an Assistant at Duke for 8 seasons.
- Rumors that Brey was open to discussing the SJU opening last time around before the search became a clown show.
- Brey announces his run at ND is over after this season, most people took it to mean he's retiring.
- SJU pretty much decides CMA will not return after this season.
- Coach K attends the SJU/Prov game, likely meets with Cragg and probably Shanley too. Possibly casually and informally talk about the upcoming opening.
- A few days later Brey makes it clear he's not retiring and wants to continue coaching.

Wouldn't be surprised is all...

Honestly I can see it. He knows he’s going to need a big budget and big wallets for NIL. That’s how you compete to make a final 4 now and for Rick I’m sure that what he wants. He’s got one more stop…he’s going for gusto. Could that happen here? Yes but we know we some help with the infrastructure. The big football schools have the infrastructure set up already and then some.

Again…I think he could do great at SJU or Gtown and I’m sure the support would be there financially but we are not a big football state school at the end of the day.

Let me look in to my SJU crystal ball for a moment, and see what's going to happen when the season is over;
1. CMA is let go(assuming we don't make a run in the Big East tournament)
2. After another bungled search, SJU goes out and makes another safe but uninspiring coaching hire
3. SJU touts him/her/them/it(just trying to stay PC) as a "Grand Slam Hire"
4. A massive fundraising push gets underway. Terms like "state-of-the-art facilities" and "a new era of St. John's basketball"are thrown around loosely.
5. Ticket prices are raised 30%
6. Our fan base gets giddy with excitement and runs out throws money at the school via donations and season ticket purchases. In other words, they drink the Kool Aid by the gallons.
7. The administration gets exactly what they want, and buys themselves another 5 +/- years of mediocre basketball with minimal headaches.

I'm going to save this post not only because, IMO, it's one of my finest, but also because I'm certain that I'm going to need to repost it again in 5 years when the cycle repeats itself. That is, if I make it that long.

Not sure what the attraction to Brey is. His best success was a decade ago. To me he’s a similar hire to Anderson. Older coach, probably doesn’t have the energy we need. Defense is optional. He probably runs some good offense though. I would pass.
Agreed. I like Brey, a good coach who is underrated. Not easy to recruit at ND as they rarely gave him any break on academics. But at this point he seems to have lost his fastball and at his age not sure if/when he would get it back.

That’s freaking real interesting and Cragg and K definitely met that part was coordinated

The timing of the Brey "clarification" is interesting. Most people, including the national reporters, assumed he was retiring when he and ND announced this was going to be his last season there. He had the chance to clarify that right away but didn't. Now, about a month later he has.

Is he just trying to let ADs who have a search coming up know that he's an option? Does he have a specific job in mind? Would he be interested in going down a level should a school like St. Joe's open up? Brey isn't going to be an SEC, B12, or P12 type of guy and can't see any ACC or B10 school offering him a job at this point.

I think Georgetown fits here as well as I mentioned a while ago Brey could be a fit there because he's a DC guy and Georgetown is similar to ND in terms of academics.

Maybe it's much ado about nothing and it's just my naturally conspiratorial brain going too far.

We are fairly closely aligned. Considering where this looks like its going I don't see number six happening, even though number four will occur. I see no evidence that the Anderson hire helped with raising money, no matter how much they spun him on day one. After four more bad years I don't know why a Matt Langel hire is going to energize anyone in New York. As one example.

Which is why number seven seems so certain, as more than ever winning is now all about money. The school will continue to pocket what they get from being in the Big East and not have/use any meaningful money on the program.

Which is why I'm fairly ambivalent about what seems to be an impending change anyway. It's hard to envision success from it.

Happy to be wrong - I'm sure you would be as well.

If the Brey stuff ends up being true we might as well just make Coach K our AD since Cragg just does what he says. If I'm Cragg I'd listen to nice and then not even consider it for a second considering we are where we are because of coach Ks recommendation.

I've done some f'ed up crap in last 6 months, and I ain't all that much younger then Rick lol

I think you're correct. And it would be so sad if he went to Georgetown because SJU wouldn't take him.
Georgetown is far more prestigious, much better facilities, far deeper pockets than SJU. Pitino's kids went to school there. If he wants a state school, that's a different matter.
Nothing we can do except stop caring.

I know this is not a sexy hire by any means but I feel like anyone who can make Fordham a 20 win team before we are even halfway through February deserves a look
He has done a nice job but they have a senior loaded team with a few guys who are in their 5th year…experienced can neutrAlize talent gaps…rooting for them but expect that they will come back to earth next year.

Lets take a look at something very concerning, Cragg's first hired coach (CMA) was recommended by Capel. Now we will possibly hire Brey because coach k says so? wtfffffffffffffff? Why do we have him as our AD? I mean others gotta recommend who to hire? That's crazy.

For me, main attraction is that his teams hit threes and he has connections in fertile areas. Is that enough to get us to Big Dance three out of the six seasons he'd be here? As a fifth or sixth choice, he would be a great hire. As a first or second choice, it would seem like school didn't want to be bothered with a legitimate search.
