yukon game

Obekpa is a magnet for fouls.

He is for sure - but so much of it is his style of play - I mean the kid honestly flies in on every shot thinking he can block the basket.

I wonder what transgression D'Lo committed to be benched for so long in the second half?

Obviously Marco adds another dimension but when we have the ball I would like to see him move a bit and try to get more open. He picks his spot just outside the arc and kind of waits and hopes. They figured him out in the second half and he did not get a look. Made two crucial FTs though...

Seven games left. 3 and 4 is realistic but hoping for 4 and 3. Ten or even eleven wins in the BE would be an accomplishment. Win a game or two in the BE Tourney and who knows?

It was after D'Lo made a lackadaisical effort in a hand off that was stolen as he crossed halfcourt. Actually, this was not the only time we lost the ball trying to handoff , allowing a Uconn player to split the weave. Obviously ,we have to work on this.

Nice win! One thing I notice about Green, as he has been a 2 most of his life, when he dribbles he spends a lot of time looking at his defender. He is used to using the dribble to create for himself, not looking for his teammates. Until last yr he has never had to dribble to create for others. Amir gets lazy at times. When Pointer messed up the hand off, he sprinted back, when Amir did he barely made an effort to get back. Unfortunetly with baseball taking up his summers, this is the best we will see him. On to Cuse, unless the snowstorm doesn't allow the Red Storm to continue big game hunting

I think UConn fans really are starting to jump ship. The scandal with no postseason play, plus Calhoun retiring, plus being left out of the C-7. It wasn't very long ago UConn was on par with the Duke's and UNC's of the CBB world. Weird to see them fall so fast. They are still a very good team IMO and if they shoot the way they did most of the 2nd half all game they will beat anyone.

UCONN wasn't "left out" of the C-7, but the exodus of the C-7 schools made it clear how lost they are without an invite froma major conference that also has football.

I was there last night and my take on things.

- Despite having blown a 15 point lead with 16 minutes to play, I was proud of our guys in sticking with it and hanging on to the lead.
- The Pukon fans were pretty quiet, until Pukon started coming back, and that was expected. But I was proud of our fans. At one point the jerks started their U-C-O-N-N chant, but our fans drowned them out with "Let's Go Johnnies!" And I was contributing to that. I also liked the "UCONN Sucks!" chants. I know; not very Christian-like, but still worth it! The Pukon fans were also pretty quiet on my MetroNorth train ride home. And of course, I was in my St. John's gear, so they knew who was in the house! :)
- Marco can score; the good news. He cannot play defense; the bad news. I think every PUKON player he was guarding was able to easily get around him. But I'll take his offense and his ability to electrify the crowd with his shooting. My wife became a big fan of his last night; calling him "Frenchy." I better watch her; she may have some "cougar tendencies!"
- Jakaar made some rookie mistakes last night with his fouls. Can't get on him too much. He is only getting better; but he needs to realize we need him in the game.
- Where oh where did we learn how to shoot free throws?! That was the difference last night. At the beginning of the game, I jokingly said to the guy sitting next to me, "The way to beat us is to send us to the foul line." That was NOT the case last night. Good for our guys!
- Finally, I hope that was the last we'll ever see of Pukon, and their obnoxious fans, at the Garden. Good riddance. Hope they end up in the MAAC or the Northeastern Conference!

GO ST. JOHN'S!!

I don't know. The fact that they weren't invited by the C-7 to join them makes me think that in fact, they were intentionally left out.

fun game...

btw - how frustrating was it that we turned the ball over on around three separate occasions when one SJU player was simply handing the ball to another SJU player just over the half-court line? The Yukon defender would just pressure the hand-off, poking the ball away and grab it for a break-away. That was very frustrating to watch for a 2nd and 3rd time during the game.

Extremely fustrating to me.

Actually, that one wasn't an hand off but a pass the through behind Marco as Marco was flashing towards him to receive the ball. Lavin is quoted in Newsday basically saying he sat DLo for so long because sometimes a struggling player needs to take a step back and watch whats going on in order to get his focues back.

Good point about the FT's. Everyone harps on us when we suck there but last night we were on. Two way street so the praise should be given.

Good I`m glad they stayed home. Anytime beating them is a great night, wheather they attend or not.
I`d say tonight was the most important game in 2 years and the most important win with Lavins kids.

I`m not expecting wins at Suracuse or at Louisville, but stealing one and then beating USF then 2-2 during the last 4 would put us at 11-7, I`d say that definitely gets us in.

But damn going to Syracuse and Louisville and winning both would be absolutely freaking insane, hey I could dream right?

Ummm, that's not dreaming. That's the drugs kicking in ;)

UConn plays D1 FBS football. The so-called C-7 is not going to add such a program only to see it bolt as soon as it gets what it perceives as a better offer from another conference. They are still in a conference with Cincy, UCF, Houston, SMU and whomever.

Nova plays FCS football and would be hard pressed at this time to make a jump to FBS.

IMO, Lavin made some big mistakes in this game. They only came back because they were beating our zone and hitting shots. We should have played Harrison sooner and should have played man-d the entire second half when they figured out the zones. We didn't need a 2-3 vs this team. We have needed it against other teams, but not this one. Should have been man the entire second half and they wouldn't have made it close to coming back IMO. I thought this was not Lavin's best game. We did execute well the first half on defense. We need to start putting together more complete second halves.

That said, love to beat those obnoxious uconn fans. We greatly outnumbered them, but we could still have used about 3k more SJU fans there. Hopefully continued success and the press that big wins like this draw, will help draw some buzz. Go Redmen!

Maybe a 3 for 1 special will get our fans to show up.

We need a zone with Marco in the game, his lack of foot speed would be exploited enourmously if we were in man-to-man. I thought his presence in the game, even in the second half when he couldnt get his shot off, led to a much more open middle on their defense. All in all I think he was a big contributor to the win last night.

I think the footspeed thing is overrated. He's not slower than Dee for example. And the whole team leaves too many holes in the zone still. You can put his feet in cement it won't be any different than the rest in how they play it.

LOVEEEEE watching all the PUKON fans file towards the exits!!!!

Thought Lavin could have used his timeouts a little better....shouldnt have 1 time out left in the game with 1148 to go, when we were winning the whole game!!!! could have used a couple time outs when losing the ball down the stretch

with that said great win....lets go shock the ORange!

BTW, say a prayer for Lavin's Dad. It sounds like his father is having some health problems and Coach flew out to California after the Hoya game to be with him.

After the Hoya game or last night's game?

Yes his father has been ill. Thoughts are with Lav and the family.

I think Phil Green needs some bench time, yesterday he played as tho Marco was showing him up and he needed to prove himself and out duel him.

Continually making bad shots and praying they go in. I do not like him running the point, i do not like his shots and i don't like his playing style very selfish at times, i feel like Marco should start over him consistently now that we see how well he can shoot.

Phil- 2 for 11 and 0-4 3pt.
Marco- 3 for 7 and 3-3 3pt.

Did not know that. Will certainly keep him and his Dad in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm going to completely disagree about the zone.

1. Calhoun is not a consistent 3 point shooter. Zone them and let him continue to shoot. Law of averages says he would miss a few and he did.

2. Our perimeter defense sucks. Napier and Boatright would simply penetrate past Phil and get into the lane.

While I commend Lavin for sticking to the zone, I have to get on him about his timeout usage and rotation. Blowing timeouts just to talk to the team in the first half is just a waste. If you're going to draw up a play (which I've only seen him do in one game this season), then fine. But he needs to stop doing this because some of those 2nd half turnovers couldve been avoided if he had extra timeouts to spare.

And his player rotations were just flat out stupid. Leaving both Obekpa and Jakarr out there with 4 fouls when Christian Jones actually gave you a Totally different element this game was just dumb. I can understand if Jones flubbed rebounds or air balled FTs, but he didn't. We were fortunate Jakarr didn't foul out.

And sending a message to D'Lo by sitting him because of his turnover. Bench him, scold him, fine. But don't hurt the team by leaving him off the floor for so long. Those kinds of tactics rarely work. Yes D'Lo was lackadaisical I think he got the point. No need to drive it home for so long.
