yukon game

Nice win! One thing I notice about Green, as he has been a 2 most of his life, when he dribbles he spends a lot of time looking at his defender. He is used to using the dribble to create for himself, not looking for his teammates. Until last yr he has never had to dribble to create for others. ...

Well put. It's obvious that he lacks the instincts of a point guard (which, to my knowledge, he's never claimed to be). Just goes to show that, with rare exceptions, PGs are born and not made.

IMO, Lavin made some big mistakes in this game. They only came back because they were beating our zone and hitting shots. We should have played Harrison sooner and should have played man-d the entire second half when they figured out the zones. We didn't need a 2-3 vs this team. We have needed it against other teams, but not this one. Should have been man the entire second half and they wouldn't have made it close to coming back IMO. I thought this was not Lavin's best game. We did execute well the first half on defense. We need to start putting together more complete second halves.

That said, love to beat those obnoxious uconn fans. We greatly outnumbered them, but we could still have used about 3k more SJU fans there. Hopefully continued success and the press that big wins like this draw, will help draw some buzz. Go Redmen!

I'm going to completely disagree about the zone.

1. Calhoun is not a consistent 3 point shooter. Zone them and let him continue to shoot. Law of averages says he would miss a few and he did.

2. Our perimeter defense sucks. Napier and Boatright would simply penetrate past Phil and get into the lane.

While I commend Lavin for sticking to the zone, I have to get on him about his timeout usage and rotation. Blowing timeouts just to talk to the team in the first half is just a waste. If you're going to draw up a play (which I've only seen him do in one game this season), then fine. But he needs to stop doing this because some of those 2nd half turnovers couldve been avoided if he had extra timeouts to spare.

And his player rotations were just flat out stupid. Leaving both Obekpa and Jakarr out there with 4 fouls when Christian Jones actually gave you a Totally different element this game was just dumb. I can understand if Jones flubbed rebounds or air balled FTs, but he didn't. We were fortunate Jakarr didn't foul out.

And sending a message to D'Lo by sitting him because of his turnover. Bench him, scold him, fine. But don't hurt the team by leaving him off the floor for so long. Those kinds of tactics rarely work. Yes D'Lo was lackadaisical I think he got the point. No need to drive it home for so long.

I agree with you on using toomany first half timeouts.

I disagree with you on the rotation. The game was slipping away, and Sampson was needed. Lavin trusted Sampson would be able to score on offense, and play just enough off hi s man to avoid a 5th foul. It worked. Same with Obekpa. He made two free throws and a hit foul line jumper on consecutive offensive possesions.

While Harrison's benching was lengthy, it worked too. He came out blazing. He hit his FT's, made a gutsy deep 3, and hit another tough jumper. Maybe he knew exactly how long to sit Harrison before putting him back in. Maybe Lavin knows where Harrison's head is with just a 10 second talk with him.

Sometimes a coach needs to roll the dice and play a hunch. And Lavin for better or worse, makes a lot of decisions based on his gut. He knows his players and he trusts his players.

did anyone notice the Uconn coach doing his Jarvis imitation while uconn was falling apart around the 2-3 minute mark? his chin was in his hand with his index finger pointed up looking like a deer in headlights while his team was choking down the stretch.

They're not that good. Doesn't mean they're awful. I would expect a very competitive game if the STJ guards can keep Boatwright, Napier and Calhoun somewhat contained and make them work hard on D. UConn has struggled with USF and Providence the last two games. They can be had, though Marillac's by 20 is a bit or a reach. SHould be a pretty good game. Branch playing or not may be the difference.

If Branch does play I think the starting lineup is Jakkar, Greene, Marco, D'lo, and Sir' Dom. Marco looked better last game. I want to have Lavin start him to keep his confidence up.

No way Marco starts, I don't think he can keep up with their guards on the defensive end. I think Amir starts with Dom paired up with Calhoun, but I think Marco gets some court time.

It would give him some confidence and that is something a shooter needs and he could be a great third scorer even if it is off the bench but, I would give him the start try to keep his hot hand going. But you are probably right about Amir getting the Start.

By your analogy Harrison should not start since his first shot against the Hoyas was chucking a prayer from 30 feet and forgetting he had 4 other teammates.

Come on Harrison has proved himself you don't bench a play that can go for 20+ points any night. Marco on the other hand has been pushed to the end of the bench. He earned to move up in rotation even if he doesn't start. He needs to see coach trust him and has faith in him. If you don't want another three point threat that's you, but if we become more constant from the three point line it will help our ability to drive, slash, and get some backdoor cuts.

I thought that was a great shot by Harrison. Anytime that kid can get an open look, it's a great shot.

He is shooting about 40% from the field in the very low 30's on 3's; a direct correlation to his insistence on taking bad shots. You guys seriously overrate this kid. He is a fine player, and certainly can be clutch but he is no franchise, even in college.

Maybe a 3 for 1 special will get our fans to show up.

I think the attendance thing is overrateds far as the care factor and fan support - as we realie, this is the big city with so many things/stuff/distractions/commitments/kids, bills etc.

I follow SJU regularly but only attend one MSG game and one Queens game.
There are different ways to participate and support the program = my point.

great game - can't stand UConn - I'm glad Calhoun was in the expensive seats to suck it all up - one minutes of UConn glory when the took that brief lead

all the best

They had their run under Jimmy Dewars its over haha Ollie who?

Love hearing those huskie fans fans cheering for they finally took a lead w 10mins to play thinking they were gonna win
nice long ride back to storrs in the middle of the woods lol

great post DieHard or at least a very nice one - Dewars = the scotch/whiskey beverage???

This was my first UCONN/SJU game at the Garden, and know I know why you all love Pukon fans so much. Great win to keep our composure. Wish there were more fans and it was a little louder but I will take it. The area I was sitting in had some really loud, fun fans, who were really ripping on the UCONN fans. I can only hope the one guy who kept making great jokes at the UCONN fans is a redmen.comer, or else we need him to be one.

Thanks Upstate - I told this before - lived inthe lovely Avon CT for a decade and remember sitting with UConn fans/friends when SJU lead the entire way until UConn tied the game and OT began.
I was so frustrated that I said I had to leave to get some sleep.
Little did I know Felipe and Zendon and company would win - and I believe it was on the UConn campus.

they and VIllanova are my favorite teamas to beat.

If all fans chose to attend 2 games a year we'd be in much better shape. Problem is even with all the sweetheart deals they still don't.

Sorry General I have to disagree on the attendance part of your post. I am not sure if it was on the broadcast last night or earlier in this thread but someone mentioned that Harrison came out looked in the stands and shook his head. These kids deserve, and want to see, more fannies in the seats. I do not believe it is overrated; however, as I stated previously this is a pro town and when the winning and program gets more consistent people will show up. But I believe it is important to these kids and future recruits to see a full CA and Garden.

This team is a reflection of their head coach.

They look like they don't know what they are doing half the time. Sometimes, it looks like they didn't learn from history, and thus, are doomed to repeat it. There are streches of games where we look like we don't even belong in the gym, much less in the Big East.

BUT:

We know what we do well, and generally stick with it. We play our butts off, getting every little bit we can out of everyone (most nights). We're a better team in Febuary then we were in December (which, going through Lavin's career, seems like a constant with his teams).

However, where we most emulate Lavin (and this is something that I do think was missing last year), is this: We may have our bad stretches in games, and it looks like we may never get a hoop, or a stop, again. But, these guys certianly don't get down on themselves. They always think they are going to win, right up until that final buzzer, and no one is going to tell them otherwise. Yes we've blown leads in Big East play, but we've almost always found a way in the end. This team is striking a nice balance in having confidence in themselves, while also realizing the amount of effort that must be put forth, both in practice and games, to be successful.

Beating Cuse is a stretch but I think if Branch is back for L'Ville, we could take them. Overrated team in my opinion

I'm thinking the opposite. We have a better chance against the weakened Orange than Louisville. Louisville beats us by 14 minimum. As you can tell, I'm not optimistic there. I think we can take Syracuse!

I agree, Syracuse is down with available players and do not look good lately. Stop Triche and Grant is the key.
Any win at the Dome is an upset. I would love to see it.

UConn has a GPS device in the ball from 3. We cannot stop them. They have to be shooting like 70% from the field this half.

i would really hate sitting next to you at a game.

Because reading his posts is so much better?

Besides no need to worry he doesn't go to games. ;) (Yes I know you went last week . . . and found another thing to whine about, good for you)

Too bad this isn't a year where the win can't be used as a tie-breaker for NCAA consideration between the two schools.

It will certainly help SJU's standings as a tie-breaker against others. We need UConn to win as many as possible the rest of the way.

Well they'll end up with a very good conference record so that will help. Their double headers are against DePaul, USF and Providence plus Cincy. How did they manage that or was it because they're post season ineligible the conference didn't want them mucking up anyone else's chances. But they're now 1-6 against the RPI top 55 if you throw out that game in Germany. I wouldn't count on many quality wins from that group for the rest of the season.

Shooting %'s for guys that have to create their shots are always going to be skewed. He is the main focus of every single defense we face. Anytime he gets his feet set and an open look, it's a good shot. The only problem I have with him is when launches wild shots after dribbling too much.

He takes bad shots period. He is a good player who hopefully will mature and learn to let the game come to him. Right now, he takes bad shots, bad shots are bad shots whether you create them yourself or not. And almost all players are better shooters if they have an open look and can get their feet set. Kind of like saying most hitters are better if they get ahead in the count or are hitting with the infield in.

You can blame Moanasch again for weak attendance the tickets r too expensive $75 to sit in 100's it should be $50
all the upper deck seats should be given free to ny catholic school kids to to promote the vincentians school fill the empty seats duh
I brought 4 seats in sect 115 & 2 friends said no to going soo the Johnnys r not a hot ticket yet

Free?

This is MSG, not CA. You're asking for all types of trouble (logistics, security, etc) filling free seats for kids at the Garden.

Bottom line is there should be more sales promos/discounts for tickets. Especially for students and alumni.
