Wisconsin game

Sanchez and Harrison getting into quick foul trouble set the tone.
I'm optimistic about the season, seeing as Wisconsin is a real good team that shot lights out last night.
Sanchez played 18 minutes last night, Jordan 24

Play them both 36 (the minutes Sampson and Harrison got) and we're in the game.
Don't want to see PG IV ever get 18 minutes again.
Dom played 26, that needs to increase.
Gift and Hooper I just don't see in the rotation.
Once they get the transition game going, they'll be fine.

guarding the 3 has not been out strong suit.

neither is guarding the 2.

Actually, that is not at all true. We were ranked #51 in fg% defense in the country last year and #1 in blocked shots. For reference, National Champ Louisville was around #40 in FG% defense last year. Statistically, we were solid guarding the 2.

Just another example of stats not telling the real story.. Many opponents made so many 3's that they didn't need to take the 2's. I think consensus among the knowing was we were not good defensively. Or, rebounding.. Or, free throw shooting.. or, our own 3 pt shooting. Yes, we did block shots but, that is a deceiving stat that often doesn't influence the games outcome. It's like dunking..Still only 2 points.despite the oohs and ahhs.

Frankly, we have a new season to see our improvement in these key areas.

I agree with your comments about stats not telling the whole story. We were so ugly on offense at times last year, it kind of lulls better opponents into poor shooting performances. I don't remember a lot of lockdowns when we needed it, but lots of breakdowns on defense. Block shots in basketball can be like Dave Kingman homeruns - the strikeouts kill you when you are swinging for the fences too much. Blocked shots don't tell the story about roaming on defense, and leaving your man wide open for an easy layup or put back when you are out of position.

What you are trying to convince people of is not the statistical truth. The whole story is that we were #51 in FG % defense, which statistically translates into the truth being that we defended inside the arc more than a large swathe of high major schools, ncluding most of the former Big East including some tourney teams. Just because you don't remember something doesn't change the facts and make it partial truth. Your "truth" is more akin to beer goggles, where your memory of those girls tells a much different tale, regardless of the facts.

So it's fresh in both our minds, your claims of a superior interior defense was exposed last night. Our overall defense is, and was, poor.

This game was extremely frustrating to watch! We started off flat, Harrison didn't try to assert himself, and the foul calls were extremely one sided in the first half. Once Orlando picked up his second Wisconsin went on a huge run. The way the game was being called hindered any chance of us doing any full court press, which based on what I saw From St. Louis last year, we will run quite a bit of. I know we all wanted a big win early, I hate losing, especially when we have the deepest team we have had since the Postell, Thornton era. The Positives: 1)Sampson is a beast, he needs to not shoot 3's lol but he showed improved ball handling. You give him any space and he will glide by you and dunk on you! 2) Orlando Sanchez can ball, he ran the floor beautifully, can pass, hit a Three pointer! We need him on the floor at all times. 3) Rysheed is the truth, he didn't have a good game and I still came away impressed by his abilities. He was the only guy that could stop dribble penetration yesterday. Beautiful lob pass to Jakaar who dunked it with ferocity. Has great poise and will only get better! 4) we are a very deep team! It's one game, Wisconsin executed better than we did. We shouldn't hang our heads on this result. I have full confidence that we will make a lot of noise during conference play! Also D-lo handled himself well during the game, he didn't shoot well from 3 but didn't lose his cool with some highly questionable offensive foul calls on him.

Sorry to be Captain Obvious here but we gave up way to many WIDE Open 3 point looks. Since we can't shoot 3 pointers ourselves it is difficult to win when they get 3 and we get 2. We will win a good number of games since we do have depth and talent. However, we will struggle mightily against disciplined teams who can hit 3's because our defense is over aggressive and tends to chase leaving good shooters all alone. This has been a theme for a couple of years.

I know the IQ comment was from Moose but Lavin has not impressed me as a coach. Recruiteer, handling of the media, as a person, impressive. As a coach, not so much.....

Unfortunately, you need to dig in on D and rebound to "get the transition game going"; when they dedicate themselves to those, we'll be fine. Offense doesn't win, that's for the ESPN dunderheads, defense and rebounding win.

That post was in response to one by Jack of Virginia

I think they played poorly and was not impressed. With all the firepower we allegedly have, there should have been a better game plan. But the one thing that disturbed me the most was when I saw the Wisconsin player Brust push the ref with two hands and not get penalized or thrown from the game. This came after he tried to dunk a shot shortly after a foul was called in the second half and Sanchez went up to stop him. They both fell to the floor and Brust got up ready to "attack" Sanchez but was stopped by his own teammates. He then got into an altercation with a ref and pushed the ref with two hands. It was seen on tv but the commentators made no comment of it. Brust should have been tossed from the game, that was outrageous what he did. Right then and there I knew we could never win the game. Were these Big Ten refs??

I wish we would stop all this stuff about Lavin. Personally, I'm not sold that he is in love with SJU, but that's an aside. He didn't come here as a great game coach, and left money on the table to assemble a top notch staff to presumably augment his deficiencies. He's recruited very well, and any of our brilliant suggestions, even the ones that are dead on, are not a revelation to his staff. It's way too early with way too talented a roster, to excoriate him for a team with many new parts not playing well together YET.

Correct about Kingman striking out too much.
Correct that blocks are often times more hype than they are productive. (sometimes)
But how the hell does our team shooting bricks "lull the opponent into missing shots"? So, because we couldn't hit a jumper for 4mins, all of a sudden other teams were going to miss shots? That's not how it works.

Here's how it works: Wisconsin moved comfortably ahead early and stayed there. When it appeared we were going to make it a game via an inspired run, Wisconsin upped their game, and moved back ahead with 5 or 6 consecutive great possessions. If you think our second half defense caused us to move back into the game, it was more to do with complacency on Wisconsin's part. They got the job done early and late, when it is important to exert superiority, because it's less usual for a team to dominate end to end. If you want to call last night evidence of good interior defense but failed perimeter coverage, have fun.

Agreed. Our shear athleticism will allow us to have some nice runs(as we did yesterday) and keep the score close in many games. We likely will even win a game or two against superior opponents. But unless we can come up with some sort of offensive and defensive cohesiveness we are going to struggle against most teams. One game does not a season make, but this team came out of the gate looking very lost. I know we were all expecting so much more.

I saw that same thing. They cut away from Brust to the ref it very quickly. The ref looked at Brust as if to say "don't push your luck kid". No mention was made of it by the announcers, likely to protect the kid. The NCAA should definitely look at the video. Anyhow I thought the refs did an admiral job. That's not why we lost.

Very disappointing loss. Conventional wisdom says this team will be much better come January, but I'm tired of waiting. This team played with no identity tonight. Harrison played too timid and unselfish the whole first half. He needs to be involved early every game. I think not starting Dom was moronic and allowed Wisconsin to set the tone for the entire game.

Wisconsin is a Sweet 16 team this year for sure IMO. Jordan is legit....holy sh*t did he have some flashes if true brilliance. Who was saying this kid isn't a pg?

Gasser is a great player and an inspiring competitor. Jackson is much improved. Jackson-Brust-Gasser-Dekker have some onions. Tough kids.

I don't often criticize Lavin but he got taken to the woodshed by Ryan.
Biggest takeaway is when are we going to press? Why assemble this type of roster to run half court sets? This is maddening.

I agree I posted as soon as the line up was announced that Dom should be starting instead of Branch. Makes no sense not to press, esp in the first half when Wisc was getting whatever they wanted.

Brust "went after" Sanchez like a guy who wanted no part of him. He quickly shoved his own teammates aside, but once in the clear, made sure not to get in Sanchez' face, instead seeking out a ref to plead his case. Honestly, I thought that his "shove" of a ref was to demonstrate to the ref what was being done to him on defense, and not as an altercation. By the book, the ref could have tossed him, but instead, rightly IMO, raised his eyebrows, and warned him about touching a ref, which Brust immediately responded to. Clean play by Sanchez, and precipitated by Brust playing through the whistle. I think someone else pointed out that they were Big East refs.

To all those still on the ledge, Wisconsin is a nasty, nasty team. I would not be shocked to see them in the Elite Eight if they can stay healthy. Very tough matchup for our first game...essentially on the road.

I also thought the shove was demonstrative. To me, he clearly got up to seek out a ref.

If they aren't, we sure made them look that way.

Is Florida next up for Wisconsin or a couple of games away, after that game I'll rate the badgers. It a little early for picking NCCA standings

also I thought that court was hideous for tv. almost the same color as the basketball

Disagree. once you put your hand on a ref you should be gone. But the calls against us all night were pitty patty fouls But no excuses if you are better you should win If we have a bad season like 16 wins and do make the dance Lavins job should be questionable After several yrs team should be at least playing good basic offense and defense If you have talent you must be able to bring it together Pitino
has it developes it and put it on the court yr in and yr out
Maybe it is just disappointment Hoping for better as we go forward

If you watched further Brust had his arm around the ref and cooler heads prevailed. Ref handled a heated moment beautifully
I thought the refs did a very fair job and do not consider the officiating to be any cause of the loss.
