Wisconsin game

Again I know its only one game, but are who is going to get the bulk of the minutes at the PG spot? Branch isn't the answer and Jordan looks to be more of a 2.[/quote/

By elimination that leaves Greene and that not about to happen>

Lavin did not seem to be upset with the outcome. He was very cordial at the end with Bo Ryan. Besides he said the team will come together somewhere around February and I believe him. No one on this board knew about Gasser, who killed us and
was out all last year with a knee injury.Duie Dukan comes off the bench and shoots lights out. Bo Ryan has shown he is a superior coach to Izzo, Crean, Beilein and all of the Big Ten coaches. His winning percentage is .700 plus which in my book is incredible. Could be a good wake up call for the team.
Only time will tell.

Jordan definitely is a 1. It was his first game and he is just getting adjusted. His pass to Sampson for a dunk was beautiful.

I know he's supposed to be a 1, and it seems like he's a good passer, and I know its his first game so I've got to cut him some slack, but he didn't show me anything that would lead me to believe that he's the answer to our long standing pint guard problem.

The only thing enjoyable about the game was the crowd at legends. Thanks to nycredmAn for setting it up.

I will reserve judgement for a bit longer but there was a lot wrong tonight. They have a month to fix it.

Thanks Gman. It's too bad we couldn't pull this one out, we had the place going pretty good when we cut it to 4. Losing always sucks but I have to say that was most fun I've had in a long time, thanks to the Redmen.com crew. Got to see some familiar faces and met some new ones, all of them super cool SJU fans.

Our defense has a way of turning no name players in to superstars. Besides its not our job to know who Gasser is, it's the coaching staff's.

I've been conditioned to see the St. John's glass half empty, but the truth is I think we looked okay tonight, and if we can guard the 3 better we would've won. Even despite our bad start we were better or equal to Wisconsin in rebounds, turnovers, assists, fg% ...in almost every statistical way this was a close game, except Wisconsin shot 50% from 3 and we shot 15%. That was the game.

I will add though that the fact all our starters had 4+ fouls didn't help.

But truthfully I think we played a good second half and I see reason for optimism. This team is definitely better than the one we saw the last two seasons.

I am a little leery of the claim that we'll play our best ball in February. I've said that myself, and it was obviously true of the 2010 team, but is Georgetown going to be worse in February? is Wisconsin? No. They'll be better too.
So I question how much we can leap frog teams that wil be practicing and building chemistry just as much as we are.

I didn't expect to win this game and we didn't. When we clawed to within 4, Wisconsin upped their game, and ran about 6 consecutive flawless sequences. I'd rather lose to a team like this early than to whip a St. Francis and have false hopes because deficiencies weren't exposed. I'd still say that if we ran into them at tourney time, it may be a different story, but for tonight the better team won - but these early tough games pay dividends down the road.

Best Positives:
1) Sampson is developing into a beast. Wisconsin doesn't have a single player with his athleticism, nor do most teams.
2) Sanchez showed signs of everything he is touted to be.
3) Obekpa showed improvement on the offensive end around the hoop - this can be huge as the season develops.
4) Jordan is ready for D1 competition and will get better and better.
5) Harrison is focused and under control - this will be his best season.

Negatives:

1) Too many bad offensive sets with bad shots forced with a lot of time on the clock.
2) Defense overall was bad. A slower Wisconsin team proved the adage that the ball can move faster than the defense. Our guys kick it out as a last resort - Wisconsin drives and kicks to create spacing on the floor and wide open looks, which they made again and again.
3) Our interior defense is as bad as our coverage of the perimeter. Early on Wisconsin scored again and again inside on one-on-one isolations.

I like our team. There will be nights where our overall talent clicks and we beat anyone. Other nights a disciplined team will shred us. If this is a prototypical Lavin team, you can see how it might catch fire and run deep into the NCAA's or also make an early exit.

Very disappointing loss. Conventional wisdom says this team will be much better come January, but I'm tired of waiting. This team played with no identity tonight. Harrison played too timid and unselfish the whole first half. He needs to be involved early every game. I think not starting Dom was moronic and allowed Wisconsin to set the tone for the entire game.

Wisconsin is a Sweet 16 team this year for sure IMO. Jordan is legit....holy sh*t did he have some flashes if true brilliance. Who was saying this kid isn't a pg?

Gasser is a great player and an inspiring competitor. Jackson is much improved. Jackson-Brust-Gasser-Dekker have some onions. Tough kids.

I don't often criticize Lavin but he got taken to the woodshed by Ryan.
Biggest takeaway is when are we going to press? Why assemble this type of roster to run half court sets? This is maddening.

To state the obvious: Orlando can't pick up a quick foul to start the 2H.

D'Lo needs to get more shots.

Lavin needs to learn how to get him more shots. Is it possible that no one on this staff can set up an offense? And while you are at it a defense as well.

Very little good to take out of this game; no sense of team on either end of the court. We have all the athleticism in the world; we don't have much in the way of basketball players. Still insist on playing D with our hands and lose balnace at the simplest of fakes. Still have NO shooters to space the floor.

Find me a team with less collective basketball IQ. You'd be hard pressed.

Does that include Lavin?

I agree with all of this Beast. I would add that our offense was dreadful in the first half and that was where we lost the game (23 points does not get it done), as we just feel too far behind. While our defense was awful, Wisconsin's was also pretty bad at times. I didn't see an answer for Jakarr inside and I thought we should have just kept feeding him and Sanchez the ball until they stopped it. The late game press and trap showed some signs, and if Lav's first season is any indication, we'll use that more and more as the season wears on and the team gets better at it. Here's to hoping we get our focus this week in practice, fix these issues and get back on track on Friday.

Most game stats were pretty comparable (dead even in rebounding)

Key stat - 3 point shooting

St John's 2 - 13 (15.4%) = 6 points
Wisconsin 11 - 23 (47.8%) = 33 points

Differential = 27 points!!!

If it hasn't been said already, let me be the first to say that we look like a poorly coached team.

 What a surprise!
Agree, very disappointed in coaches game plan, his preparation against Wisc. Perhaps our players might be over-rated and are doing the best they can or he is not able to get the best out of them consistently.
Do not want to knock them hope something changes and they start living up to their potential. What is hard is that the same problem we had last yr is showing itself again being unable to D the 3 But we were not that far off from beating this team regardless 'Coach and staff has to do a better job if we are to go to the dance. Rasheed looked like a Freshmen Not a one and done player This could have been a signature win for us which would have gained us much respect Some how I am thinking coaches and teams are looking at us and saying same old same old
Wisc passed the ball quickly and accurately they were constantly cutting and uses the back door, hitting the open man and making shots Things we should have been doing. All I heard was that they are small up front they seemed just as big as us Grade player C coaches D

Correct about Kingman striking out too much.
Correct that blocks are often times more hype than they are productive. (sometimes)
But how the hell does our team shooting bricks "lull the opponent into missing shots"? So, because we couldn't hit a jumper for 4mins, all of a sudden other teams were going to miss shots? That's not how it works.

Here's how it works: Wisconsin moved comfortably ahead early and stayed there. When it appeared we were going to make it a game via an inspired run, Wisconsin upped their game, and moved back ahead with 5 or 6 consecutive great possessions. If you think our second half defense caused us to move back into the game, it was more to do with complacency on Wisconsin's part. They got the job done early and late, when it is important to exert superiority, because it's less usual for a team to dominate end to end. If you want to call last night evidence of good interior defense but failed perimeter coverage, have fun.
