Wisconsin game

Dont want to hear about moral victories This is the year...No excuses....Its been obvious for years that the first thing needed is defense...start with the 3 pt-line.....MAKE your free throws...Start Greene and Pointer over Jordan and Branch....Hope.Hooper wont join several other 3 pt hopes who can score agst lower tier teams, but not agst top twenty..

Sit Jordan? Thank goodness you are not coaching

Talking about the press and its use, isnt Lavin a student or follower of John Wooden? So where is the famous UCLA press? Gail Goodrich WHERE ARE YOU???

I think they played poorly and was not impressed. With all the firepower we allegedly have, there should have been a better game plan. But the one thing that disturbed me the most was when I saw the Wisconsin player Brust push the ref with two hands and not get penalized or thrown from the game. This came after he tried to dunk a shot shortly after a foul was called in the second half and Sanchez went up to stop him. They both fell to the floor and Brust got up ready to "attack" Sanchez but was stopped by his own teammates. He then got into an altercation with a ref and pushed the ref with two hands. It was seen on tv but the commentators made no comment of it. Brust should have been tossed from the game, that was outrageous what he did. Right then and there I knew we could never win the game. Were these Big Ten refs??

Brust "went after" Sanchez like a guy who wanted no part of him. He quickly shoved his own teammates aside, but once in the clear, made sure not to get in Sanchez' face, instead seeking out a ref to plead his case. Honestly, I thought that his "shove" of a ref was to demonstrate to the ref what was being done to him on defense, and not as an altercation. By the book, the ref could have tossed him, but instead, rightly IMO, raised his eyebrows, and warned him about touching a ref, which Brust immediately responded to. Clean play by Sanchez, and precipitated by Brust playing through the whistle. I think someone else pointed out that they were Big East refs.

If these were Big East refs they must be the new type of refs the new BE has because I never recall so many touch fouls. If this is what we are going to have, this will never be like the old BE with its aggressive tough play. We will now be the sissy BE

I understand what you are saying but you are aware that there are new rules for foul calls. I watched a bit of a few more games and it was about the same. If this is the way the whole season goes with regard to foul calls there's a few possibilities, one is that the game is unwatchable, another is coaches get their kids stop pressing so much on defense and scoring goes up, but the one thing that's for sure is, like the NFL, the offense is being favored over the defense.

To all those still on the ledge, Wisconsin is a nasty, nasty team. I would not be shocked to see them in the Elite Eight if they can stay healthy. Very tough matchup for our first game...essentially on the road.

Is Florida next up for Wisconsin or a couple of games away, after that game I'll rate the badgers. It a little early for picking NCCA standings

Agree, they'll be lucky to be in the top 20 in next week's polls of experts.

I have never seen Hooper play but if he can shoot he should get some minutes. As for D, if being a step slow on D was a criteria we would not be able to put 5 on the court.

I angrily watched a first half which can only be described as appealing. No energy, poor officiating, getting out-coached. Basically my take away from that first half is this: Wisconsin had kids on the perimeter who barely could dribble the ball. I mean some wretched ball handlers. For whatever reason we couldn't stay in front of them and thus we allowed them to shoot better from 3 PT territory than 2 PTers! Move the ball quickly, penetrate and kick back outside to a wide open whitey.

In the 2nd half I think the team showed their true potential. Clearly the game plan was RUN. First half we ran, but took some God-awful shots in half-transition situations or turned the ball over. Meanwhile the badgers were running 30 seconds off the clock all half. After the break we looked real solid IMO. Got to the stripe, got to the bucket in transition and ran that uptempo style wisely. The turning point came when we were closing to within 6-8 points and the refs made some questionable off-ball calls on us which took them to the line and slowed the whole damn game down. Just the respite they needed.

3 things moving forward:
1) rebound the damn ball more consistently
2) find a rotation soon. Don't mess with kids heads playing them for 90 seconds and then sitting them back down. That's the worst thing for an athlete's psyche and I noticed some kids rolling their eyes last night.
3) find a way to improve outside shooting. Easier said than done but I believe in we can do a much better job than last night. Don't need to move hooper off screens and have him take a 3 off balance. Penetrate and move the ball till you get the right shooter in the right position.

Time to put together a nice winning streak after a bad-matchup to open!

"to a wide open whitey."
How old are you, 100?

Good post. Second half has me real optimistic. Just curious who did you see roll their eyes?

Honestly only Obekpa. Before his little fit with the officials. Still the rotation is a big problem both on/off court

I saw Obekpa give Lavin a really bad look on the bench while Lavin was talking to another player. Obekpa needs to grow up.

Didn't notice it but I guess chris O is taking over for Dlo as our new problem child. He is not a good enough player to get away with too much as he has already been suspended and we do have GG, JaKarr and Orlando to play the 4-5.

Please let's not jump to conclusions about Obekpa or anyone else. All I would say is that without an improved Obekpa, who showed some flashes of improved offensive prowess, this team is not as strong as we think it is. Let's move on to the next game, and watch this team put it together over the next month.

Not that it matters much anymore, but here is an article by Jay Bilas posted about a week ago. In the article he lists teams that he feels has the potential to make the Final Four. Wisconsin comes in at #13.

http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-col...on-college-basketball-opus-college-basketball

Here's what he had to say about Wisconsin:

"13. Wisconsin Badgers: Coach Bo Ryan gets a point guard back this season as Josh Gasser returns from injury. Add in Ben Brust and Sam Dekker, who could become a star this season, and you have another Ryan team capable of challenging in the Big Ten and beyond. The Badgers were excellent on the defensive end last season and took great care of the ball, but did not shoot it well from the field or the line. If this team is better on the offensive end, and it should be, Wisconsin will again be very good."

So maybe the loss on Friday is not as bad as everyone on this board is making it out to be...

Bilas also lists Obekpa and Dom as 2 of the top 12 lock down defenders (Chris at 4 and Dom at 7), and Jakarr at #12 on "The undervalued and underappreciated team"

I would put our entire team on the "undervalued and under appreciated team" list considering the complete over reactions on this board the last two days. I know folks are frustrated, but let's not get crazy here. One game guys. It was just one game.

Bilas obviously hasn't watched enough of our games then, because Obekpa is the complete opposite of a lock-down defender. He's a shot blocker.
But, his one on one defense was atrocious the other night. A guy who wants to be a defensive player of the year can't be giving up easy baskets in the post.
The shot blocking is great, but I see opposing big men take it to him with ease, and guards drive at him without any fear. It''s when you don't see him coming that he blocks shots from the weakside.
Tons of talent, but it needs to be developed. And truthfully, that's what his scouting report was coming in to college - raw. He exceeded expectations initially and I think some fans (myself included) expected him to become more well-rounded and soon. But he's still raw and developing as a basketball player, and it's not only on the offensive end that he's learning.

Of course it is way too early to jump to conclusions, and CO is still a young player. But it's not unfair to speculate he may be a problem. Gets suspended 2 exhibitions, showed a lack of emotional control with refs and lastly the "look" he had on the bench all night. That to me makes it very fair to make the comparison to the 2012-13 DLO. I do however, have a lot more faith in Obekpa to turn his attitude around than I had in Harrison last year.

That excuse has sailed; we were the more experienced team last night, at most, as experienced and we still played llike we needed to be introduced.

Odd how we went from being the youngest team in the nation at the end of last year to being an experienced one at the beginning of this year.

More odd to me how we played 4 guys in their third year and two in their second; all of whom have played together plus a 24 year old man and we looked as disjointed as we did. If you don't think that should represent an experienced team, well, so be it; we disagree.
