Wisconsin game

Seth Davis of SI talked about the game as part of his column this morning:

Wisconsin 86, St. John's 75

These are not your older brother's Wisconsin Badgers. Gone are the slow-it-down-and-punch-you-in-the-mouth plodders who were constantly compared to the dentist's chair. They have been replaced by a cutting, slashing, guard-oriented group that scores in bunches.

The best sight, however, wasn't the offense, it was the guy running it. Wisconsin's junior point guard Josh Gasser missed all of last season with a torn ACL, but you wouldn't have known it by watching him slice through the St. John's defense for 19 points. Sophomore forward Sam Dekker looked stronger, too; he grabbed eight rebounds and finished with 19 points. Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan only played seven guys double-digit minutes, so it looks like his team will have a thin bench. Given how infrequently Ryan's teams have always fouled, I don't think that will be much of a concern.

Despite the loss, I still think St. John's is an NCAA tournament team. The Red Storm is strong, athletic and -- finally -- experienced enough to get there. DeAngelo Harrison (27 points) and Jakarr Sampson (21) will be an effective inside-outside combo in the Big East. Freshman point guard Rysheed Jordan, who started the game, showed some flashes of potential during his 24 minutes.

But for me, the biggest revelation of the evening was Orlando Sanchez, St. John's 24-year-old senior forward from Dominican Republic who is playing his first year of Division I ball. You wouldn't know it from Sanchez's stat line (5 points, 3 rebounds, 4 fouls in 18 minutes), but he showed incredible ball skills in the open court for someone who stands a bullish 6-9, 215 pounds. Trust me on this: Sanchez is an NBA talent.

" Trust me on this: Sanchez is an NBA talent. "

I love this.... more guys we get in the NBA, the better the program will be.

That excuse has sailed; we were the more experienced team last night, at most, as experienced and we still played llike we needed to be introduced.

Odd how we went from being the youngest team in the nation at the end of last year to being an experienced one at the beginning of this year.

More odd to me how we played 4 guys in their third year and two in their second; all of whom have played together plus a 24 year old man and we looked as disjointed as we did. If you don't think that should represent an experienced team, well, so be it; we disagree.

I'm not surprised that they looked a little disheveled in the first 10 minutes of the first game of the season on the road against a top 25 team. YMMV.

Funny how everything this kid said on this post about st.johns I already have said this numerous times on many different posts on this site. We will still be a team that can make a deep run come tournament time and we will finish at worst 3 rd in the big east at best we finish 1st. Our johnnies will be fine this year despite the 1st loss to a disciplined Wisconsin team. I said it before I will say it again we have 5 NBA players on the roster, we will look back 6 years from now and look at how loaded our team was. Marillac and beast seem to disag

I don't see any difference from the end of last season..Harrison got his points in garbage time..granted he is a legit scorer..We cannot hit an outside shot, Lavin thinks he is gonna coach to the other teams strengths ie..we can play big, we can play small....why not make teams play to our strength which is depth...press the ball full court, get out and run..Playing match ups to other teams strengths is a recipe for disaster..we cannot shoot from the outside...so how do you overcome that?? run and press the ball full court..and Branch has showed me nothing..cant hit his foul shots, makes bad decisions, and turns the ball over..Please sit this kid down as he is not a starter in this conference...

Wisconsin starting to open it up. They fell behind early by 12 and are now are up by 10. So far not too impressed with Florida.

Sorry I thought he was on the telecast or something since the post came after the Wisconsin Florida posts. Thanks

Fwiw, Wisconsin just beat number 11 Florida. That Billy Donovan is just horrible.. And they started with a big lead too. Donovan's coaching adjustments or lack thereof must have been the cause of Florida's collapse...;-)

Well that takes a little bit of the sting out of the loss

LOL! I was not talking about Kentucky!

Funny thing about the Badgers but they did not hit the free throws down the stretch and Florida hung around.
Never the less I see the same offensive sets as against St. John;s Four guys hanging out at the three point line while
one player dribbles the ball down low. If any player jumps to double, the ball finds the open man, three pointer!
This offense was also seen in the VCU vs Virginia game with VCU deploying it. It's there in the films for all to see
including the scouting team for the opposition.

Right now I'd say Sampson and Jordan. Sanchez hasn't shown me enough to say he's going NBA. If hardy wasn't good enough to make the NBA, then Harrison isn't either.
