What's Up with Lavin?

It's funny how Jack gets comments about his age even though he'd be one of the older posters on a lot of message boards. Most message board posters are young (I started posting on other forums when I was 11). The average age on this forum is like 60 and that's an extreme outlier compared to other forums.

Much easier gig

Not to mention that his stupidity - a detriment in his chosen profession - is a boon on TV. Also the desk he sits behind will hide his giant pasta belly, so no more spanx and sweatsuits. All in all a match made in heaven.

Yawn

Oh dear I'm boring the 14 year olds. What period's home room, I'll try and work up some new material by then.

Too bad. At times, 14-year-olds seem to be your targeted audience.

I don't have a target audience. Just targets.

Damn you got me !!

First time in the history of Redmen that Jack has been pegged for being younger than he is.

Lavin in late stages of negotiations with Fox Sports.

I will be the first to say it. I hope he gets to do a SJU game or two. Of course he will probably be more situated in their west coast studios and games.

I wonder if Lav has spoken to Mullin since the change.

I wish him luck. He laid a good foundation for Mullin to build upon.

I know what you are saying. Not that he left Mullin with a deep roster, but that he restored the program to respectability. He inherited a first round NIT loser, which was the pinnacle of Robert's success after 6 seasons of miserable play in conference, and left Mullin with a team that went to the NCAA's twice in 5 years. The expectation for Mullin to succeed is, as a result higher than it was for Lavin.

Back where he's best suited and where I'd be willing to bet he'll spend the rest of his working days.

First off Beast I have no clue as to why Norm Roberts is drawn into this discussion. He is a good man who never should have been hired in the first place. I wish him all the very best but his record as head coach at Queens College was reason enough that he never should have had an interview, forget getting the job at SJU.
Secondly Lavin inherited a good team, five years later Lavin left a four man roster that combined for 10 points a game for next year.
No coach in the history of the program has ever left it in worse shape.
If not for the superb recruiting job our incomplete staff has done to date we would win 5 games next season. The only expectation we have for this staff to succeed is based on their superb effort that they have put in to date. Lavin's recruiting the past three seasons was nothing short of pathetic.

He has. Numerous times.

I was one who questioned you disappearing after your monasch prediction was off by months but I will man up right now and say maybe you were still right in your info because someone else who is definitely in the know told me Lavin has spoken to Mullin although I didn't know how many times and no one has reported that publicly other than what you just said and I know you are telling the truth on this.

So my apologies for calling you out for disappearing

.... he (Lavin) restored the program to respectability. Beast, please do not attempt to rewrite facts to make "Lav" appear to be big successes by comparing him to Coach Roberts..

Roberts, a good and decent man never should have been hired to be the head coach at St.John's. That being said Roberts inherited a team with less talent than "Lav", suffered the consequences of NCAA probation, but Roberts left the St.John's program with better talent than "Lav" and his hard(ly) working staff did.

Last season Lav's final team finished with a mediocre 10 - 8 Conference record being 5th place in the 10 team new weaker Big East Conference. He failed to recruit a roster of Big East quality players during his final 2 recruiting cycles. Lav's career conference win- loss record was a mediocre 40–32 (.556).

Lavin will probably never admit to this (I wouldn't expect anyone to), but I think, if he had to do it again, he would have resigned after his father died (at the end of that season, anyway).

He just never appeared to be the same man after that, at least not publically.

Beast, I think your intentions are good, but you are reaching to find reason to complement Lavin on his way out. He really didn't build a foundation for future success.
He raised the profile of the program, and excited the fanbase to some degree.
But going forward you're only as good as your future players. And our cupboard was essentially left bare.
And it's not like his successes on the court were momentous enough to leave an impression on future recruits. We weren't reaching sweet 16s or hanging banners.

Lavin left the program better off than he found it, but not by much.
There were peaks and valleys during his tenure, and unfortunately he left at a low point.
