What's Up with Lavin?

Instead, Bobby has foolishly misread the general interest in Chris Mullin as coach as something that will translate into high demand despite a rebuilding year. He should have checked Jordan's grades and Obekpa's intentions before pushing the "Wilpon" button on the need to increase ticket revenue.
.

Do you really think the university president determines how much season tickets cost? That he should be cognizant of the GPA of the basketball players and base his decisions accordingly? Maybe he was too busy making sure there was toilet paper in all the stalls in Century Hall to meeting with Obekpa?

A good seat for the basketball season at the Carrier Dome costs around $1600 these days, including their "Seatng Plan" in an area that has a median income of about $47,000 a year. This includes 10 games each year against the likes of Albany, Lemoyne, Colgate, Buffalo, and an occasional Idaho State U, or a S.E. Nevada U.. A single ticket to get in somewhere at the SunDome at the University of S. Florida will set you back $25 and you can sit all alone by yourself.

correct, Carolina prices similar. People don't know how good they have it. Wait to see what it costs when they start winning big time, whenever that is. Check Yankee tickets 1994 to now for reference

My sister has preferred seating at both football and basketball at Syracuse, and their prices are abusive, but people fill the place up.

I guess attractions in lovely Syracuse are somewhat limited.

Knight, I think we were talking about the price of tickets and not the lack of things to do in Syracuse.
Frank-fewer alternatives gives them more freedom to raise prices.

If SJU/Bobby focuses too much on raising revenue before building a program, he will delay building a strong in person following. CA, whether filled with $60 ticket purchasers, or $5 CYO players, generates noise, excitement and a home court advantage. IMO there will be those of us who will renew season tickets no matter what. But some fans who were excited at the Mullin news and were thinking tourney team next season will now delay any ticket purchases until we are ranked.

After every season we say this will be our last. Then something in the offseason happens, plus amazing seats two rows off the floor at MSG, and we say screw it lets do it one more time. This year was legitimately going to be our first year we actually say no. Then Mullin's hired and all the high end recruiting followed so we are like okay, perhaps one more year yet again, thinking at least 1 or 2 of the recruits will blossom and complement CO and RJ, we would be a powerhouse. They're both gone and theres no real objective chance we are dominant or make the tourney. And yet ticket prices have skyrocketed, and we've reverted back to our original thought on next season, which is to forget it.

There is no AD at present. Bobby was extremely visible during the Mullin press conference, at the welcome home dinner, and certainly had to approve and advocate for his hiring. He is a $$ and cents guy and already froze university wages. Yes, I believe when consulted about the hire and subsequently gauging media interest, that without an AD, approved and maybe even suggested raising prices.

True to form I will see you at the games. We are sheep, remember? :)

Perhaps he should focus on social skills opposed to increasing the price of b-ball tickets. . . .

If there are 3000 season ticket holders the price increase amounts to $ 195,000. Saint John's has an endowment of 650 million dollars. 195,000 is carry the one .03 of 650 million. If the dollars and cents guy university president has spent one second of his two month tenure thinking about what amounts to less than one percent of his endowment, he should have his head examined. If he's consulting with Chris Obekpa before doing so - your suggestion - he should be fired.

I agree with all of your points, but I do think that the school got caught up in the enthusiasm of the press conference, when about 2,000 fans, former players, and media type showed up for the official announcement. The amount of additional revenue raised IS insignificant, but I do think that when the price increase was set, there was lots of talk (on here) of this being a tourney team. Talk of a tourney team was based on CO and Jordan returning with a better supporting cast.

You say that Bobby G. doesn't have time to focus on this stuff, but at the press conference, he said he reads SJU basketball blogs, which I took to mean redmen.com.

Safe to say the horse is dead on the ticket price increase, no? :)

Redmen dot com is not a blog.http://www.bigeastboards.com/ is a blog. If he's reading that the program is in good hands.

:) Do people post of bigeastboards.com after every game and asked to join in the discussion at redmen.com?

Hope you are having a good summer.

Going back to student days, lots of things at SJU were not bound to change, but it didn't stop anyone from complaining. :)
