Instead, Bobby has foolishly misread the general interest in Chris Mullin as coach as something that will translate into high demand despite a rebuilding year. He should have checked Jordan's grades and Obekpa's intentions before pushing the "Wilpon" button on the need to increase ticket revenue.
.
Do you really think the university president determines how much season tickets cost? That he should be cognizant of the GPA of the basketball players and base his decisions accordingly? Maybe he was too busy making sure there was toilet paper in all the stalls in Century Hall to meeting with Obekpa?
There is no AD at present. Bobby was extremely visible during the Mullin press conference, at the welcome home dinner, and certainly had to approve and advocate for his hiring. He is a $$ and cents guy and already froze university wages. Yes, I believe when consulted about the hire and subsequently gauging media interest, that without an AD, approved and maybe even suggested raising prices.
If there are 3000 season ticket holders the price increase amounts to $ 195,000. Saint John's has an endowment of 650 million dollars. 195,000 is carry the one .03 of 650 million. If the dollars and cents guy university president has spent one second of his two month tenure thinking about what amounts to less than one percent of his endowment, he should have his head examined. If he's consulting with Chris Obekpa before doing so - your suggestion - he should be fired.
I agree with all of your points, but I do think that the school got caught up in the enthusiasm of the press conference, when about 2,000 fans, former players, and media type showed up for the official announcement. The amount of additional revenue raised IS insignificant, but I do think that when the price increase was set, there was lots of talk (on here) of this being a tourney team. Talk of a tourney team was based on CO and Jordan returning with a better supporting cast.
You say that Bobby G. doesn't have time to focus on this stuff, but at the press conference, he said he reads SJU basketball blogs, which I took to mean redmen.com.
