What's Up with Lavin?

And the ticket price increase to pay for his buyout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously my tickets jumped $65 from $350 for the last 2 years or so to $415 this season. They had been increasing $25 every few seasons but $65 is a major jump for a season with low expectations W-L wise. I think it was fair to raise prices as they were a great deal but $65 is an 18.5% increase. That said I will likely still do it. Anyone know if they will be offering a Garden package this year? I have several people interested for those tickets.

In my case the increase is worth it because Mike Maher comes with the deal. Though it is sometimes January before we see him
well that just got you a a karma increase :)

Another bad move by SJU when they need to increase fan base. I believe they got themselves excited about the Mullin hype, but have severely miscalculated what that will mean at the turnstiles, especially now that it appears next season will be challenging.

I paid about $600 per ticket last year. Does anyone know what they are going for?

$690

How do you feel about that? That's a pretty huge jump without Mullin suiting up.
I have two of cheaper seats, but was also surprised.
I was surprised too.

But stormsaver still the way to go but they are gonna start pricing people out if when people know next year we aren't going to be that good

It will be interesting because old donors are certainly back in the fold now so I'm curious if the Mullin effect increases ticket sales. My guess is it does but ticket increases way higher than the inflation rate will take it's toll eventually unless we start winning big down the road

The danger they face is that with a team that may be sub .500, people won't hop on the bandwagon, and some will hop off just as fast.

Agreed which is why I think they should have promotions at MSG like buy 1 bronx pale ale get the second one free

People will come out (or should) to support Chris and Co. in Year 1. Even though this will be, in my opinion, probably the worst year of the Mullin era, I and others I know will show up to support the program.

Glad to hear you are back. Are you saying that you will be purchasing season tickets, or planning to attend a few games? It's just a phenomenally bad move to raise ticket prices simply based on a coaching change in a season likely to be the worst since Lavin's second season. The euphoria of Mullin coming home will evaporate quickly unless the product that is on the floor is competitive. I'd rather they rebuilt the fan base to where demand is quantifiable based on increased sales.

Compare SJU to the Mets, who have built what appear to be a .500 team loaded with some of the best young arms in baseball. They are steeply discounting tickets in order to put even 25-30,000 fans in the house. The most expensive seats behind home plate continually are largely empty.

As it is, a single non discounted ticket to MSG in the lower bowl cost somewhere around $80 last season. Even with a competitive team, most games were sharply discounted in promotions. I do think that part of the strategy is to offset having to pay Lavin's buyout as well as Mullin's salary. I'd love to be wrong, and see a 20% boost in ticket sales next season, but with increased prices for what will be a challenging season, I don't see this happening.

This a farce. How about win some games first, then jack the prices up. What about the loyal people who have supported the program the last 10-15 and still paid the ridiculous donation fee and then ticket fee. This is how the university responds? We have no real chance to compete next year, that's a fair observation for the season with a roster full of first year guys, and they do this. I wonder whose call it was?? Is this season even worth it?

A good seat for the basketball season at the Carrier Dome costs around $1600 these days, including their "Seatng Plan" in an area that has a median income of about $47,000 a year. This includes 10 games each year against the likes of Albany, Lemoyne, Colgate, Buffalo, and an occasional Idaho State U, or a S.E. Nevada U.. A single ticket to get in somewhere at the SunDome at the University of S. Florida will set you back $25 and you can sit all alone by yourself.

correct, Carolina prices similar. People don't know how good they have it. Wait to see what it costs when they start winning big time, whenever that is. Check Yankee tickets 1994 to now for reference

My sister has preferred seating at both football and basketball at Syracuse, and their prices are abusive, but people fill the place up.

I guess attractions in lovely Syracuse are somewhat limited.

Knight, I think we were talking about the price of tickets and not the lack of things to do in Syracuse.

Syracuse has had slightly more success in basketball than SJU over the past few years, no? Supply and demand. You don't increase prices before demand is quantifiable - anyone with a PhD in farm economics should know that. Seats to a game is a lot like produce. Once the game passes and you haven't sold seats, it's as worthless as rotting corn.

Frank-fewer alternatives gives them more freedom to raise prices.

If SJU/Bobby focuses too much on raising revenue before building a program, he will delay building a strong in person following. CA, whether filled with $60 ticket purchasers, or $5 CYO players, generates noise, excitement and a home court advantage. Instead, Bobby has foolishly misread the general interest in Chris Mullin as coach as something that will translate into high demand despite a rebuilding year. He should have checked Jordan's grades and Obekpa's intentions before pushing the "Wilpon" button on the need to increase ticket revenue.

IMO there will be those of us who will renew season tickets no matter what. But some fans who were excited at the Mullin news and were thinking tourney team next season will now delay any ticket purchases until we are ranked.
