@NYPost_Brazille: College coach who was recruiting Keith Thomas in spring said transcript was a mess when he saw it, and never offered as result. #sjubb

And now I take back my comments about Lavin having no culpability yesterday.

assuming that it was true and that the anonymous coach actually had any chance whatsoever of signing him rather than some anonymous agenda to take an easy shot anonymously against a recruiting rival with zero chance of being held accountable for it.

It is true. Multiple staffs inquired and saw his qualifying situation was dicey.

But he was cleared to play, by the NCAA. And surely they had to know that his transcripts were dicey. So Lavin rolls the dice with this kid because he has no other options. The kid is cleared by the NCAA. Blame Lavin all you want for not having other options, but at the end of the day a higher authority cleared the kid. Besides, unless I missed something, we still don't know why the kid was declared ineligible. Could be one class was doctored, or of course if could be similar to Walker situation. Just don't think we have enough info yet to say for certain that Lavin knew or should have known. This is really tough for me, I just not used to defending Lavin.

He was cleared to play AFTER committing to St John's and being recruited by St John's. Lavin and staff offered him a scholarship and accepted his commitment before ever knowing if he would be cleared or not. It's not like SJU waited for NCAA to declare him as qualified before they recruited him.

Again, with no other options available, and with time quickly running out on Thomas, he would have had to have offered him. Just the same way tons of coaches offer before knowing whether a kid will be cleared to play.

First, nothing has been said that ANY class/grade was doctored at all for Thomas.

This could just be CYA. A preemptive action by St Johns until the smoke clears with WCC. At this point there are no facts other than one assistant coach and two players. Only St John's has acted. NJCAA hasn't. NCAA hasn't.

Paul I didn't say a class was doctored. I said it could be that a class was doctored, or it could be nothing, or it could be a Walker situation....... We simply don't know. Although I highly doubt that St. Johns and Lavin would have cut bait so quickly, and without putting up a fight, if there was nothing of significance known to them.

Nothing would surprise me but being snake bit I could definitely see preemptive CYA moving into action quickly. And look how it played out with Sanchez. Ultimately NCAA figured it out but screwed him over anyway. A big state school can afford to put up a fight with NCAA, St John's can't.

The State Inspector General's Office is conducting a criminal investigation. I suspect, as they squeeze folks, we'll get a better sense of the scope of the scam & individual culpability. It seems implausible that an assistant coach in isolation master minded this nonsense. What a mess.

yes I meant the word "afford" to go beyond just the dollars. Those states are pretty selective though when it comes to the battles they choose as is the NCAA with them. For example the way the NCAA treat Ucon numerous violations vs how they treat highly questionable to even call violations at Central CT State.

agreed on all counts

I vehemently disagree.
First off, SJU's press release said he was academically ineligible. This was not a preemptive action. The school's own words are that they looked into it and he's not eligible to play.

They're not cutting ties with a player they were relying on for big minutes just because WCC is in the news. If they could, they would defend their player. (and rightfully so)

I think it's a simple answer: I actually think they asked him directly about the situation -- something they had no reason to do back in the spring -- and he told them the truth. And now he's gone because of the answer he gave.

I had high hopes for him -- I really was expecting 9 rpg, so bummed he's gone. But I wish him well. In all honesty, I actually think I am just as pissed at ADLR for not taking his fitness more seriously as I am at the KT situation. We need the big guy more than ever now, and he seemingly didn't eat anything that wasn't deep fried and basted with chocolate the entire offseason

A+ for using your daily power words.

Agree Desco. By bouncing him off the team so quickly, SJU is pronouncing him guilty . They would not do that unless they had very good reason, otherwise, they could get sued, I would imagine.

They pronounced him guilty of being academically ineligible. In this context light years different from what is going on at FL A&M. That is my point of contention with all of these insinuations. Before gathering the Lynch Mob, stick to the facts. No need to get vehement ;)

Good point on the vehemence. :)
But how did he get cleared by the NCAA?

And why was Lavin waiting so long to fill so many important minutes for the next year? Therein lies the problem. You're right, he had few to no options available. Which is his own fault because he sat on his rear-end for the bulk of the 2014 class and should've been recruiting in case a kid left (as Jakarr did) or something. It's ultimately his own fault.

I agree in the sense that we don't know what happened yet, and it certainly doesn't mean that Keith is in the same boat as the other two kids from FAMU. He might not have had his transcript doctored as much, he might not even have known it happened (as they almost certainly did).
My point is just that this wasn't preemptive. SJU found out he can't play.
If he could, he would be suiting up this season. They weren't going to sit a kid just because WCC is getting bad press and they are afraid of the NCAA.

Speaking of ADR and fitness, was just having a conversation about that with a buddy this morning. IMO, he should forget the whole trimming down idea and just hit the weight room real hard. I don't care how much he ever trims down, he's always going to be slow as molasses. With his shear girth and decent skill sets, IMO if he's built like a brick house he can dominate down low on both ends. Plus firming up has got to be a whole lot easier for him then trimming down.

Can't argue with you there Rab. This time last year I began bitching about so few offers being tendered to top prospects while the excuses piled up like crap that the coaches were focusing on the 2015 class. Bottom line is our intrepid staff recruited 3 walk ons, a non-qualifier, a slug that is 3 years away from contributing and a last minute Euro that is our best recruit. Great planning coaches!! Regardless of the won-loss record this season Lavin's future will be sealed by Fall commitments and if he gets none he will be gone next Spring.

Just a question to those excoriating Lavin now: If we didn't offer Thomas a scholarship, what monster talent was next on our list who we let go by? Until Lavin's cupboard is stocked with Grade A recruits that he has his pick of, there will be more questionable recruits. The question should not be why he brought Thomas in, but about the lack of success in this class recruiting high level talent.

My frat brother that still works at SJU said he saw ADLR on the taco bell line in marillac just yesterday. SMH
