Welcome back LJ Figueroa
It is very difficult to be a good team without a solid point guard.
Agree. And, darn near impossible to be a good team that plays fast without multiple solid pg's.

As Kred posted Mullin brought in athletes , Ponds, LoVett, Simon, L.J., Williams, Roberts, all suited for a pressing type defense for a team lacking in height and played a take an open three whenever you get it offense.
Another Mullin head scratcher.

IMHO......I think Greg Williams is being underestimated. I am looking for him to surprise on the upside.

Regarding McGriff, I am expecting nothing. It's historically rare for a lower ranked, undersize, freshman PG to make an impact at this level. Yes, it could happen.......but highly unlikely. As has been stated, we'll need an experienced, BE level ball handler. He wouldn't have to shoulder a lot of scoring, just get the ball up the court and keep it moving.

I agree with you. I would just add that I think the style of play Coach MA wants to play better fits GW. He is athletic and will benefit in that type of game. Our team was more pull up for 3s and he is not currently a great shooter. I look forward to see what he can do next season. We do still an experienced point. Just not sure if we can get that done. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

____

My understanding is that Bryan is still in the transfer portal but remains uncommitted. Personally I would not be disappointed if he returns to StJohn's for the coming season.

Trimble's on court performance may improve with better coaching.
I disagree. Trimble is too slow and his only game is as a subpar 3pt shooter.
And I hate to be harsh but imo, he left the program when he opted to transfer.
Question: Is he still on the roster?
Or did he void his ‘ship by entering the portal?
There is technically no roster yet. The kid is still an SJU student and no he didn’t void his scholarship (but they are renewable every year)
Again, not being harsh and I’m the first to defend a kid being pushed out but guys who voluntarily enter the transfer portal are saying they are no longer loyal to the team. They opt to leave.
I’m such cases, why should the team be loyal to them?
Now I know this for a fact: on the heels of the Mullin and Matt departures, just about every kid on the roster and their parents were reaching out to the guy they knew best, GSJ, who spent an enormous amount of his time reassuring and calming them. Every kid looking for a quality D1 experience that would help their future playing somewhere was rightfully concerned.

Nothing wrong with any player exploring his options.

A quality hire like Anderson kept LJ here but a big assist to gsj for selflessly thinking about the kids and school first even though his tenure his was over.

Sounds very classy of GSJ. Anyone know what he has planned next? Young guy who with his bloodline has a big future ahead.

He really wanted this job, and put together a proposed staff and strategy as part of his interview here. There was almost no chance of him getting the job unless he blew the interviewers away, which he may have well done.

Imhope.he stays in college. He showed great maturity in being a coach and not a pal to kids a few years younger than him. I believe he was constricted by Mullin's NBA type declarative, such as "if you are open and you don't shoot, I'll take you out ".

I'm reading Bobby knights most recent book, and man does he make a ton of sense talking basketball. Lots of things that didnt happen here during Mullins progression as a hc.

GSJ will do fine, and many if us will root for his teams as a result of his solid work here.

Early prediction on St. John's 19-20 starting five: Greg Williams, Eli Wright, Mustapha Heron, LJ Figueroa, Ian Steere. #SJUBB

Get an experienced PG.
I suppose it's possible Rothstein was told this by a coach that Williams is starter, but for me right now, it's:

PG: McGriff
SG: Heron
SF: Figueroa
C: Steere
PF: Roberts

or

PG: McGriff
SG: Heron
SF: Wright
C: Steere
PF: Figueroa

Obviously landing a starter-quality PG will be huge.
Welcome back L.J.... smart move!!

Would like to see us land another point or combo guard & another big man. Especially since Steere has to sit out to late December.
He may not get it, but isn’t Steere (and St. John’s) seeking a waiver on that?
Have no idea Chicago, but sure as heck hope you’re right!

This is a team made for four man position less basketball..........oh, wait a minute........
This team is made to run and press. I can see Roberts, Steere, Figueroa, Heron and McGriff starting with Williams, Wright, Caraher, Gaines and Ellington. Plus, we have two or three ‘ships left for improvements. Not bad considering what everyone, including myself, thought the day before coach Anderson was hired. If he can bring in another point, a scorer and a big forward we might have a good team.

So we should not have been “loyal” to Figueroa? He did the same thing you seem to have a problem with Trimble doing.
Apples and oranges. It was a business decision. Figgy opted to ‘explore opportunities’. We wanted him to stay. He returned.we took him back. Wise ‘choices’ on both parties’ parts, imo.
Trimble, a fringe player, opted to leave. Imo he won’t fit well in CMA’s system and I would like to see him go elsewhere. So, his decision pleased me.
IF Trimble had stayed, you wouldn’t have heard a peep outta me, because he was a member of the team, played hard, kept his grades up, his part of the deal, and should stay.
But he opted to leave. His choice.
Now, IF he can’t find a suitable D1 or scholastic. spot elsewhere, it would be ‘classy’ to allow him back on the team, but now that decision is also based on our roster needs since he, Trimble, opened the door initially.
That’s my view.

Hypocritical rationalization worthy of a politician. The bottom line is you saw Figueroa as a "must keep", which he was, and Trimble as expendable. The only apples and oranges were in your view of the two players.

Not at all and do not call me a hypocrite or a politician. I’m neither.
Many on this Board support dumping’ players to get a stud recruit. I don’t.
I also favor these transfer rules giving players more leeway, but choices have consequences.
IF Trimble can’t find a suitable spot, it’d be classy to ‘renew’ his ‘ship, but now that is a ‘business’ decision on St. John’s part that is complicated and is based on several variables, including our roster needs and also team cohesion.
But Trimble opened the door...

Who are you trying to con - yes, to you it is a business decision based on the relative worth of each player; putting their name in the transfer portal, your original premise, has nothing to do with that "business decision." Hypocrisy at its finest.

Figgy leaves, returns. We cringe/then say, whew, sure, thanks for returning.
He’s the guy with the leverage.
Trimble leaves/ can’t get a spot...do we take him back.
Business decision.
The end.
Who are you trying to con - yes, to you it is a business decision based on the relative worth of each player; putting their name in the transfer portal, your original premise, has nothing to do with that "business decision." Hypocrisy at its finest.
Logen to me Chicago Days' position seems pretty straightforward and neither a con nor hypocritical, whether one agrees with it or not. Seems to me he's saying when a member of SJU's team puts their name in the transfer portal, SJU's obligation to them effectively ends. From that point SJU is within ethical bounds to treat each situation based on what they believe best serves the team. Wanting LJ back since he's a potential star player who fits the new system well and not wanting Trimble back because he's neither makes perfect sense based on CD's position about our obligation to a player ending when they choose to explore transferring. And because CD seems to be quite an agreeable fellow he also added it would be nice if SJU took Trimble back if he cant find another spot, notwithstanding his view that SJU's not ethically obligated to do so.

So we should not have been “loyal” to Figueroa? He did the same thing you seem to have a problem with Trimble doing.
Apples and oranges. It was a business decision. Figgy opted to ‘explore opportunities’. We wanted him to stay. He returned.we took him back. Wise ‘choices’ on both parties’ parts, imo.
Trimble, a fringe player, opted to leave. Imo he won’t fit well in CMA’s system and I would like to see him go elsewhere.so, his decision
pleased me.
My last word since your responses are nothing but tap dances around my question, if the shoe fits...........................
Thanks REB. You said it better than me! Lol.

Plus, we have two or three ‘ships left for improvements. Not bad considering what everyone, including myself, thought the day before coach Anderson was hired. If he can bring in another point, a scorer and a big forward we might have a good team.

Assuming Bryan Trimble does wind up transferring as he previously announced, we will have three scholarships left. Personally, I'd prefer to see us save one of those for 2020 which will be a big year for grabbing a few key recruits as we only have Mustapha definitely leaving after this year. We can still use 2 of the 3 schollies to hopefully grab a solid PG or combo guard and another frontcourt player and be in good shape for 2019.

Heron is technically the only Sr.
But I think we can put another ? around LJ after another solid season.
Also Eli Wright would be eligible to be a grad transfer.

But I do agree about holding 1 ship.
