Welcome back LJ Figueroa

Maybe McGriff will be really good didn’t Georgetown have a freshman pg.?
No one on here will know until the games start. Forget the hs rankings this is college that stuff is overrated. Not saying the kid will be good or bad but Keita and Yakwe were 4 stars and didnt do much. 3 star players succeed all the time in college, not talking nba here, especially now with all the transfers. You think Sestina was thought of as a Kentucky level kid coming out of HS? You just never know.
Still say we need a seasoned PG to lead the team next year, but you're right Dan V. 'You never know" and kids outperform under perform their rankings all the time.
McClung was a 3* and ranked #245 by 247sports last year and had a great season: killed us for sure. Lol.
Akinjo also played well for the Hoyas, but he was a 4*.
McGriff is 'small-sized', a 3* and ranked 334 this year.
I think he might be a nice 'piece' for us, but he's been described as 'tough as s**t' and ya neva know.
We shall see.

Bottom line is that we need more, and we need some real talent. I’m not doubting McGriff and Sears, but we already have Earlington, Roberts and even Caraher who I don’t think we can count on as huge contributors, and even Williams only got limited time. That’s half the team. Need the next guy or two to be legitimate Big East talents ala Thornton or similar. I’m all good with having the numbers and we are certainly behind the 8-ball with a new staff this late in the game, but need another guy or two with legit talent. I’m not expecting an amazing season next year regardless, but if we can grab a real contributor at PG and C, we might be able to hurt teams with pressure and depth alone, coupled with some coaching. 2020 class is where the real recruiting should start and it seems we are working hard and getting involved with lots of good prospects.

Well said, MCNPA.
Most likely, we'll have 2 - 3 'ships available for 2020, maybe 1 - 2 more, with guys entering the infamous 'transfer portal'.
Next year's 2020 recruiting class will be critical in shaping the future.
Totally agree we need a solid BE-level PG + 1 more solid C/PF type guy for the 2019-20 season.

If we can't find a BE caliber PG and/or "big" for next season, I would hold the scholarships and save them for the Class of 2020. Makes more sense IMO than bringing in a high school kid that doesn't project to be able to contribute in the short term.

I'd go for the 'next' best available PG/Combo Guard for 2019-20. Wouldn't want to go into the season with just 1 PG.
Otherwise, I agree.
Hold any remaining 'ships for 2020, if the 'right' players aren't available.
Four quoted responses seems like a good limit.
Yeah, but '40' hits the record books.
Lol.
Is Mikey Dixon still available?
I wish he would of stuck it out.

If the "next best available" guard can contribute, I'm all for it. But, if he isn't good enough to play at the BE level, why burn a scholarship on him for potentially four years?

The optimum situation would be getting a grad transfer for next season freeing up that scholarship for the following year.

____

My understanding is that Bryan is still in the transfer portal but remains uncommitted. Personally I would not be disappointed if he returns to StJohn's for the coming season.

Trimble's on court performance may improve with better coaching.
I disagree. Trimble is too slow and his only game is as a subpar 3pt shooter.
And I hate to be harsh but imo, he left the program when he opted to transfer.
Question: Is he still on the roster?
Or did he void his ‘ship by entering the portal?
There is technically no roster yet. The kid is still an SJU student and no he didn’t void his scholarship (but they are renewable every year)
Again, not being harsh and I’m the first to defend a kid being pushed out but guys who voluntarily enter the transfer portal are saying they are no longer loyal to the team. They opt to leave.
I’m such cases, why should the team be loyal to them?
So we should not have been “loyal” to Figueroa? He did the same thing you seem to have a problem with Trimble doing.
Apples and oranges. It was a business decision. Figgy opted to ‘explore opportunities’. We wanted him to stay. He returned.we took him back. Wise ‘choices’ on both parties’ parts, imo.
Trimble, a fringe player, opted to leave. Imo he won’t fit well in CMA’s system and I would like to see him go elsewhere.so, his decision pleased me.
IF Trimble had stayed, you wouldn’t have heard a peep outta me, because he was a member of the team, played hard, kept his grades up, his part of the deal, and should stay.
But he opted to leave. His choice.
Now, IF he can’t find a suitable D1 or scholastic. spot elsewhere, it would be ‘classy’ to allow him back on the team, but now that decision is also based on our roster needs since he, Trimble, opened the door initially.
That’s my view.
Hypocritical rationalization worthy of a politician. The bottom line is you saw Figueroa as a "must keep", which he was, and Trimble as expendable. The only apples and oranges were in your view of the two players.
And, what’s wrong with that... the moment they entered the portal they effectively restarted their recruitment...it was their choice...LJ was worthy of being re-recruited...Trimble not so much

If you can’t read through the thread and discern the obvious double standard of merely entering the portal applied by the poster, I can’t help you. Figueroa wanted to “explore opportunities” but Trimble, “a fringe player, opted to leave”. To date, Trimble has not committed anywhere else and IMO entering the portal should have nothing to do with whether or not a player is re-recruited or not since scholarships are already renewed on a yearly basis. The portal merely gives the player similar options as the coach, one decides if I want him back, one decides do I want to come back. To use the portal as a reason for not renewing a scholarship, based merely on the perception of “loyalty”, Chicago Days original point, is punitive IMO and totally unnecessary since a coach annually has the power to not renew regardless of the portal.

So, if you’re significant other said “I want to see what else is out there”, you would be obligated to take her back when she finds nothing.

Gimme a break...They both risked their scholarship LJ had leverage, Trimble didn’t

No matter what a player's 'status' is, 'exploring opportunities, opting out, or re-opening one's recruitment' are simply buzz words for the same act of 'entering the transfer portal'.
When a player enters the transfer portal, he is saying he wants to leave his program.
Period.
I support a player's right to do that given the still lop-sided playing field that exists in all of college sports.
But, that said, all 'rights' have risks.
A 'star' player can opt to transfer with impunity while a 'fringe' player risks his 'ship, if he cannot find a suitable spot away.
I've said that St. John's should keep Trimble on scholarship if he cannot find a spot elsewhere.
And given it's so late in the cycle, he probably returns, but he did 're-open his recruitment, he did opt out, he did explore opportunities' by entering the transfer portal...and since he's a 'fringe player', he did risk his scholarship.
That's that.
Enough said.
