Welcome back LJ Figueroa
Affirmed: Mike Anderson will continue his streak of winning seasons.
I feel better about next season but I’m not ‘there’ yet unless we get a seasoned PG at the least.

My understanding is that Bryan is still in the transfer portal but remains uncommitted. Personally I would not be disappointed if he returns to StJohn's for the coming season.

Trimble's on court performance may improve with better coaching.
I disagree. Trimble is too slow and his only game is as a subpar 3pt shooter.
And I hate to be harsh but imo, he left the program when he opted to transfer.
Question: Is he still on the roster?
Or did he void his ‘ship by entering the portal?
There is technically no roster yet. The kid is still an SJU student and no he didn’t void his scholarship (but they are renewable every year)

Early prediction on St. John's 19-20 starting five: Greg Williams, Eli Wright, Mustapha Heron, LJ Figueroa, Ian Steere. #SJUBB

Get an experienced PG.
I suppose it's possible Rothstein was told this by a coach that Williams is starter, but for me right now, it's:

PG: McGriff
SG: Heron
SF: Figueroa
C: Steere
PF: Roberts

or

PG: McGriff
SG: Heron
SF: Wright
C: Steere
PF: Figueroa

Obviously landing a starter-quality PG will be huge.

Welcome back L.J.... smart move!!

Would like to see us land another point or combo guard & another big man. Especially since Steere has to sit out to late December.

Again, not being harsh and I’m the first to defend a kid being pushed out but guys who voluntarily enter the transfer portal are saying they are no longer loyal to the team. They opt to leave.
In such cases, why should the team be loyal to them?

He may not get it, but isn’t Steere (and St. John’s) seeking a waiver on that?

So we should not have been “loyal” to Figueroa? He did the same thing you seem to have a problem with Trimble doing.

Like everyone has said this is outstanding news! There is good talent on this roster with several players that look like a good fit in this system. I am not so much worried about the starting lineup as I trust Anderson will get a lot of players involved. The obvious concern is point guard. It is very difficult to be a good team without a solid point guard. McGriff is a freshman and the most we can expect of him is to be part of the solution. Thornton would be great imo and if they don't land him I am sure they will find someone else. The quality of this addition will likely determine how far we can go.

Amazing news after Zion letdown and Jets typical circus. Now with LJ aboard and hopefully Heron staying, we may be mediocre instead of awful but hopefully better than expected. Much more bearable to watch. I think we are a solid PG and a solid big away from being able to maybe surprise people. Anyone know if there's any chance we land quality recruits still for this year? Seems we are plugging holes with whatever we can get at this point but would be nice to get at least 1 more impact player for next year. By the way I also listened to Sear talking about MA and how he felt a family type vibe right away when he recruited him. Gave him lots of kudos. We may not land the 5 star type guys but I'm confident we should be able to get those elusive 4 year high 3 star type guys here consistently.
Maybe McGriff will be really good didn’t Georgetown have a freshman pg.?
No one on here will know until the games start. Forget the hs rankings this is college that stuff is overrated. Not saying the kid will be good or bad but Keita and Yakwe were 4 stars and didnt do much. 3 star players succeed all the time in college, not talking nba here, especially now with all the transfers. You think Sestina was thought of as a Kentucky level kid coming out of HS? You just never know.

+1 - My sentiments exactly Andrew. We need that one more piece (solid PG or combo guard) that can share PG duties with McGriff. I could see Williams evolving into playing some point over time, but not much this year. He should have a good year as a wing.

I think Greg Williams showed a lot of promise last year. I think he will fit perfect with coaches style of play
Williams and Wright seem tailor made for a press and trap system.
Yep.

This may have been said already, but when we pulled not one but two rabbits out of the hat late last year in Heron and Figgy it was noted by many that not only was it big for 18-19 being NCAA-caliber, but the cupboard not being empty for 19-20.

Obviously the latter only became of heightened import with a coaching change.

Almost difficult to quantify the criticality of Heron and Figgy being back, and credit to MA and staff for getting that done.

But also credit to Matt A for seemingly having the relationships and being in position to land these two great players around this time last year. Not saying he was perfect, but getting 1 let alone 2 kids this good in the fashion he did is not easy, and doing so made the new staff's job quite a bit less challenging in Year 1.

I agree 100% that Wright & Williams should thrive in MA's system and will be great in a trapping defense. However, as far as I am aware neither of them have any significant experience playing point on offense and bringing the ball up against a pressing defense which we will see for sure. We need someone to fill that role along with McGriff.

Yes if he plays as well as Ajinko I would be thrilled. Like said above you never know.

It would be nice if we wound up with a match between the style we play and the abilities of the players we have
