Welcome back Julian!

Smart kid;

St. John's forwward Julian Champagnie said he feels there is a very positive feel for program at moment in the area, though this is still New York City. "We all know in this area if you lose one after winning six they want to kill you."
Zach B

It didn’t happen in high school. It didn’t happen on the AAU circuit. It didn’t happen his freshman year of college.Julian Champagnie, in fact, can’t remember ever being an offense’s focal point, being his team’s go-to guy, the player everyone looks to in crunch time. This year is a first.“It’s a different look, it’s a different dynamic,” St. John’s standout sophomore forward said in a phone interview in advance of Tuesday’s critical contest against Xavier at Carnesecca Arena. “It’s still the same Julian, but I try to produce at a higher level.”Champagnie, the well-rounded 6-foot-8 Brooklyn native out of Bishop Loughlin, has exploded after a strong freshman season. He leads the Big East in scoring at 19.7 points per game. He’s sixth in the league — and first on St. John’s (13-8, 7-7) — in rebounding (7.4). He’s seventh in the conference in 3-point shooting (42.5 percent), seventh in blocked shots (1.3) and second in free-throw shooting (86.4 percent). At this point, it would be a surprise if he’s not a first team all-league selection.

“You’re seeing a guy develop right before your eyes,” St. John’s coach Mike Anderson said. “He spends a lot of time in the gym. He really works at it. He’ll grab our coaches, our managers, [to work extra with him].”

He’s been the Johnnies’ rock, the one constant in an up-and-down season that saw a slow start in league play followed by a furious streak to get them into the NCAA Tournament mix. Despite being at the top of the scouting report — Champagnie is the player opposing coaches set a game plan for — he has reached double figures in scoring in all 19 games he’s appeared in.After averaging 27 points in his first two games of the season against Boston College and BYU, it became obvious Champagnie was the key to this team, that he had worked hard in the offseason. He was doing things he had never done before — sinking jump shots on the move, creating offense for himself and others. The departure of LJ Figueroa, last year’s leading scorer, created a scoring void Champagnie has ably filled.

t wasn’t an easy transition for a player who has never been in that role before. Champagnie will get frustrated at times at the extra defensive attention he draws. He’s still adjusting, understanding when he has to look for his offense and how best to make double-teams pay.“I’m not used to people keying on me, and saying, ‘We can’t [let him] score,’” Champagnie said. He’s happiest with the strides he has made as a leader in his sophomore year, something Anderson has emphasized. He’s quiet by nature, so he won’t yell at teammates or bark out instructions, but lately he’s done more to make his voice heard. Champagnie prefers to lead by example, with his work ethic, determination and desire. He’s become the face of the program, the player who speaks to the media the most.

He echoes Anderson, rarely talking about himself, always praising his teammates. The reason, he said, for St. John’s improved play is everyone has contributed, declining to take credit for the program’s recent 180.“It’s not like it’s a one-man team,” he said.Even in the rare games Champagnie’s shot isn’t falling, he has found a way to make an impact by rebounding, defending and sharing the ball. He came up big late in key wins over UConn and No. 10 Villanova by making the simple play, drawing a foul or getting to the rim rather than settling for a jump shot. Poor games or bad stretches haven’t stayed with him.“I’m happy with my mental development,” Champagnie said.Happy, but not content. Champagnie said his goal at the season’s outset was to be Big East Player of the Year. He wants to play in the NCAA Tournament next month. When asked about his star’s season, Anderson didn’t want to think about it in the past tense.“We’re not done yet,” he said.

Julian Champagnie updated BE ranks with 1 game to play:

ppg - 20.1 (1st)
Rebs - 7.3 (7th)
Steals - 1.4 (T4th)
Blocks - 1.1 (9th)
3fg Made - 57 (T2nd)
3fg% - 39.6% (10th)
FT Made - 95 (T1st)
FT % - 88% (1st)

God, soak up this kid as much as you can fans.
He truly is a unicorn - an underrecruited NYC kid who explodes as an SJU player.
Two stats that stand out: the fact that he's 2nd in 3FG Made and 1st in FT Made just shows how special this kid's game is.

I admit I am a complete Advocate for Julian to be the BE POY . His stats are off the charts .  But , he's not on the top 4 teams in the Conference and also a Soph . Some Coaches might not vote for him because he may have 2 more years . Which is a cop out in my opinion .  I would say Boughtnight might have been the POY but , he played so sparingly , does he deserve it ?  The Others ? Mamu ? Watson , Gillespie ? Dukes? Zagarowski? Robinson Earl ?  It's a tough call but , I still vote for Champ .

Justin Champagnie on how he and his twin brother Julian will approach decisions about their futures in the offseason

“We’re going to do it together, whatever we decide. He’s my twin brother. I need him by my side. It was tough for us to split apart in college and all of that.”

Think they'll lean heavily on Mom and Dad when deciding. At the moment,  my sense is that they'll both come back for one more year.

Well, the Pitt program is not in a good way with all the transfers they've had this season and with McGowens leaving last season. I could see Justin wanting to come home to a team on rise where his presence would solidly put us in the Top 25.

Or simply they want to end college careers in same year.

Absolutely Paultz, and  that's probably the situation. But, if either of them was going to leave to go play with the other I believe that Justin leaving to come here is much much more of a possibility than Julian going to Pitt. Especially, given the family's ties to the school and situation currently at Pitt. When three of your top kids transfer in a two year period there's an issue there somewhere.

If Justin's got a lot more $ to be had with getting drafted, and Julian ends up in g-league or overseas with a lot less $, I hope Julian looks at it from that end before trying to move in parallel just because.  Now, if Julian gets drafted, then that's great for him, and a tough loss for us but would help show staff truly gets players to next level here at SJU

That's what I got from it as well, however from watching those interviews those guys did together this year, it appears Justin just likes to take charge and feels like he's speaking for both of them even when it's not necessarily the case.  Justin was very vocal in saying him and Julian were a package deal out of high school and it clearly didn't end up that way.

My best guess is Justin will declare and stay in draft. Julian will declare, get feedback, then return for another year.  I don't see Justin sticking around Pitt, he's about maxed out what he can do there, he'll probably win ACC POY, and the biggest thing Pitt is a sinking ship.  They just lost 2 of their best players, and Jeff Capel without a doubt is going to be on the hot seat next year.

Making Plays, I've looked at least ten mock NBA drafts and Justin is only in the first round of one them. If he's not a guaranteed first round pick he should come back for another year. Of course, all this stuff is fluid.

Yea Justin is most defintely a 2nd round pick, I'm not sure if he'd be a first round pick if he returns next season, he played about as well as anyone can play in a really good ACC conference.  That's why I said he's maxed out what he could do there.  And he'd be returning to a worse team with a coach on the hot seat, so it's not the most ideal situation to return to, if you're a guy coming back to improve draft stock.

Julian on the other hand, is only a late 2nd round pick on like 1 mock site, most of the big sites don't even have them on their top 100 big board, so he can defintely improve his stock dramatically by returning and he has a chance to be on a really good team.  If all things go according to plan, Johnnies should be returning it's top 4 scorers, plus 8 of their 9 rotation players on a winning team.  Should start the year ranked if everyone returns.
