Welcome back Julian!

There is no backup plan to losing Julian.

He is an SJU unicorn - an underrecruited NYC player who became a star. When was the last time that happened?

I'm pretty pissed if I'm Garza and get a DNP. (Unless he's gotten a guarantee somewhere.)
I would assume Garza’s a top-15 pick at the very least so why even risk a possible injury this close to the draft. Or, lol, I’m totally wrong about that. Kinda surprising, I would think a guy his size who can score would be a higher pick.
Yeah, I think all the mocks I've seen have him in second round. Crazy how much the game has changed.

We definitely aren't finding a 20 ppg guy in the portal in late June.

The backup plan is Posh adding 5 ppg, Mathis and Wheeler getting to 10+ ppg, Soriano and Smith staying at 10+ ppg with the jump in level, and everyone defending their asses off.

With respect to LJSAs last post I agree with everything you said but I would like to add that Wusu also becomes a double digit scorer.

Garza was interviewed during the game --has a groin pull ---lost about 40 lbs  looks in great shape

What happened to the guard from Georgia Tech.  Does anything ever pan out

If Julian returns we may well land him.  Will be an interesting few weeks.  We are due to catch a few breaks.

There's a reason Garza stayed in school.  ESPN has him going 53.  NBA Draft.net keeps a consensus draft using multiple sources and in that he goes undrafted.  I found another guy with a more current consensus of the 1st round and Garza doesn't show up.    ESPN had 10 guys in the game in their mock, highest was Josh Primo at 35, the only guy in the top 40.  Other guys who seem borderline first round in that consensus are Greg Brown and Nah'Shon Hyland.

The guys going in the top 15 don't play in the 5 on 5s at the combine.  In fact if your pretty sure you are a first rounder you don't play.  Don't want to risk getting exposed.  Better to show your skills in a managed workout.  There's hours of tape of you playing 5 on 5 available to teams.

I have a good feeling about Julian returning. Not expecting to get the kid from Georgia Tech but you never know. If we get Julian and a combo guard who can be a legit BE rotation guy we will be just fine imho.

PS Garza should stay in school.  Only 10 guys have scored 3K points in their NCAA careers, Garza could become #5.  /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

PPS Still amazing that the all time leader, Pistol Pete, only played 3 years.  Everyone else in the club played 4, though the Big O came within 26 points.  /media/kunena/emoticons/whistling.png

PPPS If you take out mid major players and coach's sons there's no one who has scored 3K in their career.  /media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png

PPPPS The highest ranked player who plays for a team that is currently in the big 6 (AAC does not count) and did not have his father as a head or assistant coach is Tyler Hansborough.  /media/kunena/emoticons/sick.png  After that Redick, and then Markus Howard.  Manning and Houston also disqualified by the dad on staff rule.

I think he returns because there is more to gain from returning, perhaps significantly more.

As far as Garza, great college player.  And in the 80s or even early/mid 90s, maybe later, he ends up being a first round pick.  No more.  Now it is about projections to what the current NBA looks like.  Versatility to create off the bounce for yourself or others.  The ability to get your shot and/or shoot at a high level (and if you can't get your own shot consistently, you better project to shoot at a really high level and have some size).  Rim protectors. 3 and D guys.  Bigs that are athletic enough to guard the switch on the pick roll and make plays off the lob in the PNR structure on offense.  Garza was ions better as a college big than Kai Jones.  But Jones is going to get taken long before him because how NBA folks project his fit in the current league compared to Garza.  Dropping 40 pounds is Garza's attempt to mold himself into a versatile enough big that can stick.

He's doing post season work -- july 7 will be the deadline for all our answers

Rated #7 out of the G league combine:7. Jose AlvaradoThe 6-foot skilled point guard has kept his options open and could return to Georgia Tech for a fifth season. Alvarado demonstrated his ball-handling and passing prowess in both games while also showing off the ability to knock down jumpers on a consistent basis, particularly from deep off the dribble. He was also outstanding defensively as he “dogged” opposing point guards. He probably helped his draft stock, if he decides to remain in the NBA draft and is potential late-second-round draft choice.G-League Elite Camp stats: 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.0 turnover,  and 1.5 blocks. He was  6 of14 from the field (42.6%), 3 of 6 (50%) from the 3-point line, and 1 of 2 (50%) from the charity stripe.

Do they post the measureables from the combine.  Id love to see how julian stacks up with the other kids.

I dont think the scrimmage or the workout is going to push him up or down the board, I think the measurables will.

Ouch, near the bottom of most categories...not good for the kid but selfishly it might be good for us.  It might give Julian an extra year to work with the new strength & conditioning coach.

Julian Champagnie focuses on NBA draft combine as St. John’s decision looms

Interesting quote from that article
If the rising junior stays in the draft, he likely would be a mid-to-late second-round pick this year in what is a loaded draft, multiple scouts told The Post. At the next level, he will play on the wing, and needs to improve his athleticism, ball-handling and on-ball defense, the evaluators said.“What’s he going to lose by going back?” one of the scouts asked. “I don’t see how he has a bad season unless he just doesn’t make shots.”

As skilled as Alvarado is in shooting and playmaking , a 6 foot guard is not the prototype NBA guard.  Maybe the G League or Europe is his ultimate future . He appears to want to play more BB and maybe make some $$$ doing it . No harm in that . And , he graduated from GA Tech with a degree . He’s got a good education in his pocket .
