Welcome back Julian!

Source: St John’s star Julian Champagnie has received an invite to NBA Combine. He won’t be making a decision about his future before it. #sjubb. Deadline to stay in draft or return to school is July 7.

Told that Julian's twin brother Justin has also recieved an invite to combine. Justin Champagnie has signed with an agent and is not returning to school.

Congratulations to Julian and Justin. Interesting tidbit Julian Champagnie has made the latest mock draft as a second round pick while Justin has not.

If Julian leaves they’re going to have to bring in two more very good players to have any shot at really accomplishing anything significant this upcoming season

I don't know about you guys, but I've got Wusu penciled in to fill Julian's spot.
Julian has good opportunity at combine, but imo will be back at SJU. If he kills it there, good for him though.

Define "significant." Because even with Julian, I still think we need Alvarado to get to where I want to be.

I don't think it's an absolute certainty that we can't be good without Julian. Obviously makes it much harder, but not every program that loses a star sucks the next season. Several guys boost their production and a freshman gives you more than expected, and the ppg numbers are replaced. It's happened forever in college ball.

Here's the way I see it and all this is subject to change if incoming freshman overachieve or Wusu makes a huge jump from last year:

Scenario D - Julian leaves and rather than adding a difference maker combo guard we add a McGriff type kid - extremely lucky to make NIT;

Scenario C - Julian leaves and we add a combo guard as good or better than Stef Smith - we are  a bubble team;

Scenario B - Julian returns and we add a combo guard who is not a BE talent - we are a tourney team but a middle of the pack BIG East team;

Scenario A - Julian returns and we add a combo guard as good or better than Stef Smith - we are a top 4 BE team and a real threat to make week 2 of tourney.

But then again I thought Cole would be a real good piece for us so wtf do I know?

Significant for me as far as SJU basketball is concerned would be making the tournament and winning a game.Big East Tournament finals

Have the released how many people got combine invites yet?

I thought I had read somewhere that there will be around 100 invites, if so, doesn't seem surprising he would get an invite, he's for sure within the top 100.

NBA GMs are given a list of around 100 college players to vote on.  The top 60-70 vote getters receive invitations.

The first paragraph if this article, from last year, outlines the process. https://www.zagsblog.com/2020/07/27/nba-gms-receive-list-of-105-players-for-combine-invites-at-least-three-big-east-players-invited/]Zags 2020 Article

No need to try to fool ourselves. Without Julian, the upcoming season will be a real struggle. With Julian, we are still in need of a quality transfer to make some noise.  CMA's teams have overachieved so far, but I'm not so sure it will happen again if Julian decides to chase his dream.

I can only think of one player left on the market who could get close to matching the ppg void left by a departing Julian, but through a group effort I think we're built more to absorb the loss of Julian than the loss of Posh. I think we'd be way more screwed if Posh suddenly decided he wanted out.

It will be interesting to see how far his shooting progress,if it did not see his game last just about the same as last yr.If it really got a lot better then we have something

Our concerns are really paradoxical.   The short outlook is we lose our very best player to the NBA, and our 2021-2022 NCAA tourney outlook evaporates.   The long outlook is to draw top players to your school, it helps enormously to have guys who have made the pros.   To a very large extent, having Julian drafted and in the NBA helps our program in the long run more than it hurts.

Great kid, great leader, overall our best player in quite a while.   I'm rooting for him to do well in the combines and be playing for an NBA team next season.    If not, we get an all-Big East player back who may just be in the conversation for the Wooden award and the centerpiece of our NCAA hopes.   Can't lose proposition.

If Julian leaves this year to play in the Development League and through hard work and luck becomes a marginal NBA player it will not help recruiting at all.

Wishful thinking .... if true then having Harkless drafted 2012 at #15 in the first round of the NBA draft would have lead talented players to St. John's but did not.

The hard cold reality is that in the last 20 years St. John's had had only 2 players drafted in the NBA draft: Harkless and Dom Pointer in the second round in 2015 and neither draft pick helped St. John's recruiting  "enormously".

My advice to Julian is to do whatever he thinks is best for him and his future.  By all accounts he is a win, on and off the basketball court which reflects favorably upon his Mom & Dad.

Neither brother listed on the current update on the NBADraft.net mock draft, which was updated a few days ago. I don't believe either has been listed at any point this year

Obviously I'm hoping he returns (and still think he does), but will wish him the best no matter what decision he makes. He deserves it.

Food for thought yesterday on Instagram Julian posted a picture of him and Posh saying 'no one wants to see this duo'
