Wagner, Fri. Nov. 13, 6pm - FS1 & WMCA AM 570

Congrats to Coach Mullin on his first win! Never thought I'd enjoy a tight win over Wagner so much. Really nice improvement over the last couple of weeks.

I thought Mussini and Sima were really solid. Those guys are going to have a lot of responsibility as freshman. Especially Mussini being the only real ball handler. Really liked what I saw from Ellison too. He looks like the one guy who may be able to help Mussini out at times. When athletic teams press us we're going to really have our hands full...

Also, how much fun was it to see Mullin working the sideline? He was definitely amped. I couldn't believe how far onto the court he got a few times during gameplay. It was great to see.

One game at a time. Even if they didn't always finish, I liked seeing a team read the changing defense and instantly recognizing the thing to do. Been a while...

Congrats to Mullin and the staff and all the players on their first W. Looking forward to more firsts. First road win and first conference win. (First Trip Double by Sima... ;) )

I'm trying not to comment on last night's atrocities in Paris, but I will. Anyone who still believes that Putin's declaration of war against Isis is a sign of his own weakness, and our "leadership on environmental issues" is a sign of our leader's strength is completely out of their minds. The quote is real, and I am angered beyond belief. Isis operating under the guise of radical Islam, is purely evil, and will not go away by appeasement or by ignoring them. We need a resolve, a stomach, and the might of our military to destroy them. Maybe now Europeans and Americans will wake up to the fact that withdrawal from the Middle East is not the answer, nor is negotiating with a country that sponsors terror. We woke up yesterday morning to a leadership crowing that taking out Jihadi John was proof that "we have contained Isis" and "are slowly chipping away". Today we wake up to the worst terror attack since 9-11, with more promised on American soil. Not only do we have to wake up, America, but we need to ignore words from our leaders designed to lull us back to sleep and remain relatively benign in the war against terror. The French have been particularly vocal against Americans taking the fight against terror to the Middle East. I'd bet that is not the sentiment this morning. While they rush to secure their borders, as if preventing a few terrorists from escaping will provide a solution, the reality is that there are hundreds if not thousands of Islamic extremists living within their borders and ours deep into planning and executing further attacks.

No this doesn't belong in this thread, but the lack of clarity, leadership, and resolve coming from Washington in exerting the full might of America against a foe whose thirst for innocent blood will not be quenched by anything but their own destruction.

Some observations from last night's game, as much of a distraction from the realities of the world that predominate our thoughts:

1) Mullin is minute by minute learning how to be a coach. During timeouts it was Mullin with the clipboard, not St. Jean, although it seems that everyone on the bench has a clipboard. Players must be trained during play and breaks in the action (not just timeouts) to listen to Mullin as he calls out to them. He is growing into a presence, but there is work to be done there. Unlike criticism leveled by some on here, last night it was clear that he is intent on asserting control from the bench.

2) I don't recall Mullin the player ever coming close to a T. Mullin the coach jaws a lot at refs, and is bound to get T'd sooner or later. The thing in his favor is that Mullin the player is iconic to many fans, and refs will tolerate a little more from him right now than just another guy. It is good to see a passionate, emotional Mullin on the bench - the fire on the outside - than the relatively quiet, smiley kid whose play belied that outward demeanor.

3) This team is weak, as evidenced by a win essentially eked out against a bad team. But there is some talent. Mussini does not have the ball handling skills to be a Big East point and that I fear will be exposed soon enough. But unlike the Hoop(st)er who Max'd out against inferior competition, Mussini's jumper is real, and he only needs a small amount of space and has a very quick trigger to launch a silky jumper. He is finding that taking the ball to the hole in D1, even against Wagner, will find him on his butt with no call way too often. But he is a real player I believe and will be serviceable.

4) Durand Johnson can play, and won't be rattled by Big East competition. He may have shot 2-10, but coolly put some nails in the coffin with some late free throws. His age and experience will be assets going forward.

5) Sima looked good against a weak Wagner team. The comparisons to CO will be obvious, and I'm not sure how much of a presence he will be when the competition gets radically better. I suspect it wont be pretty, but I do think the potential is there.

6) Mvouika at the other guard is not the answer to bring the ball up. He can play some, but especially when it comes to breaking a good press, this team will be in trouble. I like him as a player.

7) GREAT crowd for a Friday at 6 PM. When you give in to TV schedules, you are basically screwing most paying fans, who fought rush hour traffic to do a pretty damned good job of filling CA. GREAT job by the students, who showed up in remarkable force considering the lowered expectations of this squad. Students were loud, and all in all our fans were somewhat animated.

8) Beautiful, I mean BEAUTIFUL end of game moment when Mullin quickly returned from the locker room to climb into the stands to chat with Coach Lou, who gave him a kiss on the cheek. I was right above them in the walkway behind the Utopia basket and caught a few nice cell photos. It's clear that this is a special job for Chris, and while he has to grow into the role of coach, Carnesecca Arena already fits him like a glove. It's only a matter of time before he owns the place, or demonstrates that he really always has owned a piece.

But just yesterday morning our "president" told us that ISIS has been contained....so you are obviously overreacting (sarcasm beast I am not starting a fight with you, I agree with your post 100%)

Also keep Ron M'Vouika in your prayers, as he is from Paris and probably has a lot of family there.

Just " talking out loud" here...Knowing the values of the St.Johns community ( posters included) the staff and teammates are likely right there with him and any family concerns. The game pales in comparison to reality, of course, but it is and was a healthy diversion. Whatever works to soothe the pain and heal the wounds - of course that won't happen without the grace and intervention of Mother/Father Time.

all the best.

As with our own Revolutionary War, Vietnam and other conflicts, very difficult to contain an amorphous, " unstructured", piecemeal, unpredictable enemy. The big organized guys are at a disadvantage.

Good to see you back and posting again. Hope you've been well.

Enjoyed the game & seeing Sima, Mussini & the "scrappy 8" give it a go v limited opposition. Also liked the energy & focus of Mullin & staff. That said, a major liability is absence of a PG. Mussini handles task ok, but having to do so detracts from his true SG role. Ron M'V is not the answer there, nor is Ellison IMO. In any event, you have to play the hand you are dealt. Will still enjoy a challenging year one in the rebuilding process. Go Johnnies!

Enjoyed last night's game and (believe it or not) I am looking forward to this season. Essentially I have no expectations and I am enthusiastic about watching these kids come together and develop.

I do hope we can install something to help Mussini rest and/or get off the ball. Perhaps Holyfield can give us 4-5 minutes per game. If he could play serviceable defense and keep turnovers to a minimum, Mussini could catch a short breath.

Overall, the team played not good but....... hard, smart and together. It was a smarter product than what we got with a Lavin coached team.

Mullin actually got a bench warning for straying too far onto the court
Several times he looked into the stands and smiled
Looked like he was really enjoying himself out there - great to see!!

Agree with your assessment Beast, however do not underestimate Mussini. The kid is getting his first real taste of the American game. He will learn, he will gain some weight and he will get stronger. Maybe he will even grow a little. His ball handling skills will improve. The kid has great instincts and I suspect he will work hard, under the staff''s tutelage, and make himself in to a very good Big East ballplayer over time. Exciting times ahead!

Also, while not great I thought Jones had a nice game. Wish they would have dumped the ball down low to Sima a bit more he seems to have some offensive potential.
The 30 second shot clock will make a big difference in trying to run any half court offense. With Wagner pressing it seemed the time went very fast on the offensive end. one other note, i feel we are a painfully slow team. A few times we had the chance for some breaks and just couldn't get down the court.
All in all the future could be bright.

Yes it is a whole diff game when Mussini plays the off guard. If Lovett was eligible we could win many more games as long as our rebounding and turn overs keep improving. But overall I like our progress, our energy and team play. Whatever happens it is going to be an enjoyable venture this yr. Hope the negativity on coach and staff is held to a bare minimum

Enjoyed all the updates and commentary. Thanks for all of the pics and articles.

Beast thanks for the post keeping things real. Praying for everyone in France. I don't feel like waxing political this morning because I am in a great mood (got the house to myself today...I see a movie marathon and wings in my future) so I will leave the topics of political incompetence and chicanery for another day.

Was great to see the commentary by the Wagner coach about how impressed he was with our defense. I realize it was Wagner but laurels like that after the first game add a positive air to the program.

Grats CM and company. Really sad I couldn't make the trip but stoked that we got off to this new era on the right foot.

Well said and couldn't agree more. Last night was great in that we played better than I expected and got a win, but at the same time a bit tantalizing because you saw the potential and the need is a playmaking PG. Not that it would be a difference of 10 wins, but season a lot more interesting and exciting with Lovett, probably no player we could afford to lose less.

Mussini was admirable last night and was really impressed by him but he will be burnt out by early January playing like that 2 games per week. High motor but nobody can be the only guy in any one role, same thing happened to Gift as the only big in 11-12.

Answer may be Durand when he's playing SF. Not from a playmaking perspective, but has good ball protection and is unlikely to get pressure he can't handle from opposing forwards. He can do enough in that spot to get the ball over half court and initiate the offense such that Mussini can play off the ball for periods. Don't know that Ron M. or Ellison as well positioned to do the same right now against pressure from opposing guards.

Power failure with about four minutes left and us up by 3. French President Hollande described his country as in a state of war. Vive la France.

La Marseillaise

French lyrics

Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes ,
Mugir ces féroces soldats ? bras
Égorger nos fils, nos compagnes !

Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons !
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons ! (bis)

I recently saw a documentary on the end of WWII on the Western front that included interviews with GIs that had served on the front lines as the Wehrmacht was collapsing. They described coming under merciless fire from units of what proved to be teenagers who were fighting until they were out of ammunition. When the GIs realized that these were units of Hitler youth who only knew how to be Nazis, they annihilated all they could. One suspects that ISIS volunteers my be in the same category and subject to the same fate.
