Wagner, Fri. Nov. 13, 6pm - FS1 & WMCA AM 570

All my observations from the game have already been posted for the most part. But one thing I don't see written that I saw, was that Mullin and LoVett seemed to be pretty close on the sidelines. They were talking and laughing all game, I believe Marcus was one of the first to hug him after he got his first win as a coach.

I like to see that because, when these guys get declared ineligible to play, you never know what could happen. They may want to go home, transfer, you just never know.

1 game into his tenure and already a great play call by Mullin late in the game. Raftery was impressed he was smart enough to put Mussini off the ball and spotted up in the corner during that big possession, it worked perfectly.

Also one more thing I want to say is I was impressed with Mussini last night. People have gotten on him of late and I don't get it. Yea he will struggle. But when LoVett and Ponds come in to feed him the ball next year, he will be dropping 3s, and the experience he will get this year from taking the ball up will make him a complete package 2 guard the next couple of years who can handle way better than the average 2 guard.

Overall it will be easy rooting for this team. After the STAC game, they know no win will come easy, so it was fun to see them play with so much enthusiasm and heart.

Mussini was phenomenal, completely different player than the Sonoma game. Made a few huge shots and showed a basketball IQ that we haven't seen around these parts for quite some time. Might be overwhelmed at the point this year, but much like Phil Greene his freshman year, the experience running the point will prove to be very valuable down the road.

Durand and M'Vouika were both steady presences, I thought M'Vouika was going to be more wild in his shot selection, but he actually had a few looks where he should have pulled the trigger and didn't.

Christian is showing more agressiveness which is nice but he's just not a rebounder and never will be. Can be a weapon when he gets the ball on the elbow though.

Sima is going to be a first round pick. Great defensive maturity so far and he has post moves that we haven't seen since Burrell. Also made a jump shot on the baseline.

Williams has a nice stroke and will be a weapon for us. He clearly is a little rusty out there but having a guy at his size who can stretch a defense will be key for us.

Crowd showed up for the most part which was nice to see, although it was hot as ever in the Carn as expected. Fun night.

Despite the fact that we will have a bad record this year. I feel we have a nice core.Next year w have Yawke, Lovett and Owens coming w a year of practice under their belt.plus other recruits and Ponds. Everyone will be more experienced and stronger and some will grow in height. Although Mullin only has 1 game of coaching under his belt, I feel w time he will develop into a great coach. Staff and players seem to get along well w each other and is hard working ,striving to improve and have a good attitude. I enjoyed last night . The future looks good.AIso I think Sima will be a real force next year and as mentioned Mussini will be able to play off the ball.

Congrats to Coach Mullin on his first win! Never thought I'd enjoy a tight win over Wagner so much. Really nice improvement over the last couple of weeks.

I thought Mussini and Sima were really solid. Those guys are going to have a lot of responsibility as freshman. Especially Mussini being the only real ball handler. Really liked what I saw from Ellison too. He looks like the one guy who may be able to help Mussini out at times. When athletic teams press us we're going to really have our hands full...

Also, how much fun was it to see Mullin working the sideline? He was definitely amped. I couldn't believe how far onto the court he got a few times during gameplay. It was great to see.

Mullin actually got a bench warning for straying too far onto the court
Several times he looked into the stands and smiled
Looked like he was really enjoying himself out there - great to see!!

That's funny, I didn't know that he got a warning. Totally makes sense though! I saw the refs turn to him a couple of times while the ball was in play and thought that might be it, but Mullin seemed pretty chatty so I figured it could have been anything. I really loved his in-game energy. I'm weirdly looking forward to him getting his first tech.

What stands out to me is that for the first time in the last 6+ years we ran real sets, played in control and looked like a real program. Granted the talent and execution isn't there yet but it will be soon enough. This game was so refreshing after 5 years of Lavin!

Agree with everything you said, especially about Mussini. I particularly liked the way he fought hard to get open. He took a little bit of a beating doing that and I can only imagine the bruises he'll have after Big East play starts.

And yes, it was incredibly hot in CA. And why don't they allow us to exit using the rear doors? I remember doing that a few times and it was so convenient, especially after a packed house exits all at once.

A more likely scenario is Lovett feeding Ponds and Mussini the ball. Ponds as of now is not a PG, in spite of how much many on here want to make him one.

The year begins in France with Charlie Hebdo and ends with this genocidal attack. The French are faced with a nightmarish future. How will they react to this?

Their tradition is national resolve followed by inept military leadership followed by GIs saving their buns followed by inane pomposity that they won the war and demands for moronic economic compensation that assures future wars.

A little tough on Lavin and I'm no Lavin lover. But appreciate the wit. I also agree w you regarding Mullin. Someone who has 40 years of elite success in BB. Also a hard worker and will never stop improving. Just have to root for him. That's why I'm a fan. Didn't go to SJU , but started watching college BB in the early 80s and the Mullin era got me hooked.

I'm trying not to comment on last night's atrocities in Paris, but I will. Anyone who still believes that Putin's declaration of war against Isis is a sign of his own weakness, and our "leadership on environmental issues" is a sign of our leader's strength is completely out of their minds. The quote is real, and I am angered beyond belief. Isis operating under the guise of radical Islam, is purely evil, and will not go away by appeasement or by ignoring them. We need a resolve, a stomach, and the might of our military to destroy them. Maybe now Europeans and Americans will wake up to the fact that withdrawal from the Middle East is not the answer, nor is negotiating with a country that sponsors terror. We woke up yesterday morning to a leadership crowing that taking out Jihadi John was proof that "we have contained Isis" and "are slowly chipping away". Today we wake up to the worst terror attack since 9-11, with more promised on American soil. Not only do we have to wake up, America, but we need to ignore words from our leaders designed to lull us back to sleep and remain relatively benign in the war against terror. The French have been particularly vocal against Americans taking the fight against terror to the Middle East. I'd bet that is not the sentiment this morning. While they rush to secure their borders, as if preventing a few terrorists from escaping will provide a solution, the reality is that there are hundreds if not thousands of Islamic extremists living within their borders and ours deep into planning and executing further attacks.

No this doesn't belong in this thread, but the lack of clarity, leadership, and resolve coming from Washington in exerting the full might of America against a foe whose thirst for innocent blood will not be quenched by anything but their own destruction.

But just yesterday morning our "president" told us that ISIS has been contained....so you are obviously overreacting (sarcasm beast I am not starting a fight with you, I agree with your post 100%)

As with our own Revolutionary War, Vietnam and other conflicts, very difficult to contain an amorphous, " unstructured", piecemeal, unpredictable enemy. The big organized guys are at a disadvantage.

It's a lot more difficult if you choose to not fight them

I thought he took it too easy on Lavin.

But I wish the French the best...because we are all in this together.

Enjoyed the game & seeing Sima, Mussini & the "scrappy 8" give it a go v limited opposition. Also liked the energy & focus of Mullin & staff. That said, a major liability is absence of a PG. Mussini handles task ok, but having to do so detracts from his true SG role. Ron M'V is not the answer there, nor is Ellison IMO. In any event, you have to play the hand you are dealt. Will still enjoy a challenging year one in the rebuilding process. Go Johnnies!

Well said and couldn't agree more. Last night was great in that we played better than I expected and got a win, but at the same time a bit tantalizing because you saw the potential and the need is a playmaking PG. Not that it would be a difference of 10 wins, but season a lot more interesting and exciting with Lovett, probably no player we could afford to lose less.

Mussini was admirable last night and was really impressed by him but he will be burnt out by early January playing like that 2 games per week. High motor but nobody can be the only guy in any one role, same thing happened to Gift as the only big in 11-12.

Answer may be Durand when he's playing SF. Not from a playmaking perspective, but has good ball protection and is unlikely to get pressure he can't handle from opposing forwards. He can do enough in that spot to get the ball over half court and initiate the offense such that Mussini can play off the ball for periods. Don't know that Ron M. or Ellison as well positioned to do the same right now against pressure from opposing guards.
like what I see from the young kids...not so much from the vets...I hope Johnson is shaking off rust becuase rigt now he is not impressive...By the way, I don't think he has a good handle...So dont see him taking pressure off Mussini...gong to have to force feed Ellison...

Spot on re: Mussini...he is manning the point as best he can under constant pressure and shows a lot of moxie for a freshman..unafraid to take shots

Anyone know why one side of the stands looked packed and the teams side with some empty seats?

Because a lot of the big-time donors who have the chair back seats choose not to attend the early season non-conference games.
