Villanova (MSG), Sat., Jan. 11 , 7p, CBSSN

I thought the double tech call was ridiculous. Just walk in btwn the 2 guys, split them up and move on. This is basketball not a knitting class. A little jawing back and forth is good for the game.

That might have been the weakest double tech ive ever seen.

Bad behavior:

Because of circumstances was not in my usual seats with mostly season ticket holders.

My seats were surrounded by 30 something sju grads - which was absolutely great to see. The behavior for the most partnwas appalling. They were nearly all shit faced, and I've learned enough over timebnot to try to correct a loud drunk at sport venues. Three guys decided to stand up when there was no reason to stand, sometimes just to chat, one girl spent the whole game standing and chatting with a girl in the row behind her even when the gsme heated up, one guy kept shouting profanity laced obscenities mostly graphically sexual. Late in the game one drunk sju grad spotted my daughter's Villanova cap (she wasnt even cheering outwardly for Nova) and just leaned over and said "You're Nova. FUCK YOU". I can handle most drunks, so after telling him that wasn't nice, pulled him close and said, "She's been rooting for St Johns since you were in kindergarden". He then apologized and said, "I just meant Villanova, not you" She said "Really? You said fuck you" From that point on was my buddy, drunk hugging me all game. Turns out he's an attorney.

I'm amazed at the total lack of civility in general. With an older fan base there were plenty of 60-80 year olds standing on the train. One Villanova alum douchebag rushed onto the train when the doors opened and saved an entire 2 rows of 5 seats for his wife and kids ages approx 12-15. Douchebag. I hesitated about 4 times to say anything. Snazzy dresser tho. Dick
I had an experience like that at one of our games last season and it was highly distasteful. I enjoy some intelligent banter among fans during the game, but drunk, rude people acting out socially inappropriately during the games ruins the experience of going to a live event.

People like the two morons who assaulted Mookie Betts during last year's World Series represent a societal problem where people feel they are entitled to do anything and get away with it. Alcohol does not help, but there also needs to be a fundamental lack of manners and social skills in place to act that way in a public place. If people can't act civilly they need to stay at home and act like asses in their own home and not subject the rest of us to their nonsense.

That is Carl on the left. 😎

Carl Banks G111 puts out such great and quality merchandise . Sure it’s pricey but, looks good .,
The guy on the right ? Is that the Whopper ( Paultzman)? He looks snazzy too , in his Johnny Sweatshirt .

Was that photo, before or after the game ?

18,168. Fantastic crowd.

Longino hit 2 buzzer beating daggers which were a really bad omen.

Villanova went cold from 3 but give credit to our guys. They rotated well and were relentless on the boards.

Note to new fans. When you are up by 9 win one minute to go, the victory chant is "We are... St. JOHN'S " not "Let’s go Johnnies"
SJU85 and you must be communicating via brain waves because he said the same thing about chanting “we are St. John’s…”

So many great guys in our fan base. To a man, nearly all awesome people. Even when I have these infrequent online arguments with Monte, I see him in person, he flashes that Hollywood smile, and says "What? You're not going to hug me?"

I saw SJUDave on the way in.. no that wasn't LT with Banks, it was Dave. Great chat. Then I saw Ralph from 114 on the way back home. He went to grade school and hs with my brother-in-law and never fails to ask about him or my wife. Great guys.

Yep, we ARE St. Johns. And I'm very proud and happy about that.

A couple of random thoughts, which at this point are all that is left because we have thoroughly discussed and dissected this wonderful win.

1. My son came with me. He goes to Cooper Union so by default he roots for SJU because he doesn’t have a team to root for, and he is embarrassed watching his father mope around the house after an SJU loss. But even he was into the game more than I have ever seen before. Almost like a student.

2. I loved when Pitino acknowledged the fans after the game by standing and clapping. He finally saw a glimpse of what may be the start of something big.
I was very lucky to meet you and a son of your’s years ago in 114. If this is same son you just referenced, he was a very nice young man. By chance is he an engineering student at Cooper Union? If so, could he check CA air conditioning system at CA, or better still design a new campus arena? 😇

Most techs called today wouldn’t even be considered regular fouls in the 90s.
The thing about double techs are WTF are you going to do when a guy shoves you, or says something really offensive and over the line. Just T both up, count them as team fouls but not personal fouls,,and auto eject on the slightest reoccurrence, and dont shoot fts.

Man I love sju bball so much that when we win a big one, before i even leave the arena can't wait till the next game.

I watched , what seemed like a eternity , the last 4 minutes and 37 seconds of the SH - PC game on CBS Sports .
It seemed to take a 1/2 hour to finish . Useless fouls by both teams , that in no way could have altered the outcome
As a result , missed the first 6 minutes of our game .
As a aside , on the final seconds, we fouled too , again when the game was already decided . Do these Coaches, on both teams , instruct the players to not foul?
No point to it ,
I thought the few minutes that Vince and Prey gave in the 1st half to harass Dixon was masterful Coaching by Pitino

Later on putting Scott on him for most of the 2 nd half did affect him and his shooting .
I think he was like 6-20 or close to that .
Is he a NBA player ? Not in my opinion .
He had 2 rebounds last night , to go with his 1 rebound agains UCONN . And , he can be exploited defensively .
Is he a very good player and very heady ? Yes !

The Smith injury will hurt us for as long as he is unable to play at his usual skill level .

And , it appears. Dunlap might not make it beck this season ? In addition to the hand , he’s got a groin pull too . May need surgery .

Beast’s comments and others about the excessive Alcohol consumption and resultant bad behavior are all too common .
Sporting Events , tend to give some people license to over indulge . Either in tail gating or pre game Receptions or just Bar hopping .
The result ? The boorish and terrible actions of people who have been over served
It isn’t just our fans who do this but , it’s become a far too frequent occurrence at many games.
Nobody cares if some Impaired person goes to the game but , when it affects and insults other fans who are trying to enjoy the game , something should be done .
What is that ? Well , if the behavior is intolerable , the Security staff and Garden Mgt needs to be notified and the offenders removed . Leaving them only with a warning is a 1/2 measure and puts those offended in jeopardy for the rest of the game .

Beast , often times , it’s not only you or your guests who are offended but , other nearby fans too. Get their cooperation to alert Security .

If you , or the others with you are kept from enjoying a game you paid a lot to go to , you have every right to complain ,

On other matters , G ‘town isn’t going to be a walkover . The Kid , Sorber , is a inside load to handle .
Anytime we beat Villanova , it’s a good night .

Breeding sets a tone with his fellow, less experienced refs, a “I will control the game” attiitude. Mug made funny and accurate comment about his love affair for the monitor. I too don’t gripe about officiating often, but this guy is the god of disrupting the flow of a beautiful game to feed his ego. Saw this on line about Breeding;

“A basketball referee who was selected to officiate the 2019 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Final Four. He was involved in a controversial Big East tournament semifinal game where Seton Hall beat Marquette 81–79. The game was marked by nine technical fouls, 49 total fouls, 85 free throws, three ejections, and four foul-outs.”

I think Stevie Wonder must evaluate his performance.
Breeding is a consistent disaster. It’s easy to think he has it in for SJU, but the reality is he cannot do his job. Every fan base in the Big East has a problem with him.

I was going to mention this same thing. The past decade society has normalized this type of poor behavior even outside of sporting events. It should come as no surprise why.
Im not excusing the behavior at all (and I won't be hypocritical - cause I prob haven't been a choir boy at every game in my life) -... but getting drunk at Sports games isn't something new is it? I sat in front of the Student section- and other than a few curses, they were fine (I'm more attentive to that stuff now with a 6yr old in tow). For 18k+... what do we think... maybe around 100 "rude" fans? half a percent?

Look... this was a College game, with a good number of 18-30 ish yr olds... on a Saturday Night... in NYC... This type of event is treated as a "pre-game" for that age group before they hit the bars/clubs...

A 7pm Saturday night MSG game will never be a 12 noon Mass.... be prepared.

If there were only 100 then one third were near me.

I don't mind one too many. But some 21-34 year olds come to games to get completely sloppy drunk and dont care how much they bother those around them.

I also don't mind mildly drunk people having fun. Whether sju or met games made many 9 inning orv40 minute friends high fiving or cheering or chatting w strangers.

What a 30 year old thinks is funny about saying loudly in mixed company that he's going to "rub one out" or any other crude annoying shit is beyond me. Cheer. Get drunk . Have fun. Don't annoy others. If you fall on the tracks on the way home just don't fuck up my train sched.

That is him, thanks, because I also have a daughter in high school.

And yes, he is a civil engineering major at Cooper. I will bring this fascinating thought up with him because if he can one day solve this longstanding problem, he may have a petition to have the air conditioning system named after him.

And MJMaher will buy him food and drinks forever.

I usually wait until 30 seconds to start “We Are.. St John’s..” in the student section. That’s always been how the Student section has done it in my 3 years at St. John’s.

Regarding rude and obnoxious fans, I've definitely found that to be the case at sports games in recent years, whereas prior to that it was a lot less prevalent. The last non-SJU game I went to was Braves @ Mets and the row in front of me was screaming profanities the whole game. At one point a guy turned around and apologized since he saw I had a toddler, and to his credit he stopped, but the rest of them continued cursing. Granted she's too young to repeat words easily so I didn't really care, but it's still embarrassing for them.

Society has regressed in a lot of ways over the past decade, in large part I think due to how people yell at strangers over social media now. Empathy and social norms are a lot less common than they once were. That's not even to mention other issues with sports, like gambling on every play becoming an addiction for many.

All that aside I was very impressed with the crowd. It wasn't a sellout and we did sell this game out sometimes in the past, such as in 2019, but the massive difference is this may be the first time I've seen a game where St. John's fans greatly outnumbered Nova fans (I've been a fan since 2012). During the 2019 sellout I was surrounded by Nova fans. They were ranked #13 and coming off a Title year, so it's understandable why they showed up in huge numbers during the Wright years.

Given the big majority of fans this year were Johnnies, this was the most impressed I've been with fan support (despite it not technically being a sellout). Would love to see the UConn game, a guaranteed sellout, be less of a split than last year. We have the support to make that happen.
