Villanova (MSG), Sat., Jan. 11 , 7p, CBSSN

One rule question. When a pass to Dixon went between his legs and into the backcourt late in the game, he touched it first when he dove for the ball with Luis. Shouldn't the refs have called a backcourt violation at that point? We ended up with the ball on the possession arrow, but it should not have come to that. Plus, since it was within the last 2 minutes, could the refs have gone to the monitor to review it?
We probably would still be waiting for the ruling. 😎

Provided it wasn’t tipped which I don’t believe it was, yes.

A couple of other observations from watching the game.

The refs were definitely inconsistent and we seemed to get the worse of it. I mean Dixon was allowed to bully his way into the lane, push off etc and was not called on many of those. And then they called some ticky taxk ones on us.

Liked Ricks use of Prey and Vince and hopefully that remains when Glover and smith and if he does this year Dunlap return. The longer bench will serve us well later on.

The difference in making some 3 point shots is huge and hopefully continues.

Stout and all of 33rd Street were packed. The 1870 event in stout was very well attended with the lure of a nice shirt giveaway
Red white pregames have been moved to Stout. St. John's actually loses money on the r-w pregames at the Garden - MSG charges a hefty price, and sju underwrote some of it.

I was gonna sit this one out but yes all RJ had to do was wait for Dixon to pick up the ball and it would have been a backcourt and our ball. Chasing the ball was not the smart move there because he could either touch it first and Dixon recovers or pick up a foul or whatever.

But you can't fault the effort and his back was to the pass so he had no way of knowing it wasn't deflected before it got to Dixon. Someone should have hollered at him to let it go.

Bad behavior:

Because of circumstances was not in my usual seats with mostly season ticket holders.

My seats were surrounded by 30 something sju grads - which was absolutely great to see. The behavior for the most partnwas appalling. They were nearly all shit faced, and I've learned enough over timebnot to try to correct a loud drunk at sport venues. Three guys decided to stand up when there was no reason to stand, sometimes just to chat, one girl spent the whole game standing and chatting with a girl in the row behind her even when the gsme heated up, one guy kept shouting profanity laced obscenities mostly graphically sexual. Late in the game one drunk sju grad spotted my daughter's Villanova cap (she wasnt even cheering outwardly for Nova) and just leaned over and said "You're Nova. FUCK YOU". I can handle most drunks, so after telling him that wasn't nice, pulled him close and said, "She's been rooting for St Johns since you were in kindergarden". He then apologized and said, "I just meant Villanova, not you" She said "Really? You said fuck you" From that point on was my buddy, drunk hugging me all game. Turns out he's an attorney.

I'm amazed at the total lack of civility in general. With an older fan base there were plenty of 60-80 year olds standing on the train. One Villanova alum douchebag rushed onto the train when the doors opened and saved an entire 2 rows of 5 seats for his wife and kids ages approx 12-15. Douchebag. I hesitated about 4 times to say anything. Snazzy dresser tho. Dick
Totally agree with you. We have some bad fans just like any other program. I try to represent the program well whenever I watch the team on the road. Met some great Providence folks when I went on Dec 20th, and I'm sure they thought I was a great representative for SJU. I will do the same on Saturday in Newark, though I'm not sure there will be as many fans lol. It's just sports, and I think people forget that.

It took (only) 1 1/2 seasons but last night reached one of the goals Rick Pitino promised when he took over: MSG packed with Johnny fans watching a (very?) good St. Johns team successfully battling a red hot team from an elite program. The city was ours for a night, maybe our debutant's ball. Sustain this through March and we will once again become the team nearly all NYC's basketball fans root for.

This team is by all means a Queens team, regardless of where our kids are from. Work hard for everything you get. Play defense relentlessly. Play for the name on the front of your jersey. Win and advance.

Its a reflection of society as a whole. Why would a small subset attending a basketball game be any different? (and then you add alcohol)

A couple of random thoughts, which at this point are all that is left because we have thoroughly discussed and dissected this wonderful win.

1. My son came with me. He goes to Cooper Union so by default he roots for SJU because he doesn’t have a team to root for, and he is embarrassed watching his father mope around the house after an SJU loss. But even he was into the game more than I have ever seen before. Almost like a student.

2. I loved when Pitino acknowledged the fans after the game by standing and clapping. He finally saw a glimpse of what may be the start of something big.

I gotta say that Nova is much better than we thought

The guys were exhausted at the end of the game so the defensive effort suffered a bit which is understandable. RJ could hardly stand

80% of the game was played at novas pace and we won. Why? Effort and toughness. We beat them in the half court bc we were tougher and played harder. Neptune made it clear to them during the breaks

Garden was rocking. Great job by all. Great win!

18,168. Fantastic crowd.

Longino hit 2 buzzer beating daggers which were a really bad omen.

Villanova went cold from 3 but give credit to our guys. They rotated well and were relentless on the boards.

Note to new fans. When you are up by 9 win one minute to go, the victory chant is "We are... St. JOHN'S " not "Let’s go Johnnies"
