A few likely unpopular comments about RJ: to paraphrase the immortal words of Dennis Green, he is who we thought he was. Enormously physically talented, not especially enamored of sharing the basketball, capable of scoring and offensive rebounding as he did tonight, also capable of at least a couple of brain lock moments every game.

The most interesting thing to me tonight was that he got absolutely cooked by Wooga Poplar in the second half. I do not think that Poplar is that much more talented that he can repeatedly blow by RJ, and RJ is usually a pretty good defender.

It feels like Nova found something in the scouting report about RJ's defense that they were able to capitalize on. SJU staff needs to figure that one out.
You’re right very unpopular. LUUS WON THE GAME ON THE BOARDS…. What a fantastic effort.

I can’t tell if this is a serious post or sarcasm. Are we slotting Ayo in as the starting two guard next year as well?
Marillac doesn't f around! He's deadly serious like the bubonic plague. Ayo will be Pitino's utility man. The starting two guard will be a big$ NIL guy.
😉🥳

This was such a fun/stressful game to go to. Some of my thoughts/observations:

-- RJ Luis really did take over this game. It was incredible to see him actually put it all together. His motor was out of this world. So impressive. Him diving on the ball for that loose ball was the favorite play of the game. Him with his size/athleticism/skillset hustling like that is something else.
-- Deivon is a warrior. He was in a ton of pain when he fell. He was talking to the trainer the entire half, and you can tell he wanted to come in. He didn't look himself, and I'm relieved he did not make it worse. I am no medical expert, at all, but I'm telling myself he's not playing next week. Survive Georgetown/Seton Hall, and get him ready for Xavier on the 22nd. We'll need him for McKnight.
-- Kadary came up big in the second half when he was inserted in. Just like his three deflections in a row in the first half, he changed the tone for the team the last six minutes. I do think this game shows RJ is the closer for this team. But maybe Kadary is a very good set up man. When he hit his second free throw, he looked really relieved. He definitely cares.
-- Whole team had a sense of relief about them when the three point shots started to fall. I really just think they have to hit 30%+ to win most games.
-- Dunlap was really active on the bench and out of huddles. Great to see. Pumped up Scott once, and also Wilcher.
-- I'm with Marillac on Prey. I think he's going to be really good next year. I thought he'd be an interesting match-up for Dixon and he did a great job. He can switch 1-5. Let the game slow down for him a little bit and he'll be a stud next year...
-- With Smith and Dunlap's injury, the carpet is rolled out for Wilcher and Glover to breakout. I still think Wilcher is hesitating too much on offense, and gets a little over-heated at times. Also do not like his off ball defense.

-- Defensively, did a great job tiring Dixon. Amazing that we had three more than capable guys to guard him. This is a game NBA scouts will watch when deciding to not draft him. He's got to get stronger. We do have to get better at making rotations on three point shots. We're lucky they missed some.
-- That said, our best defense against him was Brickus. From the 4 minute mark onwards, Dixon only took one shot. That is inexcusable.

-- Erick Barkley was in the section over from me tonight. I think I was the only one who recognized him.
-- I'd say crowd was 65-ish STJ - 35 Nova. But it was a great atmosphere.

In the friends and family room after the game Rick spoke of how proud he was seeing the restoration of the program. He said when he arrived, there was "no film room, no weight room, no refueling room". He is so proud of his guys. The game plan was to keep Dixon to a low percentage, and they did that. Said Deivon will likely miss Georgetown, but nothing more. His one question was, "Where's the bar?" He certainly deserved to celebrate tonight.
