Villanova (MSG), Fri., Jan. 20, 7p, FS-1

Funny, we had those three big contributors plus Soriano-granted he wasn't the Soriano of this year-and still we couldn't even make the NIT. Something rotten in Denmark.
Therein lies the truth. Even when we do have skilled position players, what good are they if they are not put in a position to succeed. A record barely over .500 and watching on selection Sunday wishing they were part of it.

if that is the play on which he was called for 3 seconds, it very well may have been, but ref can’t call that w/o having called it multiple times against Dixon and, in particular, on one of the final possessions of the game.
Following up on my comment…I rewatched the 3 second call on Wusu which was 4 Thousand and then the non-call on Dixon at the $:40ish mark…6 Thousand (he probably had 5 others)…not an excuse for our loss but maddening just the same

I’m fairly certain there is a caveat with 3 second in paint call that nullifies it if they shoot. Got into an argument with a ref recently but didn’t really have the time to get a thought out answer from him. In other words if Dixon were to of passed it after being camped in paint then the call should have been made. Sounds like a weird rule I know.

While final decisions will not be made until Season’s end on CMA , are any of us convinced he will be anything more as a Coach with any more years? I doubt it . And , if the University retains him solely on the basis of his extension , shame on them . We aren’t likely going to sny Tournament again this year and after 4 years of Anderson , that’s enough . Last night was a defining moment for Mike and this team . It was a failure . In front of a partisan St John’s fan base looking at some glimmer of hope for the Program , the School , CMA and these players, it went south with 8 plus minutes remaining to a very beatable Villanova team . A 19-5 run extinguished this season barring a miracle . Glimmers of light ? Some may think so but , reality is harsh and dims even the most optimistic. No , this is a bottom tier BE team . Again .
CMA might want to look elsewhere , if he wants to Coach anymore . Maybe follow the lead of a Tubby Smith , look to go to a smaller school , find a soft landing spot and enjoy a less competitive situation .

President Shanley and Cragg understand facts regarding the St. John’s basketball team which facts include substantial dollars for a buyout.

I don’t think they do, was it not idiot Cragg who awarded Anderson the extension and buy out based on NOTHING? If Anderson is retained because of an expensive buy out, Cragg should be fired on the spot.

had a night to sleep on this... and my emotions haven't change. Coming off 2 solid performances and a man-handling of Uconn on the road- with the hype being built all week (great job by the school- they put butts in the seats- they did their job)- Coach HAD to win this game. You HAD to win in front of that crowd.

We aren't talking about a 83-80 loss with Nova hitting a 3 at the buzzer... we didnt reach 50 points! we had the worst showing I have ever seen Live.... you can't do that.

I have tickets to the Seton Hall game and hope these kids finish the year playing hard... but it's going to be real tough to garner much if any interest outside those most dedicated fans.... And if we keep CMA...i don't have confidence even those die-hards will be interested to start the year.

Winning cures all, and CMA hasn't won went it mattered

Barring some kind of miracle turnaround, I do believe St. John's will move on from CMA at the end of the year. They will meet and negotiate a resignation that includes some compensation for him and his assistance. No inside information, but assuming the status quo continues, CMA will recognize that he is a pariah for the fan base and no longer has the support of the university. Players will be transferring and his status will make it difficult to recruit. He has money and that's no way to end an otherwise respectable career.

The offense looks putrid because the team lacks shooters. St. John's is easy to defend when you can pack it in and dare Posh, Wusu and Curbelo take 3s. You can't put this all on CMA. Players win and lose games. While CMA has to share the blame for putting together the team, he can't be blamed for the telegraphed and lazy passes and the poor shot selection.

While he let players get away with too much early on, it is good to see him pulling Jones whenever he hoists a long 3 early in the shot clock. Wish he would have pulled Curbelo too. An offense with players standing around and lots of forced shots and missed open looks is nothing new around here. It happens when you have team after team filled with players who can't shoot the ball. Everyone here knew this from day 1, but somehow hoped it wouldn't matter this time.
Wrong. CMA can't be (directly) blamed for missed shots. But, he absolutely should be blamed for telegraphed and lazy passes and poor shot selection. That is what a coach does. Figures out what shots are good for team and how to get them. Then, trains and drills the players to execute that plan.

This is really concerning. Not all layups are created equal. If your momentum is toward the rim and you were able to go up on balance and with authority, then yes...that is a good opportunity. But, if you are off-balance with momentum not toward the basket and throw up a one handed fling while contested, then no that is not a good shot. If the coach doesn't get that, then you can't expect the players to get that.

The best shot we got the last 6 minutes was a 12 foot contested hook shot by Soriano with his off hand. The best shot.

Anyone notice the promotional water bottles, scheduled to be given to the "first 2,500 fans", were given on the way out?

Small thing, but.....We are.....

And that was good execution by Dixon to force Joel to his weaker hand. How many times did we force Dixon or especially Slater to their weaker hand? (yes, I know Dixon is still pretty good with his off hand)
Dixon was 1-10 so I don’t know if our D can be without any credit for that. But you’re point is well understood and I agree 100% about lack of smart/winning plays.

Agree. I thought Soriano did a good jump not falling for fakes and pivots. But, I think that even though they were well defended that the quality of looks that Dixon missed down low were much higher than what we missed from close range.

The were a few strong defensive efforts, especially close to the basket. On the perimeter, our close outs still look lazy. The nonchalant arm waives drive me nuts. If you're there, make a point to get a hand in the shooter's face.
