Villanova (MSG), Fri., Jan. 20, 7p, FS-1

Too much over-analyzing. This their first game in the Garden and they CHOKED. Nothing to do with coaching. You could see from the outset what was happening.
What happens when you don't have a true home court. Strange environment...Its almost like a neutral site game

I don't think we are even the best Vincentian school in the conference.
Well, academically we are listed below DePaul which is located in the shit-hole city of Chicago.
Basketball-wise we are right there with DePaul as dinosaurs from the Ray Meyer and Lou Carnesecca era where we refused to hire outside the family to stay relevant. Unfortunately the lesson for both schools was learned too late. It takes a special coach and AD to turn a program around to become consistently competitive.
Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, Xavier, Villanova, Providence, Creighton all have had outstanding staff over the years to stay competitive. We have had long forgotten AD's and coaches like Mahoney, Roberts and Mullin that sucked the life out of the program with mediocre coaching.
Mike Anderson was actually a cut above them but the inability to get the right players has continued to keep St. John's a "once-proud" program instead of an annual NCAA tournament contender.
Bad hires lead to bad or mediocre outcomes.

The SJU board has always considered being a nice guy as a qualification for getting the SJU coaching job. Brian Mahoney , Norm Roberts and Mike Anderson would all be candidates for the nice guy hall of fame.
It is unfortunate they are not good basketball coaches.

Hey guys, I'm as frustrated as everyone else on this board. And been rooting for this team since 1974! But I fear we may not have hit rock bottom yet. It seems like it's in the cards for Georgetown to get their first Big East win in almost two years against us. I'll be at that game so I sincerely hope not. But the way this season has been going, it seems like it's kismet. I think I'll need a drink or two before I sit down.

Great job by the much maligned fans, for putting their butts in the seats. Not sure you could get the fans from any of the other bottom of the league teams to turn out almost 14k for a game like this.

Exactly, and that's the shame.

There is a substantial base of interest still lingering around from the good old days. The problem is that a significant percentage is soon to age out. Every year that slips away without putting together an exciting run, that base further erodes. This is why I have changed my tune on Pitino. He may be the "jolt" (Paultz's word) this program needs to get off life support.

Regarding Posh v Curbelo, I see in Posh a guy who was terrific asa freshman and good last year. This year I see a guy confused and out of sorts. He should be the primary ball handler. But staff has bought into the Curbelo crapper. In Posh I see errors of effort. Curbelo makes
Mistakes because he is too concerned
With flash and trick ball than making
The decent correct play. He’s selfish and erratic and a net minus. When Posh was good, he makes the team and teammates better. He plays under control and plays
Tough defense.

Adding curbelo to this mix was a disaster. The staff needs to put the ball back in Posh’s hands. And by God, don’t play them together. I’d limit Andre to 10 minutes a game and give King some burn unless he proved to be bad. I’d rather have Wusu handle than Curbelo.

Wait, no, stop this. It makes too much sense.

It's much easier just to post "Posh sucks this year" and trash a fantastic St. John's player who has already been one of the most decorated in program's history, who gives his all, who is fearless, who outrebounds guys almost a foot taller, who probably has more black and blues than any other player we've had, who took a chance and tried to alter his game significantly because his coach said it'd be better for the team.

Except for maybe Storr, all these kids have played at MSG before. Most of them multiple times. And they had the crowd behind them. Maybe you can dismiss some early game jitters, but absolutely no excuse for that kind of garbage performance for an entire game. And most certainly the coach shoulders much of the blame.

Yup. When you are poorly prepared and managed it is much easier to throw up on yourself. No structured system = no clue.

Agree , games against Syracuse, UCONN, Duke at the garden are all neutral games, but the away games against those teams are true away games , a bit of a disadvantage.

That said, yesterday was a very winnable game. Nova shot poorly. Have to win those, especially at home.

But we did have a home court advantage yesterday. I'd say that at least 75% of the crowd was rooting for us.

Based on the apparel people were wearing (Nova paraphernalia vs St. John's paraphernalia), 60/40 at best, and I think that was generous.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Our best shot to get a home cort advantage is to move all of our games to UBS, and do what Seton Hall does at the Rock, and curtain off the upper bowl.

The Garden, IMO, has been our biggest impediment to winning for quite a long time now.

Sure looked like a sea of red from where I was sitting.

Definitely higher than 60-40 for St. John’s fans
