Villanova- Game 2

In the grand scheme, we were 21-9 before this game and 21-10 after. Don't throw out the baby because of one bad loss.

Nova look like a Final 4 team; getting smashed by them on their home court without CO and JB was not unexpected or the disaster some would have you believe. Nova just beat Providence by 28, Seton Hall by 26. They have been SOLID all year. They are #4 and we are unranked for good reason. I am not happy that we got slapped around but at the end of the day it is but one loss.

What is more important to me is that (a) we came through with no more injuries (b) Branch and CO got some needed recuperation time (c) RJ23 continues to look good (d) D'Lo/PG4/Sir'D/RJ23 averaged only 31 mins and should be fresh (e) we will not be complacent and should be fired up when facing the Friars. That is only game that matters right now.

So if we play them Friday and they smack smack and smack us some more to the ground, we should just accept it because they are the #4 team and we are unranked. Well if that's the case then I guess SJU fans shouldn't give two shits about ever being good.
Afterall we are (as it looks) a fan base that accepts getting a beat down.

Ahhh yeah so what, I wonder what the excuse is when they smacked us in the last 10minutes when both Obekpa and Branch both played.
Ahhh yeah screw it, Villanova is #4 in the country, so we all should be happy and just accept it.

Omg. Stop. Dude, you were pleading that Lavin did what he did Saturday. That is what is bothering me right now. You obviously didn't read TX's post. The point is with the situation we are in, it was in the best interest to not go all out, especially when Phil went down with an injury early second (were down 4 at that point). I wanted us to go all out but once they made the decision and went with it I understood it.

No one, I repeat NO ONE is happy with getting beat down on Saturday. It was embarassing in every way. With that said, it puts in a position to get revenge on Friday night if we get there. There is no way in hell that game will be a blowout if it happens. I can pretty much guarantee that.

Everyone just needs to calm down. The emotions on here are fluctuating like crazy. We get too high after wins and too low after losses. The loss was bad there is no sugar coating that fact, but more facts are we will dance this year and have an opportunity this week to get our seed better and improve chances for a good run. Hopefully a memorable run. A bad loss to a #4 team in the nation is not gonna be what defines this team and this season. Believe that.

Wait a second, Lavin gelled his hair at halftime??

It was a bad loss so I was going to avoid the board for a day or two, but is this true??
At this point he's just trolling us. Theres no other explanation.

Actually I would have been really concerned had Jarvis ever gelled his head at hafltime, but are you guys frigging kidding me?

When it was clear we werent going to win, Lavin started saving bodies:

C Jones 15 mins
Amar 15 mins
JDR 9 mins
Felix 16 mins
Khadim 7 mins
Myles 6 mins
Lipscomb 6 mins

Obviously when those first 4 guys play so many minutes, we aren't even beating DePaul or Creighton. We have a 6 man rotation, and spot Amar or Balamou some time to burn minutes and keep guys out of foul trouble. Why is that so hard to comprehend? From the jump ball we didn't have a prayer with 2 guys out for the game.

Actually Jarvis and his staff were accused of something much more serious than applying hair gel at halftime. A player and a greasy hand arrangement tarnished his record at St. John's, tarnished the reputation of the university and forever changed the image of St. John's basketball. I commend Avon and others for doing extensive research into redmen losing game differentials over 30 years of Big East basketball. The historical perspective and statistics furnished by Dr. Fun reminded me of one of the years noted by Fun, e.g., the "coach Clark" year that deserved and asterisk along with this game for having an undermanned team that contributed to the losing margin. It seems like just yesterday that in February 2004 St. John’s lost to Boston College, 89-61 with just 4 scholarship players and a bunch of walk ons. I can't recall exactly but didn't we dress the team managers for that game? I will leave it to Avon Barksdale to research that particular game. I doubt this Villanova loss will have the same historical impact as that BC game and that season and wish I had been a member of this Forum then to read about the outrage about having players arrested, expelled, paid off by assistant coaches, etc.
As an astute poster mentioned earlier this was just one game played against a Final Four contender with a walk on starting at center (Curtis Johnson was a Jarvis scholarship player that started in the BC game) and, after Harrison fouled out and Jordan on the bench, the team beaten by 30+ points did not lose because of excessive narcissistic self attention by our hair gelled coach but because walk ons were given some recognition by their coach on national television for their voluntary hard work while the opposing coach chose to rub it in Lavin's face. I lost a little respect for Jay Wright after this game. If I had pictures of myself with him I would burn them.

Yeah, dude, I was pleading for CO to be benched, so let m e guess if superman played that game, we would have lost by just 2, or 3pnts? Is it a team or CO on defense all by himself.
OK, Jack so maybe if he played then Villanova would score only 70. Ok Jack you're absolutly right.

Well it sure was a blowout at msg in January, with CO and Branch playing, so how you guarantee that?

"Everyone just needs to calm down. The emotions on here are fluctuating like crazy. We get too high after wins and too low after losses."
Here's where you don't get where I'm coming from, it's not about winning and losing to me. It's basketball, you win some and you lose some. I get that 100%.
The thing that really really bothers me is how easy it looked on those layups and dunks those last 13minutes when theyu outscored us by 33freaking pnts. Can you say that they were even trying? I don't know but to me it looked like they gave up.
Defense is all about self pride and team pride, you can't let opposing teams just have a great time just doing whatever they want, play with some fk'ing heart.

Friday night I pray that they play each other, I won't be expecting a win, but just to see how much they care about what haqppened on Saturday.
Just show me that they have the balls to fight those bastards for 40 f'ing minutes. Nothing more and nothing less

Wow! An exegesis!! A few of them!!!
:) hooray!

First off, let's not overreact to the Nova loss. There's a reason they are the #4 team in the country and we are unranked. We played without Obekpa and Branch, the game was at Nova, and it was Senior Night for them. Plus, Nova is a bad matchup for us for reasons discussed below. The line on the game was Nova -12.5. So while the enthusiasm of our fan base was understandable given our recent play, this wasn't a particularly winnable game going in.

Having said that, I think a two-minute stretch early in the second half when the Nova lead went from 3 to 14 is a microcosm of everything that is right with Nova and wrong with us. Each play in that sequence, Nova spread its guards around the perimeter and put Pinkston (later Ochefu) down on the block. The ball started in a corner and swung around the perimeter until it got dumped down to the block. The spacing and ball movement were both outstanding. If we left the big man singled up, it was an easy 2 (especially playing without a big man). If we sent help, it left an open 3.

There are a few takeaways from that. For one, that Nova is a well-coached team that has an excellent idea of what it wants to do in the halfcourt, identifies and takes advantage of opponent weaknesses, and executes beautifully. For another, the team has been constructed to fit the approach, with two solid big men and a whole bunch of guards who can shoot.

By contrast, in the same stretch where Nova was executing play after play on the offensive end, every time Nova scored whichever one of our players got the ball on the inbounds would dribble up the floor and jack up a 3 (all of which missed). From there, it was on to blowout city.

I think that depending on matchups, St John's may make a good run in the NCAAs. We will be a tough matchup for most teams due to our athleticism, and we have been able to handle teams with less-skilled bigs (Josh Smith, Stainbrook).

However, I do think that the Nova game shows you the difference between where we are and what a sustainably good basketball program looks like.

I've really enjoyed watching this team all year have a particular appreciation for these kids dating back to the St. Thomas Aquinas exhibition, when my young sons got to meet many players, all of whom were very friendly and accommodating.

That being said, I wasn't ready to simply dismiss what went on in the 2nd half here. The degree to which our bigs were overmatched in the 2nd half was startling. Some of that is because Amar/JDR and Christian Jones haven't played regular minutes. Awfully tough for them to compete against that frontline under those circumstances.

At the end of the day, the whole College basketball following nation picks up the paper/reads on line an embarrassing score. If beating Georgetown handily in a nationally televised game was a high water mark for the program, Saturday was a bit of a black eye.

We'll see Thursday afternoon whether there is a hangover.

I am okay with the premise. But if he was prepared to get smeared in favor of saving bodies, why was he so slow to take DLO out of the game? In fact, he never did. The sore calf had to foul out.

I agree. To me, right now Harrison, against top competition, is simply not the same player her was earlier int he season. HE should have yanked him.

Quick question. I was seated in section 209, but from my seat it appeared that when Harrison fouled out, the applause he receive was directed at him in appreciation, not mocking him for fouling out. Anyone have a clearer view of that, because I'm not certain.

If it was acknowledgment of his career, then a classy move by away fans.

Villanova is a better team than St John's...Villanova is a better team than just about anyone in the country, and would likely beat Kentucky right now. It would have been more competitive with CO in there, but we'd still lose. I don't fault Lavin for the game effort. He did try a zone for a few minutes and they hit 3's like they were shooting layups. It was sad to see the true colors of our extended bench. I guess I more or less knew, but now it's crystal clear. You can certainly fault Lavin for that. We basically have a bench full of D3 players, excluding Branch and Amar. Luckily we have a core of seniors who will give us some more great moments this year if we can get healthy this week.

I agree with most of this, but UK would beat the crap out of Nova.

Kentucky would probably win but I definitely give Nova a chance. One of only a couple of teams that I give a chance against kentucky.

Nova has the 3pt shooters to keep it close with Kentucky. Also strong forwards in Pinkston and Ochefu who wouldn't be pushed around by Cauley Stein and Towns. It'd be very close

We don't have an extended bench. Our bench is ONE (1) player, Jamal Branch. Amar is an 18 year old freshman who may need 3 years to develop. The rest of the "bench" is composed of garbage time one minute players. To have won 21 games with virtually no bench is an accomplishment.

I consider Amar a D1 player who would have had a more appropriate roll on a well balanced team. He was asked to play like a Junior this year, which wasn't really fair.

He is not strong enough at this point, and has very slow footwork. As a result he gets destroyed by talented bigs. Nova went to town against him, and he either just let them score or fouled them. I'm not sure that he will ever amount to much at this point. Compare him to 17 year old Sabonis, who arrived ready to contribute for Gonzaga - right now as a big Amar will not contribute. Perhaps as a very tall 3 he may have some value unless he gets a lot stronger

I see him as a tall 3, who has the potential to be a solid (35%) 3 point threat. I don't see him as a banger, but I think he will have some nice contributions as a Junior and Senior.

Excellent description of Amar. You can build strength and teach footwork. He has potential but used out of position this year out of necessity thanks to Mensa members ADR and Keith Thomas.
