Vaccine

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-latin-america-56723439

Get vaccinated.   Every time the virus is transmitted from one host to another it mutates slightly, even if tht host had no symptoms.  It is inevitable that eventually one of those mutations will have a major impact on our ability to defeat this virus.
If the BBC story above doesn't scare the crap out of the 21% of Americans who won't get the vaccine under any circumstances and send them running to the pharmacy to get in line, then they are beyond hope/redemption and are quite literally a danger to the rest of the human race.

How do you get to:
It is inevitable that eventually one of those mutations will have a major impact on our ability to defeat this virus.

Sounds like a huge speculation.

I got both of the Pfizer shots and my wife got the Moderna shots. No side effects w either them.

Clearly you didn't watch the video.  Brazil is dealing with one of these mutations now.  The version of covid that tore through the NY Metro area last year didn't have as big an impact on people under 40 as it did on people over 40.
In Brazil last month, half the people in ICU's were under 40.  Sure hope the vaccination you got works against that variant, but the million dollar question(s) is: What's the next mutation going to look like?  And will we have the tools in place to stop that version?
Keep giving the virus a chance to evolve and we'll find out eventually.  Get everyone vaccinated and there are no hosts to give the virus a chance to evolve again.

Science & Statistics, not speculation.

You are correct. I did not watch the video. There’s been too much speculation by scientists and others. ie. Dr. Fauci. Mixed messages by experts.

South America has been getting wrecked by covid especially Peru and their lockdowns have been crazy strict. Last year Nathalies friend in the building where she owns her apartments got covid I think roughly April and she just hit it again because of the Brazilian variant. The vaccine issue down there is flat out embarrassing

I saw my doctor this week for check up and her estimation was that we will be wearing masks for the 1 to 2 years.  One positive is that you can delay facial plastic surgery for those jowls.  Sadly, I am getting used to wearing one and even feel it helps with deqling with seasonal allegies.  As to variants, they are similar to the new strains of influenza which is why we get an annual flu shot.  My buddy who is a doctor of immunology predicted this last April/

Although I try not to wade into these topics, what you are referring to is not speculation.  It is a demonstration of how science works AND that it is working.  For example, the initial guidance was to use good hand hygiene and that there was no need for masks.  When it became scientifically evident that the virus was primarily airborne, the advice was amended to include mask wearing - which was then demonstrably effective when that advice was followed.  More recently, the contact-related hygiene guidance was rescinded because it has now become clear that surfaces are a low risk.

That's the way the process works - you provide the best medical and public health advice you can based on the available information, and then you improve that advice (modify) as time goes on and evidence supports the changes.

No question that some degree of judgment is required.  You can set the needle at "There's something dangerous out there, but we aren't 100% sure about all of the aspects of it so let's do nothing," or you can set the needle at "There's something dangerous out there, but we aren't 100% sure about all of the aspects of it, so lock yourself in your basement until further notice," or anything in between.

In our schizophrenic country we have managed to do both things at the same time depending on your geography, political affiliation, or personal preference.  Which by the way does not do us any good as a society, since regardless of any of those factors we are still one society and communicable disease doesn't care about any of that.

As far as mutation, that's just basic science.  Viruses replicate themselves, it's how they spread.  Each time they spread, there is a chance they will mutate.  Each time they mutate, it is to improve their survival (think Darwin), which for our purposes means they tend to become more contagious and/or more deadly.

We are in a race of vaccination versus mutation.  If we get enough people vaccinated so the virus cannot spread, it cannot mutate.  And if cannot mutate, the odds of it becoming more contagious or more deadly drop.  Which is a good thing.

Wow, you really did attend those HS college prep science classes.

That, and it's somewhat related to a couple of my various day jobs.

LFM, first off your longer post, which  I didn't repeat here was wonderful and right on the money. Just curious, is one of your day jobs related to ERISA/benefits or employment law? That was mine before retirement and I often tell my wife I am glad I retired before this virus hit as it would have pushed me over the edge at the tender age of 66/67.

last night and today second shot side effects hit big time. Not much arm soreness just total rundown fatigue and body aches headache etc but not much of fever. Not craving lobster roll today but craving cheese steak subs

I'm going for #2 tomorrow - remember to bring me over the leftover cheese steaks

my wife and I both got our second doses of Moderna.

Me: day after aches, fatigue, nausea, went away by nighttime.

Her: her day after:  some tiredness.

Our daughter got her second of Pfizer and her day after was aches and soreness, bad headaches, no appetite.

All of us the day after that were back to being fine.

Small price to pay for the piece of mind of being vaccinated.

(Or is it peace of mind?)

Second Moderna shot yesterday and no side effects, not even fatigue like first shot.
