Hard to say why, they think it is high schoolers and young adults and such having large parties or gatherings with no precautions. The NJ recent spikes pretty much attributed to home gatherings and parties, not schools, gyms, restaurants, etc.
Gov. Murphy said yesterday zero additional lifting of restrictions for the foreseeable future because the trend is not good.
NJ has had worse numbers (per capita) throughout this whole thing (except maybe NYC in the extremely early stages). Connecticut again per capita has always done far better than NJ and even NY. It is hard to explain since the states all have similar profiles.
NJ saw its key metrics (hospitalizations, ICU, percent positivity) drop significantly in January and Feb.
But they've pretty much plateaued since March 1 and the case rate per capita is now by far the highest in the nation. Not a good sign when almost 1 million vaccine doses were administered since then.
Experts attribute it to more contagious variants that are alive and well and circulating in NJ. They think the numbers will drop when this supposed J&J vaccine windfall comes in a few weeks. We'll see....
