Vaccine

My wife and I received our second vaccine shots yesterday. The only side effect is a little discomfort in my arm where the dose was injected. It is a psychological relief to be finished. We realize that we still need to wear masks when we go out and do everything else that is suggested.

If anyone is having a hard time getting the vaccine, some of my friends went to Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn and were able to get vaccinated.

Praying that all who choose to are able to get the vaccine and we will be able to return to some semblance of a normal life.

Great to hear Panther.

It's still a mess over here in NJ.

80% of NJ's 22K deaths are those 65+

But seniors aren't getting the priority.

In fact they're behind the eight ball because 90% of the appointment scheduling is online and they're competing against younger, more tech-savvy people.

In other news, I'm taking my folks, 81, 76, back to Aviation High in Queens next week for their 2nd shot. What a relief it will be.

I just chatted yesterday with a cousin who is a hospital administrator in Brooklyn.   Each day they toss out a bunch of unused doses.   By the rules given to them, they have to discard rather than use those doses.  He said they are restricted on who they can admnister doses to, and all in all, this program is horribly rolled out in NY.   His brother is a NYC police captain, and they are administering doses from the precinct.   Same deal, every day they toss out a significant number of unused doses.

They need to create a system whereby folks that are registered can get notified of available doses giving them a window of XX minutes to get to the sites that have them.    It seems that would be possible by text of email, and could move a lot of people out of the queu.   Even if you had to vaccinate otherwise ineligible people that would be better than tossing out doses.

The "mega-sites" in New Jersey have stand-by lines just for this.

It sucks but folks without appointments spend 8 hours in line or in their cars waiting to see if there are leftover doses at the end of the day.

Redmen.com has helped my computer skills temendously. When I retired 10 years ago, my computer skils were limited to what I had to do for my job. I can only imagine how daunting it is for those older than me to use a computer. I am fortunate that my granddaughter helps me and I have 3 Goddaughters who also help me. One of whom will receive her MBA from St Johns in May.

Just want to say that as I get older, I appreciate the importance of having familial support more. None of us could have been prepared for what is going on in the wotld at the present time. In the best of times, the elderly can get isolated, this Pandemic makes family interactions even harder.  Praying for everyone and their loved ones.

Can't believe the amount of elders I have helped signing up with no family at all around here on Staten Island. Its really sad.

vaccine availability opening up rapidly in florida.
received a call from manatee county yesterday after being on their list for  3 1/2 weeks.
i turned it down as i had moderna #1 10 days ago through sarasota county.
still no word from charlotte county.
winn-dixie and walmart are now on board. publix has been doing the vaccines for awhile.
although the VA's current literature requires one to be 75 years. its actually whoever gets through to the VA on a day when they have the vaccine, that get serviced regardless of age.

In Fl. 65 year olds and older can get vaccinated. Palm beach county was a mess, had to get my vaccine in Broward county. Palm Beach county finally contacted me a couple of days ago.
Regarding Publix my wife would go to their web site 6 am to no avail. Maybe now it's different

florida publix vaccines are now in half the florida counties.
it is a county by county allotment of the number of doses available.
some counties have 1k doses, others 4k,.and still others, every number in between. no clue on how that is.
the SW counties  tend to fill up very fast.
the NE counties are seemingly very slow to fillup.
each day the doses are available shows a very different picture than other days, as far as the number of doses available and how many per county.
the first time i got through to publix. it was to be in deland - 2 hours, 50 minutes one way. i passed on it.

I have friends here in Venice that got their vaccines at Publix yesterday. They said it was easy and orderly. I got on the Publix website yesterday at 7 am and finally got an appointment to receive the vaccine up in the panhandle, on Monday, which I decided against. I'll be back on it Monday morning hoping to get an appointment in one of the nearer counties. If not, I'm willing to wait until I'm back on LI the end of April.

Panther - great to here that you and your wife got your 2nd shot. Also great to here what you said about redmen.com and your computer skills. Some people might laugh that off but this board does a lot for many.

I won't be eligible to get my vaccine any time soon, but one of my issues as along with many other parents of young children will face is that there really hasn't been any testing done on children. So as things stand children aren't getting vaccinated and even once the roll out concludes to everyone who is eligible, children will still be exposed. So for just the sake of that, I hope people can continue to wear masks and still play it safe around others.

My wife and I are getting our first shots tomorrow

Had been scheduled for an earlier appointment but NJ ran out of the vaccine

Very, very thankful to be going tomororw.

Don't leave until you get your appointment scheduled right then and there for your 2nd shot.

Most places are doing it now, but it's been a big headache in NJ.

Still can't get a shot on Staten Island for underlying conditions. Have to give it time I guess.

Wife and I got our second Pfizer shots today.  One son and his wife and one of their kids already post-quarantine after having the virus.  Older son and his wife both physicians and inoculated early but youngest grandson in Pittsburgh is just now out of quarantine.

I won the NJ vaccine lottery and NJ DoH contacted me after pre-registering, and I got my first shot and now scheduled tomorrow for second (moderna). I felt so lucky being in the right age-group and having multiple underlying conditions that I was contacted.

They did not give me an exact date for my second at the time of my first, but two weeks later I got a text and an e mail setting up the second (now with the storm tomorrow who knows?).

NJ's roll-out not great, I do not know of a single other person who was contacted by NJ DoH after pre-registering.

Calling individual sites was a nightmare; 90 minutes hold times in queue only to get to number 2 or 3 in queue and finding that the line drops off. Did that for days trying to get an appointment for my wife.
