Vaccine

I got my first vaccination yesterday through the VA here in Portland, OR. They did their staff and long term inpatients first and are now reaching out to more vulnerable out-patients. I am 57 and have been a quadripegic for 36 years. The spnal cord injured vets are a priority group now but they will be expanding soon so if anyone on the board or their family members use the VA, they should be eligible soon.

Getting vaccinated yesterday was one of the most efficient experiences I have had at the VA and they will be moving the process to a larger facility shortly so they can accomodate more folks. They seem to be dialing in the system before opening it up too much which is awesome. Hopefully, other places are doing something similar so the number of vaccines administered will climb in the next few weeks.

My 93 year old Uncle and 92 year old Aunt live in Bend. My Uncle a Marine vet. I expect they got the vaccine already, but am going to check with them. Thank you for your service sir, and as RN said; God Bless you and post more often. Stay well.

My wife got the 2nd shot yesterday.  She came home from work early today with chills and fever.  She's relaxing and is wrapped in a blanket after Advil.

Thanks guys!

I moved out here in 1997 and found Redmen.com when I was trying to learn who replaced Fran as coach. I have thoroughly enjoyed this resource and community since then. I don't post much since I have no real real insight into the program especially being this far away. I would post the occasional Mo Harkless article while he was with the Blazers but, sadly, he has moved on.

I'm excited about the vaccine for many reasons but especially since high school sports are suppose to start next month. Our two boys will both be playing football and I would hate to miss games. Basketball is scheduled for May and one our boys should start gettng his first varsity playing time.

Be safe and be healthy!

Monte,

Bend is a beautiful area. We're quite a distance away but let me know if I can help your uncle navigate the VA system in any way.

Thanks so much for the offer Suhr. I will definitely let you know. Stay well.

My wife and I are scheduled to get our first dose of the vaccine on Friday. I am 72 and she is 71. We got appointments at a hospital that both of us use. The process was relatively easy because all of our medical records were already there. For those 65 and over, this may be the best way to get the vaccine.

Rex Burger and lobster is a great place near the hospital where you are getting the vaccine to get a safe lobster roll to go

I took my elderly parents to Aviation High in Sunnyside this morning for their shots.

I am usually sarcastic here on redmen.com. But everything I say in this post is sincere.

I was beyond impressed with the efficiency of the operation and the pleasant demeanor of all the workers.

We arrived around 11:20 am for an 11:40 appointment for my dad, 81,  and a 12:20 appointment for my mom, 76.

I expected long lines, throngs of people. Nope. We were greeted by throngs of young people working the site, most of whom had a sign around their chest indicating what other languages they spoke. It seemed the staff-to-patient ratio was lower than 2-to-1.

My dad was ushered in first, but since there was no line they quickly allowed my mom to go in too.

It felt like a Disney ride. We went in a narrow area with a few twists and turns that lead us to a gymnasium with about 30 vaccination stations.

My dad went to one. My mom went to another.

The lady giving my dad the shot asked him where he wanted it. He said "Anywhere! Put it my rear end if you have to." The lady had a good belly laugh.

Within five minutes each of them had gotten their first dose of the Moderna vaccine.

We were lead out to the school cafeteria to sit for 15 minutes - the standard time to see if there is any immediate, severe  allergic reaction.

We walked out before noon.

But not before we went up to an operations manager clothed in her burka with a sign that said she could speak Benghali, and my octogenarian Irish-American dad thanked her profusely for making the process seamless.

It was a true Queens moment.

And it was one of the best days I've had in the past 10 months.

The beauty of America! God bless her and us all.

In Florida,  only hospitals have the Pfizer vaccine. If you get a vaccine elsewhere it's Moderna. A number of people in the medical profession have said that the first shot is no big deal, but the second is knocking some people on their rear ends.

I recently spent some time in East Texas. My advice to everyone is to avoid all of Texas. People in this state must think the virus is a hoax, since about half don't wear masks in the stores. Most of the others wear them around their necks or under their noses. No surprise, as they also don't believe in recycling.

Staten Island, like always, was totally unprepared. My dad at 85 had to wait 2 hours in the cold on Saturday. The guy even gave me a hard time as I wanted to wait for him while he sat in the car. In the end, he got the shot which is all that matters but sometimes common sense has to be used but this is Staten Island.

Understand your frustration.   They needed a better system of having people register and rather than wait on line text you so you didn't have to stand in the cold.   Of course, I'm sure they would be concerned that people would pay others to wait in line and insert themselves.   My wife did not even have to show ID.  She is  a schoolteacher and eliegible.

Friend of mine participated in the Moderna trials. Felt nothing with the first shot and thought she got a placebo. Second shot produced mild fever and body aches for 12-24 hours.
She was just "unblinded" and yes she got the actual vaccine.

If anyone meets the criteria for a vaccine and are having difficulty getting an appt or their appt s far from now let me know if you want me to try and get an appt at the hospital i work at. My hospital has begun taking appt through employees reaching out to community but it has to go though employees.  And its as hospital has/gets supply. I sent email for 3 people yesterday and all 3 going tomorrow for shot.

I had planned on going to Winthrop Hospital but Albert Einstein contacted both of us and we were able to go together. Feeling relieved. This whole situation has taken a phscho;ogical and emotional toll on us.

Beware the second shot may have a effect on you and your wife.  My wife got the second shot at work and got a fever and chills the next day, and felt poorly for 4-5 days, getting better a little each following day.
