Up Next: Butler

27 & 9 for Sampson

that's nice but I'm more impressed with the 2 jumpers he made that both stopped Butler runs.

That was the key, IMO. Every time Butler made a push (which you knew they would do, because they were the home team), Sampson ended it before things got too serious (alright, Harrison had 2 FTs to make it 59-50, but Sampson got the bucket right after that to regain the momentum).

Really solid win , great for the team confidence as a whole, a win is always a win but let's not get excited and think our season has turned around. The real test will be Tuesday against creighton who will be ranked this week that would be a huge win for and could turn our whole season around. I think we can beat creighton without a doubt, it will give us out first win against a ranked team as well.

Confidence is building for Jakarr, Jamal, and Jordan every single game and lavin must keep that going . The rotation has been much better and we need to keep it that way . I hope everyone is seeing how much of a cancer phill Greene has been to our team he needs to get 6-10 min a game 10 min max! Lavin must keep playing Jamal esp cause he's not turning the ball over as much. The 3 guard rotation must be Jamal , Jordan, Harrison.

We're still not rebounding the ball well hopefully we can fix that as we are starting to fix a lot of things with our team as a whole. I like what I am seeing now tho great fu*king win !!! Lets go St. John's !!!!

I'm not a big fan of Phil Greene, but unless you know something I don't, to tag him "a cancer" to the team is unfair.

I don't have any stats to back me up, but I really like when Harrison, Jordan, and Branch are on the floor together

Incremental improvement. We found a way to close out Seton Hall and now we have our first road win. Another step in the process. If Creighton beats Georgetown they will be ranked this week. The next step in the process is to beat a ranked team. Although on the road it will be a huge task but if Jordan and Sampson continue to play like this along with D'Angelo we will be tough to beat. I like Gift playing these type of minutes and even Hooper was used perfectly today. Great win!! Congrats to the team and coaches. On to Creighton and lets have this team peaking come Big East Tournament time.

I'm with you redken.

I actually like Greene a lot. He's just not that good.

Calling someone a "cancer" indicates something more, at least to me. He can help this team. His minutes just have to go down (unless he his hitting shots).

He's a good spot up shooter when some one creates for him. Phill never takes it to the whole , barely shoots free throws , why? Because he loves his pull up jump shot that he has been shooting since freshmen year. He messes up our half court offense , never wants to make the extra pass, sometimes he shoots our momentum away . Phill cares about his box score and you can see that by the way he plays. There have been soooo many times this season where team mates have been open and phill decided to take the jump shot. It was cool the last 2 years with him doing that because that's what the team needed , we had no depth , we didn't have that many scorers. This is a different team with a lot of options and phill just isn't adapting to it. Sure he has had some good games but any shooter that shoots as much as phill does can get hot in some games here and there. His defense can be solid from time to time I give him that . I really wish I saw Jordan take it to the rack the last few seconds of the providence game instead of phill being that it was the 10th time in 3 years that phill has gone to the whole. The best thing phill can do now is give us 6 points off the bench in 6-10 mins of PT which I can see him doing .

I agree Redken, he's not a cancer at all. He's just not being utilized properly. He's just not a point guard. He's a back up 2 guard who should be backing up Harrison. He should never be on the floor unless Rysheed or Branch are out there to handle the point guard duties.

Great wins but tempered expectations going forward because this was a pretty weak butler teAm. I really hope Lavin keeps the rotation short going forward.

This Butler team beat three big six schools, lost to LSU and #5 Oklahoma State by two each, and took #4 Nova to OT. They have lost most of their games by 3 or less, several in OT. This is only the second time they have been blown out!

Creighton had 21 three pointers against Nova. Can't zone them. Have to continue racing the ball upcourt.

After our 0-5 conference start, are we really in a position to call any conference opponent weak? Come on now, it was a nice road win in which we showed maturation pulling away after Butler's run.

I know we've had a poor season overall, but give our guys credit when credit is due, we got a nice, solid road win today against a team that hasn't been blown out at home all year.

What a satisfying victory for a change!
Lavin finally started a rotation that allowed the ball to move more efficiently and, although we allowed Butler to dictate a half court game our three guards were up to the task this time.
Jamal Branch played the point well with Sheed as the secondary ball handler and shooting guard.  That took some possessions from Harrison but in a good way.  D'Lo has a habit of forcing things, even in this game, but having two other guards that could score negated Harrison's rather average offensive game against Butler.  Branch played his best game as a Johnnie.  I have no clue what is going on with Chris Opekpa but I hope he snaps out of it soon.
Special kudos to Jakarr who finally played a complete game and hit a few mid-range jumpers that he has been missing.
Good subs by Lav this game and it was enjoyable seeing our redmen faithful behind the bench.  Good job all around guys!!!
P.S. The fans here are so down and seemingly, expecting a loss, no bothered to change the thread topics from Up Next Buter to Butler game thread. LOL!

This is crazy. A cancer? He busts his arse and played out of position out of necessity for the first two years of his career while getting blasted by our fan base because he wasn't Erick Barkley. I think you need to get a better understanding of what a team cancer really is.

The kid is shooting 45% from two, 40.5% from three, and never turns the ball over while always playing tough d. He's not a PG and why Lavin has him and Dom handling the ball, I'll never understand. Give Jordan and Branch all 40 minutes at point, play them together for a little as well, and get Greene in as a spot up shooter and scorer off the ball.

Come on SigEp...I agree with your premise (more Jordan/Branch) but Phil is not a cancer...he has a role and can, in fact, be a weapon...In a role where he is catch and shoot or taking to hoop, he can/will thrive and be of value...to your point, the bus needs to be driven by Jordan/Branch and we have to live with the risk that comes with their aggressive nature...

Yes we can call a weak team a weak team. I am happy they won but will wait until next game to see if they are really turning it around.

Spot on as far as I'm concerned. The only rationale Lavin has alluded to is saying that he doesn't turn the ball over. That however doesn't make him a point guard.

Ok guys maybe I was over reacting with saying he's a cancer . What I should of said was " how much better our team is without phill Greene " sometimes I tend to get real emotional after St. John games.
