Tulane

Dom's playing really really well, but I think handling the ball on the break is still his weakness.

Finishing on the break? Not a problem.
But he's still good for two turnovers on the break per game.

Simply not true as he averages just 1.6 TO playing 33 minutes a game while leading the team with 3.3 assists per game.

That doesn't mean he's best at running the break as you also mentioned in a post above. When he grabs a rebound and dribbles it's downright frightening. Pretty safe that the vast majority of his 1.6 per game come from those ill advised coast to coast and his 3.3 come from sweet dishes in a half court set where he is being utilized properly for the first time in his career.

Frightening to you and to opponents. Pretty safe that many of his nice dishes are in transition. Completely safe that this staff has full confidence in him when he has the ball.

Will be interesting to see if The Torch lobby's for an extension on their web site (www.torchonline.com) after the team's 7th straight win.

Saw Roger Rubin and Kieran Lynch, among others, state on Twitter, that this is our best start since '85-6

Still too early to talk about that JSJ.
But I'll admit he's doing his best to deserve an extension. Not there yet though.

In whose mind? You and Otis for sure Desco, however maybe this brings you around.

I was happy to pay $33.25 a ticket to sit twelve rows behind the St. John's bench. While the crowd was small. It was loud and a lot of fun. The crowd against Gonzaga was just as small and never got into the game. I paid around the same ticket price to sit in the back of a corner while the section next to me was empty.

Barclays is a great venue to watch basketball. Chris Obekpa will need to know that he has to avoid fouls in the first half of games if we are to maintain a national ranking during conference play. Dom showed what he is capable of and he needs to maintain the intensity he showed today. Jordan looked winded so he must still be recovering from the flu. In limited minutes I liked Amar and Felix for the first time this year. Amar is certainly not gun shy and has a natural stroke. Lav doing his best and is a couple of recruits away from an extension if he can get a couple of verbals. It will be an interesting Spring!

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. The results this yearnare great but if Jordan and Obekpa leave as expected, our future is scary. We need recruiting results badly. Although I'm not confident we get someone better anyway

Anybody that doesn't appreciate the way this squad is playing will never happy. Hope it continues. Have to give credit to Lav and the team. These kids are playing great basketball.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. Extending Lavin now to me means we are ok with making the tournament every fourth year as a program. With a nice NCAA run this year Lavin has earned another year with the program, but next year will most likely be a losing one and unless the recruiting takes a turn for the better, I can't encourage or agree with an extension. In other words, I don't think this team and this season can get him a long term extension in my opinion or at least he doesn't deserve one. I need to see more consistency.

With that being said I hope we can all put next season into a "cross that bridge when we come to it" territory because this season has been great and hopefully it continues to be great. Go redmen

From one neurotic worrier to another: Can we just enjoy this year, and worry about next year when it comes?

1985-86 Season

First 11 games:

Beat Navy 66-58
Beat West Virginia 65-58
Lost to Duke at The Garden: 70-71
Beat Louisville at The Garden 86-79
Beat Wagner 85-55
Beat Columbia 80-58
Beat Fairleigh Dickinson 88-56
Beat Marist 62-58
Beat UCLA 69-65
Beat Niagara 104-61
Beat Monmouth 98-58

Then went on to beat James Madison (79-57), St. Bonaventure (85-69), @Providence (95-90 in OT) and Pitt (78-75) before losing to BC at Boston Garden in OT 77-79 on January 7th, 1986.

That was a frustrating loss to a poor BC team (13-15, 4-12), although they did have Dana Barros and senior Roger McCready. McCready, who was their leading scorer, was an undersized 6-4 forward from Xaverian HS who had the heart of a lion.

Thought McCready played the post on that team? Which made him even more undersized. Did Jay Murphy and Michael Adams graduate the year before? I don't remember to many gimmes against those teams.

Michael Adams graduated the year before ('85) along with Dominic Pressley; Jay Murphy in '84. I clearly remember McCready as an undersized PF. Troy Bowers was the BC center, so If McCready ever played the 5 it would've been in an "emergency" situation, similar to Pointer playing the 5 for us.

You remembered incorrectly, Played center for 4 years as I thought :) :

You are completely wrong here and sorry to be the bearer of that news. If you can't see when he dribbles up the middle of the floor he get it *poked from behind or dribbles directly INTO a defender.

Dom is frightening when barreling down the lane without the ball or receiving it to a defender.

But congrats on bringing me out to make the kid look bad after the best game of his career. Mission accomplished. But I know what I see when I watch a game.

Big fan of the potential Amar has but he still looks lost out there in the flow of the game. He has the tools though. He spins the ball way too much on his jumper. That's one thing I've noticed watching him up close a lot during CA games. But the form is on point and I think if he avoids that crazy back spin he will hit a lot more.

Felix and CJ need a trip to the confidence doctor. They have the skills. Just need to put it all together.

Would love to see Amar in the high post. Play a little high-low game with CO or shoot the midrange jumper if defense lags off him.

Another great, dominating win. This team is playing incredible basketball right now.

One small item that could give us an additional boost offensively is PGIV buying into the extra pass and improving his overall offensive efficiency. It's weird, because he is clearly one of the most team-oriented kids we have, so it's not from a place of selfishness. But our (often elite) ball movement stops on him too much, he drives with his head down (especially on the break), and he is mostly just looking to shoot.

Unfortunately the numbers back this up, and don't support it as an effective approach. Of our first 6, only Obekpa has less assists. On the flip side, of those 6, PGIV has the lowest FG%, the only one in the rotation below 40% (by a pretty wide margin, 44% to 38%), but yet has the second most shot attempts on the team.

Phil does a lot of things well, and even if he's not going to shoot it at a high %, we need him to be a threat to shoot it (especially from 3) to keep defenses as honest as we can. But if these numbers continue this needs to be reeled in. With the strength of some of the defenses we are going to play the next 2.5 months (and hopefully beyond), offensive efficiency is critical and this is an inefficiency for us right now. I don't think we are far off on it, just an area to fine-tune.

I haven't clicked on the link but if you are silly enough to give it a minute of your time, don't blame Fun when you don't like what you read

Fans of irony will appreciate that I managed to work in a quote from Jon Swift: “When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him. ” Seems germane here as well.

Outstanding observation on Phil. His shooting over the past four games has been dreadful & he gets a ton of shots. I appreciate what he did at Syracuse, but net of those final makes, he was having a poor shooting night. As you noted, he must improve on the perimeter or take less shots. I am not a Phill hater, but question why he merits so many attempts in light of his performance to date. With the team doing a better job penetrating and kicking to open perimeter guys, he will have his opportunities. Hopefully he takes advantage of them in BE play. If not, it is not heresy to suggest he get less minutes.

I do agree with you, but also am an advocate that basketball is much more than a collection of stats, which you are well aware of. In terms of our guards in particular, I wouldn't bet any serious money that a single one of them would nail a wide open three at any point in the game, no less crunch time. We had a bunch of serial ugly offensive sets yesterday, with Jordan hitting the side of the backboard, and Harrison and Greene clanking short possession threes. With these guys if we look at shooting percentages we will drive ourselves crazy because they are not likely to improve. However, they are passing the ball extremely well, playing unselfishly on offense for the most part, and our guards are more than happy to give it up on the break to Pointer or Obekpa busting it downcourt trailing or leading. Throw in some outstanding team defense (that I didn't think these guys were close to being capable of) and we have team that is taking scrappiness to the Billy-Martin-level of we don't want to fight this team.

I knew you would take that quote and run with it! "Confederacy" is a great book and maybe like the author JKT, the esteemed Dr. Fun will not be appreciated in his lifetime.

The wackiness that is BigEastBoards is beginning to grow on me... I doubt if there is another NCAA blog that comes even close. The one Weasels song I heard reminds me of the stuff Jello Biafra did with Lard. There's an endorsement!
