J
Another great, dominating win. This team is playing incredible basketball right now.

One small item that could give us an additional boost offensively is PGIV buying into the extra pass and improving his overall offensive efficiency. It's weird, because he is clearly one of the most team-oriented kids we have, so it's not from a place of selfishness. But our (often elite) ball movement stops on him too much, he drives with his head down (especially on the break), and he is mostly just looking to shoot.

Unfortunately the numbers back this up, and don't support it as an effective approach. Of our first 6, only Obekpa has less assists. On the flip side, of those 6, PGIV has the lowest FG%, the only one in the rotation below 40% (by a pretty wide margin, 44% to 38%), but yet has the second most shot attempts on the team.

Phil does a lot of things well, and even if he's not going to shoot it at a high %, we need him to be a threat to shoot it (especially from 3) to keep defenses as honest as we can. But if these numbers continue this needs to be reeled in. With the strength of some of the defenses we are going to play the next 2.5 months (and hopefully beyond), offensive efficiency is critical and this is an inefficiency for us right now. I don't think we are far off on it, just an area to fine-tune.
Outstanding observation on Phil. His shooting over the past four games has been dreadful & he gets a ton of shots. I appreciate what he did at Syracuse, but net of those final makes, he was having a poor shooting night. As you noted, he must improve on the perimeter or take less shots. I am not a Phill hater, but question why he merits so many attempts in light of his performance to date. With the team doing a better job penetrating and kicking to open perimeter guys, he will have his opportunities. Hopefully he takes advantage of them in BE play. If not, it is not heresy to suggest he get less minutes.

I do agree with you, but also am an advocate that basketball is much more than a collection of stats, which you are well aware of. In terms of our guards in particular, I wouldn't bet any serious money that a single one of them would nail a wide open three at any point in the game, no less crunch time. We had a bunch of serial ugly offensive sets yesterday, with Jordan hitting the side of the backboard, and Harrison and Greene clanking short possession threes. With these guys if we look at shooting percentages we will drive ourselves crazy because they are not likely to improve. However, they are passing the ball extremely well, playing unselfishly on offense for the most part, and our guards are more than happy to give it up on the break to Pointer or Obekpa busting it downcourt trailing or leading. Throw in some outstanding team defense (that I didn't think these guys were close to being capable of) and we have team that is taking scrappiness to the Billy-Martin-level of we don't want to fight this team.

Agree our spacing, passing & unselfish play to date stand out. We do generate a lot of our offense off pressure, deflections and turnovers. On defensive end, I must commend our attention to detail & becoming much better at help defense and closing out on shooters. As you noted, a "scrappy" bunch indeed.

I have to admit that I never was a big Phil Greene fan but I think his contributions this year are being overlooked. He won the Syracuse game for us which was our biggest win in four years. He seems to shoot the ball better in the second half and when the game is on the line. He made a number of shots in the second half against Long Beach State when Jordan was sick that let us open up the lead. I would prefer that Harrison takes more shots as the season goes along but we are stuck with six players for now. I was hoping that Myles Stewart could knock down a few more shots but that hasn't happened yet.

With Phil, I'd hate to change too much at this point since it all seems to be working overall for the team. However, I believe his most effective roles on offense are to either drive the ball to the basket for a layup or a floater in the lane, or setup for a three ball off the pass. When he dribbles to try and create space for a jump shot, he's not giving himself the best chance for success.

I can't complain about anything we've done so far, but would love for Phil and the team to continue to figure out what they each do well and play to those strengths. That will serve us well as the competition gets tougher.

Will be interesting to see if The Torch lobby's for an extension on their web site (www.torchonline.com) after the team's 7th straight win.

Saw Roger Rubin and Kieran Lynch, among others, state on Twitter, that this is our best start since '85-6

But I'll admit he's doing his best to deserve an extension. Not there yet though.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. The results this yearnare great but if Jordan and Obekpa leave as expected, our future is scary. We need recruiting results badly. Although I'm not confident we get someone better anyway

From one neurotic worrier to another: Can we just enjoy this year, and worry about next year when it comes?

Oh I'm fully enjoying this season. But we can't just blindly base the future on this year's results and start handing out extensions. Lavin's job is to produce results on the court and also recruit.

FWIW.... Dr. J and his comments re being recruited by Coach Carnesecca (next to last paragraph):

http://www.redstormsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/111914aab.html

Carnesecca says he learned another lesson when he refused to sign Julius “Dr. J” Erving. Carnesecca failed to sign Erving three times, he said. His first opportunity was when Erving was playing at Roosevelt High School on Long Island. Erving was unknown to most colleges. There were three schools that were interested in Erving’s services – Hofstra, UMass and St. John’s. Back in those days, St. John’s prided itself on recruiting local talent and he was only a ride down the Southern State Parkway. Willis Reed, who was an assistant for Carnesecca in 1979, even offered to recruit Erving, but UMass invited Erving and his coach over to their campus for a visit and his college fate was sealed, Carnesecca said. The second opportunity game when Carnesecca was with the Nets. Erving had just finished his third year at UMass when he showed interest in signing with the Nets. Carnesecca says he felt his services were more needed at UMass; Erving signed with the Virginia Squires. Then after his first year with the Squires, Virginia was having financial problems and offered Erving to the Nets for cash, Carnesecca declined.

“It was one of my most brilliant moments,” Carnesecca said sarcastically. “I felt that wasn’t the right thing to do at that time. I was wrong, because what I was doing was stopping a young man from making a living.

Hey Fun if Willis was going to help Looie recruit Dr J it would have been as a member of the Knicks which I don't think is feasible.
Willis did get one good recruit to play for him out at Creighton though

Moose, better than you think just like this year is WAY better than you thought.

Imagine Lavin were a cook. In his first season he threw the already prepared dinner in the oven and heated it up. Maybe added some salt. It was pretty good, but not quite satisfying. In the second season he served excrement sandwich. In the third season he made a presentable main course but the Robert Morris Humble Pie for dessert left a bad taste. This year he's made a delicious appetizer. Why not eat the meal before judging the chef. Because looking at next year's ingredients this will be the last good meal for a while, the cupboard is looking bare.

Whether you want to believe it or not....Lavin has done a really, really good job with this program. He's had one losing season since he's been here, and that was the year that he had to replace virtually everybody. He has improved every year since that losing season. Last year we were a win or two away from the tournament, and this year he has us off to our best start in 30yrs.

What does the future hold for us? Who knows? But if we have learned one thing, its that we should never doubt Lavin when it comes to recruiting.....

Excrement sandwich? wow! Tough…
I think we are obsessive compulsive or perhaps suffering from PTSD after years of disappointment - this discussion (unfortunately or maybe so what) will never go away even if we make the final four.
Who knows the future? Only the shadow knows for sure for those of us old enough to remember the shadow, or remember bonomo's turkish taffy - slap it and crack it - , Mighty Mouse, the peanut gallery…mister greenjeans, gumby, let's see wht else…we like ike!
heading to Aruba this week next Monday my daughter marries…I'll catch the game from there…even check Aruba Today paper and report to your guys and gals on the coverage of the redmen redstorm johnnies whatever

Yeah don't doubt him because waiting until the spring is great idea. How many signing periods have gone by since we got a contributor? And the last contributor we got is giving everyone from staff to fans agita. This isn't professional sports. We can't just go out after the year and pick and choose some free agents. Well, get ready for, we are the youngest team in the country. Even yesterday after the game Lavin mentioned to Marshall how young we were the past three years.

You're wrong again. Remember I was the poster who said SJU could win 20 games a year for 10 straight years and fans would still complain. Nothing about Championships or even Final Fours. But instead of this 13 to 15 to 17 talk lets be a consistent performer. That's all I want to be. Lets be a consistent basketball team. Strive to be Gonzaga, VCU, Wichita, even Memphis when they were in C-USA. If a top 3 recruiting class took 4 years to materialize whats going to happen this time around?

- Not counting the fall 2014 signing period where we got Doughty even though we have loads of ships to offer.

- Spring 2014 period we have what contributors?

- Fall 2013 period what contributor did we get?

- Late 2013 is Rysheed Jordan. Thats the last contributor we got.
