Transfers

Can someone be so kind as to explain to me why we should be pursuing Shane Rector who got barely any pt at Missouri other than the fact that he plays bball and is originally from
New York?
Is he the level of talent we believe will keep us in the top third of the new Big East which is where we should want to be ?

Agreed, and reflective of my feelings; to use a pool analogy - it just seems like we are poking and hoping with no real plan in place.

Missouri transfer Shane Rector is focusing on four schools for his next landing spot.

A 6-foot-1 point guard from The Bronx, Rector is considering St. John’s, Boston College, La Salle and Drexel, he told SNY.tv.

“Those are the four I’m considering right now,” he said. “I’m still open to new stuff, though.”

No visits are set but Rector is planning to take trips, including one to St. John’s, after the dead period.

“Visits are going to be set up soon,” he said.

A onetime Rutgers commit, Rector averaged just 4.6 minutes last season at Mizzou.

Much worse than Branch.
Doesn't make sense unless we're afraid we won't have a point guard next season...

I'm not thrilled with the prospect of adding Rector, but I could see a place for him. We lose our top three guards to graduation and possibly Jordan to the draft. Even if we replace them all with top talent, they will just be freshmen. It is good to have some carryovers...not everyone has to be a star. A kid like Rector could be serviceable and not scare off big pg recruits like Briscoe.

Mizzou won 23 games. Their three leading scorers were all 6'5 guards: former 5-star recruit and early NBA draft entrant Jabari Brown (19.9 points, 1.9 assists) third year guard, Jordan Clarkson (17.5 points and 3.4 assists), and fourth year guard Earnest Ross (14.0 points, 1.4 assists). Both Clarkson and Ross will be back next year due to prior redshirts in their careers. It also appears that another freshman point guard, Wes Clark, a top 75 player and #14 ranked PG in the 2013 class, was ahead of Rector on the depth chart (20 mpg v. Rector's 4.5). They also added a top 75 6'4 guard for 2014. It's worth mentioning that the coach that recruited Rector, Haith, has left Mizzou as well.

That's a valid point. If we're looking at Rector for depth next season, I think we can do better, but maybe the staff sees something in him that I don't. It just seems like an odd time to look for backup point guards. I wouldn't want to do anything to scare off Briscoe. And if Rector was willing to sit on the bench, he could do that Mizzou, why transfer?

If we finally go to a system where we make a conscious effort to have our bigs help space the court, having a guard who practiced with the team this year carry over in to 15-16 could be of great value.

The better question is why go to Mizzo in the first place? They already had a top 75 pg committed in the same class and were loaded with SGs. I wonder who advises these kids. It looks like Rector sees the writing on the wall at Mizzou. He knows he can't beat out the top 75 PG, but maybe he can use his experience to stay at or near the top at a school like St. John's in 2015? He is probably better off going to La Salle, but I hope we do add a transfer guard to help ease the 2015 transition. I really don't want three newbies in the back court regardless of how talented they are.

We need to stay ahead of LaSalle and Drexel, that's why.

Why did people want to pursue Lawrence?

You can’t just look at a guy’s freshmen stats and assume that because he didn’t play a lot a kid is not good enough to play at this level. At the same time it doesn’t mean that he is either. But as we know outside of being an absolute stud freshman a lot of good freshman at high majors do not play a lot for a variety of reasons.

But some of you are comparing a first year player with a 2nd or 3rd year player transferring. It is not the same. Because if after 3 years Rector was averaging similar minutes and points then I agree with your assessment.

And if SJU simply wanted to stay ahead of Drexel why is SJU recruiting Briscoe and Diallo and Mitchell and Sampson none of whom would even waste their time considering Drexel?

Or afraid there's no backup PG for 15/16. Not every recruit can be a starter, right?

They do on redmen.com. Maybe someone can start a rumor that he is a diamond in the rough or NBA draft prospect. No middle ground on this site.

Not sure why this was so hard for posters to figure out. He's not coming as a starter.

Plus, if we wait until after signing Briscoe to find another PG, who will want to come when there's a top kid ahead of him? :cheer:

Before we all jump the gun (if that can be avoided), where was it said that St. John's is pursuing Rector. It sounds like he is pursuing us (PGM included). I hope we do look at him but everyone starts getting hysterical because a kid says he wants to visit us.

I also find it kind of funny that the general tone from posters is that he is awful because he only played 4.5 minutes as a freshman for a team that had three 6'5 upperclassmen guards as leading scorers (one five-star) and a top 75 freshman pg to boot. Maybe this kid is the 76th best player in the class of 2013 :)

PS and completely off topic but to those who might be thinking if Rysheed jumps next year it'll mean STJ had a successful season and that'll make it worth it I present Exhibits A & B, Jordan Clarkson and Jabari Brown, thought they did make it one round further in the NIT than STJ.
