Transfers SJU May Get Involved With

I guess my hope that the staff had a grad transfer locked up who didn't want to announce he was transferring for whatever reason until the semester ended is running out of steam.

IF Johnnies sign Beverly and Rooks I would say we had an adequate transfer haul. With added beef we would have more fouls to burn, more rebounding strength, and some capabilities to defend bigs. In addition, a guard to offset a future loss of one of our guards. Top 25 team in my estimation. They gotta get them though. We then need to learn to play defense, which should be off-season focus.

To try to add some perspective to the apparent recruiting failure SJU fans are feeling, I took a minute to look at the available scholarship for 2017 at the other Big East institutions. The results are as follows:

School Scholarships Available for 2017
SJU 3
Butler 1
Creighton 3
DePaul 2
Georgetown 4 (Hoping for Kante)
Marquette 2
Providence 1
Seton Hall 1
Villanova 2
Xavier 1

I will also point out that most of the schools also had targets to fill those vacancies.

It seems to be standard practice to leave open at least one scholarship even at the risk of "burning" it. I suppose it would be given to a walk on, admittedly that is not much more than a guess.

3 open spots at this time, is a bit concerning, but it is not 4 Hoyas fans.

How many did each of them have available on Jan 1, 2017.

I'll help you start your list:

St Johns - 0

You think if Slice was still here he would have been able to deliver us one big kid from somewhere capable of playing 8 -10 minutes a game????????????

Who did he land while he was here?

Lets not get carried away thinking the staff will sign Beverly and Rooks, Give me 1 of the 2 and at this point I will take it. IMO we are getting neither.

Heard today it will be only one additional guy. Let's see if they land 1

Spin it any way you want, the lack of positive news in the past few months has us trending the wrong way. I include the Ewing hire as another problem for us, as I believe he will be tough to recruit against when it comes to the bigs.

There is a 6'8, 240 lbs. forward on campus right now. Attention Darien Williams........playing time is calling.

Don't you mean guy or gal? ;) :)

He had plenty of PT here even before. Still think they can change his mind? I think that ship has sailed. We still need one big guy from somewhere.

Given the conundrum the staff is in with our front court if Darien Williams still leaves what does that tell you about how he feels about Mullin and staff?
A lot of negative vibes out there.

I'm feeling plenty negative that we couldn't land one single big guy, offering tons of PT and a quality team surrounding them. We should have had an easy time picking up one decent quality grad big man. Not sure why we shot a blank here...

I think we definitely need another coach/recruiter here. We are playing shorthanded right now. If Rice is that guy, I'm fine with it. He's got lots of energy, good practice coach and would have us defending well. He's also got good contacts and can effectively recruit. I think he's changed too.

Something is out of Kilter. Plenty of playing time available, a good team to play with, playing in MSG, and still we line someone up and they bend right around us like we aren't there.

Pretty sure he liked the staff until he was pushed out the door. Would you go back and help them out once they realized they made a mistake?

or

It's also possible they they still don't want him back. A few extra ppg couldn't hurt, but maybe staff doesn't see it that way?

I wasn't in the room to overhear any conversations, though. Maybe it went down a third way.

I think the poster that said we will see in September is right on. Actually I would say wait until our first game next season.

Top 25 team? I doubt they would be a top 25 team even if they signed the best big in the 2017 class or via transfer. Improved yes, Top 25 team no way.

Maybe he asked to transfer because he felt that he could play between 23-30 minutes a game somewhere else. Think about this:
Simon PG
Ponds Wing
Lovett Wing
That leaves 2 starting positions between :
Ahmad
Yawke
Clark
Owens
There is the slight chance that Williams thought he might get lost in the shuffle.

The fact that Paultman gave a "thank you" to this post gives me pause, since that lends credibility to that thinking, but that is just an implausible thought process, even for a young kid like Williams. Most of those players DO NOT compete for the minutes he would have had. Except in the most extraordinary case, a successful team needs a few big men to shuffle around; he would have been, with Owens and Yakwe, one of those guys. Coming off his performance this year, he would have had a leg up on Yakwe and another new big. No, the more plausible is that he thought (like we did) that the staff was bringing in someone to compete for those minutes (at least one additional big) and he did not want to have to compete with 3 other guys, being it is his final season. THAT makes more sense to me.
