Transfers SJU May Get Involved With

The fact that Paultman gave a "thank you" to this post gives me pause, since that lends credibility to that thinking, but that is just an implausible thought process, even for a young kid like Williams. Most of those players DO NOT compete for the minutes he would have had. Except in the most extraordinary case, a successful team needs a few big men to shuffle around; he would have been, with Owens and Yakwe, one of those guys. Coming off his performance this year, he would have had a leg up on Yakwe and another new big. No, the more plausible is that he thought (like we did) that the staff was bringing in someone to compete for those minutes (at least one additional big) and he did not want to have to compete with 3 other guys, being it is his final season. THAT makes more sense to me.

There is a 6'8, 240 lbs. forward on campus right now. Attention Darien Williams........playing time is calling.

He had plenty of PT here even before. Still think they can change his mind? I think that ship has sailed. We still need one big guy from somewhere.

Given the conundrum the staff is in with our front court if Darien Williams still leaves what does that tell you about how he feels about Mullin and staff?
A lot of negative vibes out there.

Pretty sure he liked the staff until he was pushed out the door. Would you go back and help them out once they realized they made a mistake?

or

It's also possible they they still don't want him back. A few extra ppg couldn't hurt, but maybe staff doesn't see it that way?

I wasn't in the room to overhear any conversations, though. Maybe it went down a third way.

Maybe he asked to transfer because he felt that he could play between 23-30 minutes a game somewhere else. Think about this:
Simon PG
Ponds Wing
Lovett Wing
That leaves 2 starting positions between :
Ahmad
Yawke
Clark
Owens
There is the slight chance that Williams thought he might get lost in the shuffle.

I don't believe for a second that there was any pushing involved. Other than that, I like my theory better as stated previously and that being that he wants to play the perimeter (where he played before St John's) and the staff wanted him to play interior so matches up with this thinking but considering that Clark is probably a better shooter and Owens wants be be a midrange shooter and get bounced around in the middle, that leaves him again as an interior player, first if not exclusively since pretty much every other player is a shooter. He's got some size but if I were him, I would not want to be a "banger" considering that (I) was already banged up and been under the knife several times. Remember anyone, how quickly his first season ended for us?

I think he initially got PT reluctantly because the staff felt he'd get injured. They got him in at a desperate moment. He went for it and made it through. I was anxious every time he got on the floor this past season. That is not a knock on him and I appreciate the skill he showed. Showed some good skill, played hard and we were so desperate for any sign of life there that it was a pleasant surprise. That said, even if he returned I still think we need a big banger probably more on defense than offense but both would help since we need that balance on offense. I'd prefer two or three actually.

And he ,ay well have been right. There are 200 minutes in a BB Game

Ponds - 30 minutes
Lovett - 30 minutes

Simon - 25 minutes
Ahmed - 25 minutes
Clark - 25 minutes

Yawke - 20 minutes
Owens - 20 minutes

= 175 minutes

If Missini plays 15 that'd leave 10 for Williams that now presumably will go to Alibogwoith.

Yes Patrick is well-known to be a fearsome recruiter (insert eye-roll here)

You are probably right. Top 50 all time NBA player who will try to sell Georgetown as a great destination for big men with NBA potential, with himself, Mutumbo and Alonso Mourning serving as proof. What person in their right mind would believe that pitch? If all else fails, he would have to rely on old John Thompson for advice. What does he know about recruiting centers? Expecting that Ewing has a lot to sell high school centers, from projects to prospects, is a reasonable analysis, even if it comes from a SJU fan on a SJU message board.

IF Johnnies sign Beverly and Rooks I would say we had an adequate transfer haul. With added beef we would have more fouls to burn, more rebounding strength, and some capabilities to defend bigs. In addition, a guard to offset a future loss of one of our guards. Top 25 team in my estimation. They gotta get them though. We then need to learn to play defense, which should be off-season focus.
Lets not get carried away thinking the staff will sign Beverly and Rooks, Give me 1 of the 2 and at this point I will take it. IMO we are getting neither.

Heard today it will be only one additional guy. Let's see if they land 1

Steve Lavin at Fox heard we are in great position to land 2 preferred walk ons. He said the strategy worked wonders for him.

Maybe the grad transfers are doing the same math.

Anyone ever hear what happened to Craig Victor who was dismissed from LSU in December? Solid pf averaged around ten about 7 rebs. Could be a sleeper

Seriously if it doesn't say PF/C 6'9"+, 10 rb/40 min next to his name then it IS likely that any addition is going to struggle to get meaningful minutes and grad transfers are usually looking for meaningful minutes.

just from stats id jump on him.

Agreed. This young man meets my height and weight prerequisites. Since he also plays basketball, I say kick the tires.

So far he has visited North Carolina and Clemson. Is scheduled to visit George Washington this weekend.

That kid Darien Williams looks intriguing. Where did he play last year?

Was it the 3.8 ppg that intrigued you the most, or was it the 2.6 rpg?

Well, one might argue that if we had three Darien Williams to put in a 40 minute game, his stats would be above average as compared to a single big man playing the same position.

He's selling hot Avon products door to door with Zach Brown.
