Transfers SJU May Get Involved With

It is still too early to evaluate the transfer in transfer out process in its entirety but certainly the decision of Ellison to leave has to be viewed as a plus. He played considerable minutes for the past two seasons and after seeing the talent of Simon all year in practice he makes the decision to sit out a year somewhere else.
Had he stayed would have been a bad sign.

I disagree. It is a sign we are recruiting players with unrealistic expectations of themselves vis-a-vis their long term desire to improve within the team concept. So as not to ruffle North's feathers, he needed four years because after two years he continued to make poor decisions on the court. Mullin was OVERLY generous with his playing time but was smart enough to start pulling him after bad decisions this season. Apparently that did not sit well with Purvis who got nervous over his son's game management. I understand it had nothing to do with Simon having great practice sessions. I want players willing to fight for playing time unless they are a 5 star McDonald's AA and even they sit on the bench patiently at Kentucky, UNC and Kansas. When your 3 star players demand more than impact players I say "don't let the door hit your ass on the way out".
Of course more diplomatic fans here would say " Good Luck". I have little patience with those same players who directly affect the 4 year plan because when you have 3 in one year it leads to recruiting scrambling and thus, our current situation.

Please do not worry about ruffling my feathers. All I ask is that posters please do not break forum rules. I did not call you out for breaking forum rules nor have I deleted any posts in a long time. Constant negativity is not a breach of forum rules.
I have gone on record as saying I don't want any player to leave but I don't share your opinion as to why Malik left. Perhaps Pervis was / is upset with Coach pulling his son after a poor play but he cannot be upset with the amount of pt his son got at SJU. He got more pt than he would have gotten at any other power conference school. He is smart enough to réalisé that both Ponds and Lovett will each play a couple more minutes a game this season as they have a year of experience under their belt and that Simon and Clark will each get a minimum of 20 Minutes a game, which Minutes would directly cut into his. He made a smart move for himself as he will sit out a season, get stronger, improve and perhaps even get better coaching, who knows. But he will be a better player in 18 months from now. Too bad we did not have the luxury of red shirting Malik 2 seasons ago.

Steven Enoch, the Yukon big man transfer that many on this board thought was not worth pursuing, is currently on a recruiting trip to Louisville, per Jody Demling, their beat writer

If he's good enough for Louisville, he's good enough for me
It's amazing how many GM's, who think know it all, post on this site

Duquesne transfer Isiaha Mike tells me he will visit SMU this weekend and also plans to visit Oregon. - Rothstein

Pretty sure we were looking at this guy. Doesn't look like he's interested.

Yeah, scratch him off the list

There are no decent big men at this stage of the game. That is why we spent a leisurely day with Nikola.

You can't think of any other reason why we spent the day with him?

If we haven't offered, as has been stated by reliable posters, then we are most probably hosting him as a favour to his coach who usually has high ranking players. No big effort on the part of the staff to do a favour to a very important judo program

Unless he goes to Harvard, I don't think Malik Ellison will ever see the minutes he played at St. John's ever again. Of course we all hope he does well wherever he lands but on a good team, and I believe we have a chance to be a good team next year with some frontcourt muscle, he would be in the second rotation whether he sits a year or not.

If Nikola is coming from a great JC Judo program he is just the man we want to do battle for 15 minutes a game. ;)

It seems a lot of coaches are hosting Nikola as a favor. How many coaches push a 7'1 stiff on major programs without it impacting their credibility?
Maybe you are all right, pass on him but he is huge! Jarred Vanderbilt who is 6'8 and signed with Kentucky is standing next to him on their visit to TCU. The kid is huge. Perhaps a slow motor or very slow development but he is intriguing.

Even it's something as small as the coach whispering in Maher's guy Juiston's ear and telling him "maybe check out St. John's, they have a lot of minutes for you," then the visit was worth it.

There will be plenty of kids in the future who end up there that we'll want, so scratching the coach's back a little is a smart move and the nature of the game.

#SJUBB targets to watch:

Zylan Cheatham, 6'9, SDSU, 2 yrs left, 9.1 PPG & 6.3 RPG

Ed Morrow, 6'7, Nebraska, 2 yrs left, 9.4 PPG & 7.5 RPG

Yes, please.

The problem with playing the transfer game is that there's not much time to get all your ducks in a row. But if for example Matt were able to land these guys along with Dixon, and still bring in a credible fifth-year big man, then he's earned his raise and we have absolutely nothing to complain about until the season starts.

You underestimate the worst fan base in all of sports.

I'd be happy if he just brought in a BIG along with Kante.

The benefit of playing the transfer game is that you have a short period of time against lesser and much fewer competition to sell the recruit on your school , all of which favours the great salesperson.
Like it or not Matt got his raise because we live in a free market economy and our head coach and AD understand the need to pay Matt what our competitors would pay him.
If he can pick up one of the 2 possible transfers we are discussing as well as Kanté I will be very pleased. Will it help us much next season no it will not , but Dixon and other transfers will ensure we will not fall off after next season.

I'd be happy if we got those 2. It would make sense too in that the SGSU guy says he wants to play outside more so have him come in to replace Ahmed and work on his outside game for a year with Mullin and Mitch and I love those Morrow numbers. That would get 2 thumbs up from me.

Oh and add Heron too :)

Having three or four guys sitting out next year makes for a depleted roster. An injury or mid-year transfer and we're done. Also, bringing in so many transfers has to be difficult on a team's chemistry.

I for one hope that we have at least 11 eligible bodies next year, 10 of which are at least serviceable. In terms of 2017 recruits, my ideal would be two sit-out transfers, a freshman big like Kante, and a decent fifth-year big that is immediately eligible.

Damn.....this was my guy. Feel like he would have been a perfect fit. Oh well.

Can't do much about injury, but I don't think you can build your roster fearing that they'll happen. You just need to do what's best for the team next season and beyond. I don't think carrying only 9 or 10 guys is bad next season. And if you lose a guy midseason from a short roster, it's not a PT issue, it's a coach issue. And I don't think the staff is made up of guys who will yell so much that it would drive a kid away.

I do like that we are going after Ed Morrow. With I-Mike out, Morrow is #1 on my "transfer-sit" list.

That said, at the risk of re-beating a twice dead horse, a grad transfer big is by far the most crucial need. It would be a real shame to waste a year of Lovett, Ponds, Simon, Clark and Owens with nothing else in the paint.

I think Morrow should be near the top on most of our lists. There are some huge bodies in the Big 10 and those are nice numbers.

I suspect the big for next season is still in play. I also think no news so far is good news (great news, in fact), because if we end up with a juco who could barely get off the bench, it means we flamed out completely.
