Transfer Portal

I’m stepping back into Redman Talk after a long absence, but in the meantime I’ve enjoyed reading these posts…about basketball and life. A truly great forum. But I’m piping up to say that the Posh departure doesn’t sit right with me. The Big East rookie of the year\defensive player of the year is good enough, if properly coached, to play a major role on any team. Especially when he’s given three years of the kind of sweat, passion and loyalty that this kid has given. If you’re the incoming coach, no matter how great your resume, you ought to be sensitive to that. Between Pitino’s rep and Repole’s $ we can certainly get enough studs in here to win…..and discard kids the minute it suits us. But what kind of soulless shit is that?

How quickly we forget that kids can leave whenever they want. What’s happening when a new coach comes in is perfectly fair. Kids never respected that scholarships were 4 year plans. In fact I shouldn’t call them kids. They aren’t kids anymore.

I respect your loyalty to our players like Posh and many from previous years. It has been stated on numerous threads that the vast majority of fans want(ed) Posh to stay. In fact, coach Pitino did not ask Posh to enter the portal. Posh did that on the assumption he would have a lesser role. MullinsRevenge or JoeSchmo's lack of endorsement had nothing to do with the decision.

To me, the kids who give their hearts and soul to a program are the walk-ons and kids at the very end of the bench that, while not as talented, partake in the same grueling practices every day with zero benefits other than the uniform.

What those fans who want to give Pitino the benefit of the doubt are saying regarding players like Storr, Wusu, Stanley, Pinzon, and Posh (who could return) is that they would have to show the new coach that they were willing to "compete" for their position against other players with the goal of fielding the best combination of players suitable to the coaching philosophy of Rick Pitino.

On a deep team, 15-20 minutes is a lot of minutes. Obviously every player wants to play every minute of every game. Competitiveness and testosterone drives that "drive". You're confusing that with "heart and soul". Reality is, in today's world of college basketball, players are a greedy, self-centered, and a me-first generation that bolt at the slightest challenge. They're not giving their heart and soul to Alma Mater. She died decades ago.

Be truthful to yourself and to other fans and identify the biggest weaknesses on this past year's underperforming team. To me our backcourt was a disaster. Blame CMA for its structure but the on-court play and decision-making was well below par with other Big East teams.
Poor shot selection and ball movement were two other issues. Those all emanate from the backcourt.

Now you and a few others are saying you want Posh to have that same role guaranteed to him with ringing endorsements. We should only blame CMA and Andre Curbelo. You know that is a stretch of imagination.

We, the fans, demanded radical "change". That change didn't mean as some misguided fans seem to think, take most of the same players and coach them into NCAA tournament contenders.

We are either going to get behind this coach or continue our own dysfunctional behavior of tar and fettering coaches because the players they recruited didn't turn out to be part of the problem. Of course they were.

I think Posh made a hasty decision not to compete for his job. He's never going to compete in the NBA. He should have focused on his education and perhaps some day be a coach. He should have learned from past St. John's guards like Omar Cook, Shamorie Ponds and others.
Great post, Rocket. Thank you.

I never sais that he should have the same role guaranteed, if you read the post that I was referring to you would understand. I have no idea of what conversations took place between Posh and the new coaching staff. For more than 60 years I have rooted for St Johns and whoever was coaching, I am definitely not going to stop now.

Additionally, where do you get the nerve to tell any young man what he should or should not so. Posh ain't your child.

100% correct!

I do find it funny how some fans spin it depending on the coach though (not directed at you Moose).

Sometimes it happens right away (Pitino), sometimes it happens after a year (Anderson).

It may seem harsh and unfair but it isn't; it's life. A new coach has the right and a responsibility to improve team performance and communicate to players what he expects. And players finally have the option to leave if they do not like the roles the HC envisions for them. That's all good.
I hope Posh returns, competes, improves as a player, and becomes an essential piece in a rising St. John's program.

Every player has to be in good academic standing to be eligible to transfer.....especially to one of the nation’s most demanding academic institutions like Michigan.
No question Michigan is a excellent Large Public University . And , he is transferring from Alabama , which has all sorts of different Standards when it comes to their BB and Football Players . I’m assuming he didn’t get the Playing time he wanted at , either Texas Trch or Alabama ? As my post said , I wasn’t directing it to specifically this young Man , who I no
Nothing about but , rather the 700 plus players who are now in the Portal . Transferring Schools poses all sorts of Academic issues . Like a C at Alabama might not be transferable to a Course at Michigan . I think at the bottom line , is all this free transferring making a mockery of attending College ? In many cases , it certainly is …

Regarding Posh: anyone who doesn’t appreciate the fact he bled red isn’t a real fan. I think after that freshman year we all had visions of an all-time Johnnie bouncing through our heads.

But, the coach who recruited him is gone, and rightfully so. Him and the new coaching staff didn’t click for whatever the reason, we don’t know. Nothing about this is bloodthirsty or wrong. It sucks for the simple fact things didn’t work out the way WE all would have liked. I wish things could have worked out and he got a senior year, a chance to go out the way we thought he might, but they almost certainly will not. But, with a coaching change, it is what it is, there should be nothing overly surprising about this. And, he is certainly within his rights to leave also, which sucks too.

Posh was invited to stay and chose to explore his options. I think it’s 50/50 he comes back with a slight lean to returning.

I doubt Pitino told him his role would be reduced just like I doubt he’d ever guarantee him a role.

We don’t know what was said. It’s okay to speculate but to attach feelings to that speculation doesn’t seem fair.

I’d also add that I think it’s a good thing for new coaches to be as transparent as possible about how they see a player fitting in going forward. That allows the player to make an informed decision.

With Posh-Pitino my feeling is that there is a communication issue that can easily be resolved.

Don't mean to butt in here... butt... isn't this what you (and most on here) are doing, telling grown man what they should say and not say? Just a bunch of random people with a bunch of random opinions!!
