Transfer Portal

Posters stating that Posh, who gave his heart and soul to this program for the past three years, should be happy coming off the bench and playing 15-20 minutes a game is definitely not an endorsement that would make him want to be here. Reread some of the posts.
Panther - I hear you, and I’ve been as pro-Posh a poster there is forever. What you are reading is the nature of message boards for college-pro sports. And I can tell you firsthand that ours is much tamer and more respectful than most every other I’ve read. The fact there were multiple threads and then a separate thread created wishing Posh well speaks to that. Anyone reading all these posts in the aggregate sees how much that young man was liked by our fan base generally and most of us wish him luck and would welcome him back in some capacity.

I respect your loyalty to our players like Posh and many from previous years. It has been stated on numerous threads that the vast majority of fans want(ed) Posh to stay. In fact, coach Pitino did not ask Posh to enter the portal. Posh did that on the assumption he would have a lesser role. MullinsRevenge or JoeSchmo's lack of endorsement had nothing to do with the decision.

To me, the kids who give their hearts and soul to a program are the walk-ons and kids at the very end of the bench that, while not as talented, partake in the same grueling practices every day with zero benefits other than the uniform.

What those fans who want to give Pitino the benefit of the doubt are saying regarding players like Storr, Wusu, Stanley, Pinzon, and Posh (who could return) is that they would have to show the new coach that they were willing to "compete" for their position against other players with the goal of fielding the best combination of players suitable to the coaching philosophy of Rick Pitino.

On a deep team, 15-20 minutes is a lot of minutes. Obviously every player wants to play every minute of every game. Competitiveness and testosterone drives that "drive". You're confusing that with "heart and soul". Reality is, in today's world of college basketball, players are a greedy, self-centered, and a me-first generation that bolt at the slightest challenge. They're not giving their heart and soul to Alma Mater. She died decades ago.

Be truthful to yourself and to other fans and identify the biggest weaknesses on this past year's underperforming team. To me our backcourt was a disaster. Blame CMA for its structure but the on-court play and decision-making was well below par with other Big East teams.
Poor shot selection and ball movement were two other issues. Those all emanate from the backcourt.

Now you and a few others are saying you want Posh to have that same role guaranteed to him with ringing endorsements. We should only blame CMA and Andre Curbelo. You know that is a stretch of imagination.

We, the fans, demanded radical "change". That change didn't mean as some misguided fans seem to think, take most of the same players and coach them into NCAA tournament contenders.

We are either going to get behind this coach or continue our own dysfunctional behavior of tar and fettering coaches because the players they recruited didn't turn out to be part of the problem. Of course they were.

I think Posh made a hasty decision not to compete for his job. He's never going to compete in the NBA. He should have focused on his education and perhaps some day be a coach. He should have learned from past St. John's guards like Omar Cook, Shamorie Ponds and others.

I do not know this young man or his skills . What I’m saying is not directed to him personally but , 3 Schools in 3 years is a pretty good example of what the Transfer Portal has become in causing Players to transfer so freely . There is no adhesive to bind them to a Team or School ., And , sadly , while there are no Stats on what the Academic standing is of any of those players . After all , doesn’t

the NCAA promote the idea of Student Athlete ? How does a player attend to Academics if such widespread transferring is occurring so frequently ? It’s a question , not a answer .

Every player has to be in good academic standing to be eligible to transfer.....especially to one of the nation’s most demanding academic institutions like Michigan.

Frankly, I am disappointed in two players who are choosing to leave because they can't handle change - Posh and Storr. Storr because he needed to be coached up to reach his potential and Posh who said he wouldn't run from a challenge. Both could have easily challenged for starting roles but are obviously not up to the "challenge". I wish them luck but it is they who chose to leave.

My take is that players like Posh, Wusu, Stanley and Storr were all starters under Coach Anderson and felt entitled to that same role under Pitino. For the Curbelo and Jones critics please note that they handled their demotions well.
Jones lost his dad in the midst of all the upheaval.

That would have been a coaching challenge even for Pitino as that combination was a big disappointment and part of the poor construction of the team.

I am a fan of the school sports teams whether they be soccer, baseball or basketball. I am a big fan of players that play to their potential and are willing to grow as players and adults. For the most part we are not talking about kids anymore in the teen sense but young MEN.
Players who are 21, 22, 23 are not children. They need to be eager to learn from the best and adjust to change because life will be full of change and challenges.

The first year would be a difficult one for any coach who took this job at a school with a losers culture and mid-major basketball management.

As I said when Pitino was hired:

"
The only player guaranteed to start under Pitino would be Soriano. Storr is hard to replace because of his upside and could be a star under Pitino. He is even keeled and a good team player.
Everyone else, including Posh, would have to show much more than they did this past season.
Posh showed a lot of bad decision-making and took a few steps back. Wusu is a solid 6th man.
Everyone else can be replaced."
I get being disappointed with
Storr a little but not Posh.

For most of these kids, right or wrong, they’re banking their entire future on basketball.

Posh is a rising senior with aspirations of playing professionally. If Pitino told him — hey kid, I’m likely going to recruit over you and I can’t see you playing more than 15-20 minutes a game, could you really blame him for portaling?

I get that Pitino is a hall of fame coach who would likely make Posh better regardless of PT. I also get that Posh has another year of eligibility after next year.

But basketball players have a brief shelf life. Posh will have an opportunity to get major minutes at a good program next year if he so chooses. I’m not sure I would act any different than Posh in this situation assuming I’m right about what Pitino told him. Can anybody on the site say with certainty they would have acted differently?
