Transfer Portal

When Marquette’s Shaka Smart talks about how his program shuns the transfer portal, he knows it sounds like he’s slamming those who do use it. That’s not his intention. Smart is one of just two high-major coaches who has not brought in a transfer in the first two cycles of the new immediate-eligibility world (Tom Izzo is the other).

____________

When Smart first speaks with a recruit, he sends them a 27-page culture document that is like the Bible for his program. He wrote it after his only losing season in his 14-year run as a head coach — in 2016-17 at Texas — and the purpose of sharing it right away is to make sure Marquette is recruiting people who align with what they want.

“Our three core values are relationships, growth and victory,” Smart said. “So it’s not like really revelatory, but believe it or not, there are people that play basketball that don’t value relationships. There are people that are really, really good players that don’t take their growth seriously, or don’t necessarily honor what goes into winning.”

Good for him. Going to be hard to keep to that practice the way college hoops are going, but I really respect both Izzo & Smart as coaches.

He did get Kolek from the Transfer route but , I guess they forget him . Reigning BE POY .

Isn’t this the third cycle? Soriano year then Curbelo year, now this year.

Kolek was an immigrate transfer in. Didn’t sit after freshmen year in the A10 and has played last two years at Marquette.

Not an undergraduate but an immediate grad transfer. Ironically, I think the two best players he’s brought in to Marquette were transfers.

Article is still standing and I haven't seen anyone comment on whether its valid? These past few years are all a blur.

I believe that O’Max Prosper was also brought in by Smart as an immediately eligible transfer (the immediate eligibility rule was passed in 2021 so this is the third year).

Again the article speaks to since NIL has come into play. So this year and last year. He had transfers when he got to MW as has been mentioned.

Quite the journey for this guy. Doubt we’re the school who makes room but we have obvious connection and he can play.
