Can anyone site even one example where this has been done. Got to believe once you are on scholarship you always count against the limit. Follow recruiting religiously especially football and haven’t heard of it being done and programs are always jettisoning players to stay at the 85 limit haven’t seen a one converted to walk on status and there are guys at state schools making millions and tuition is dirt cheap.
I’m fairly certain that Doug McDermott became a walk-on his senior season to make a scholarship available for super super senior Grant Gibbs to use.

SJU hired a guy who wants to get the program in a position to play with the big guys. If he wants to make a move on highly recruited kid at someone else’s expense, I’m ok with it. More than ever, college hoops is a business.

Not sure how the rules work in athletics but believe McDermott may have been allowed free tuition anyway as the child of a University employee
I actually just read the story - Greg had to shell out $44k for Doug’s tuition that year. They wasn’t eligible for free or reduced tuition because Greg hadn’t been employed by the university for 5 years at that point.

This is a tightrope here. Roster is filled. If you ask a kid you recruited and offered a scholarship to then become a walk on word gets out and it affects recruiting in the future The hard line approach is Jenkins I offered you a scholarship on the condition you graduated in May. You didn’t graduate so offer revoked. But this approach is also problematic. How many movies have there been where guy asks a girl to prom. Then a prettier girls appears and he tries to dump the original girl for prettier girl. Never works out
I think you can stop worrying about the hire now.

Maybe if someone who wasn't pissy about Pitino from the start said this I'd be more apt to consider it.

It literally works out for Kansas for every year where they push players out the door constantly to make room for better ones but hey man you do you.

How many movies do you see where the hot girl goes for the boy ?

Heck in real life 83 year old Al Pacino is having a baby with a hot 29 year old

And I strongly suspect we won't even be pushing anyone out the door, unless it's a door that leads to a redshirt year. I think either Ayo or Davis would benefit strongly from saving a year of eligibility on what has quickly become a stacked team.

True, but redshirts still count against the scholarship count so either way somebody is either going to have leave or lose their scholarship.

The only thing that is “problematic”, is that we haven’t advanced a round in the NCAA tournament since the year 2000. Zero problematic with what Pitino wants to do here.

Players rescinding scholarships and walking on has certainly happened before, mostly by players concerned exclusively with winning, players for whom TEAM is more important than I. Not the norm for sure but neither is your doomsday scenario. The couple of instances I am familiar with it was a joint, mutual decision with coach and player, not a coaches dictate.
