Thanks, now that you mention it I think I did read that. Well, we now have a rock-solid defense for doing so unless NCAA wants to treat football and basketball differently.
Wow......just checked out the Iona message board to see their take on Jenkins. The first thing that jumped out at me is that a majority of that board is downright pissed at Pitino for leaving. They also feel like the Iona kids are going to get recruited over and fell pray to "Slick Rick's salesmanship".
In any event their feeling on Jenkins seems to be that he will not graduate n time and need a waiver. That said, I personally wouldn't be so sure he doesn't graduate.

I don't get how they really thought Pitino would be a lifer there. I know there was all that "I want to make us the Gonzaga of the East" stuff, but what was he supposed to say?
He was gone the second he started griping about one-bid leagues and not being able to reach a lifetime contract there. Not our fault that Iona fans don't seem to know how to read between the lines.
Jenkins (assuming he's eligible) and Slazinski are done after this year, so no recruiting over them. And neither Davis nor Ayo would have been promised anything. Slazinski himself said that Pitino makes no guarantees regarding PT.
Iona fans need to take a deep breath. The brief Pitino years have them an inflated sense of self worth.
Coaches have left programs much more successful than Iona fans could ever dream of becoming. Roy Williams left Kansas to go to UNC.
Pitino leaving a one bid MAAC conference for the Big East is not a stretch.

The semester has been over for weeks. Wouldn’t it be pretty clear by now whether or not Jenkins did graduate already or still has some credits to complete

Clear to Jenkins and the staff I'm sure. And probably to Iona fans who may or may not have heard his named called at commencement. Maybe immediately not to everyone else due to privacy issues, though.
Hopefully there's some clarity soon.

Those positions have basically been walkon or preferred walkon positions prior to NIL.
But now NIL is paying for them at some programs and the prior practice is probably spreading.

That's what I am assuming.
But when Iona fans say he's ineligible, does that mean he's a class or two short and only ineligible now, or does it mean he's way short and has no way of finishing before August? One would assume staff would have made other plans if it were the latter.

I'm guessing Wilcher fits the role of the other plans being made.
I am pretty sure that Pitino would know whether he would graduate or not (even with summer classes). The only unknown is if Jenkins gets the second transfer waiver. I am sure there are 3-4 recruits who could go to walk on (and get NIL money, such as the grad transfers)
Can anyone site even one example where this has been done. Got to believe once you are on scholarship you always count against the limit. Follow recruiting religiously especially football and haven’t heard of it being done and programs are always jettisoning players to stay at the 85 limit haven’t seen a one converted to walk on status and there are guys at state schools making millions and tuition is dirt cheap.

I never read of a scholly player being converted to walkon status to open up room to bring in more players even in NIL world of last 5 years

This is a tightrope here. Roster is filled. If you ask a kid you recruited and offered a scholarship to then become a walk on word gets out and it affects recruiting in the future The hard line approach is Jenkins I offered you a scholarship on the condition you graduated in May. You didn’t graduate so offer revoked. But this approach is also problematic. How many movies have there been where guy asks a girl to prom. Then a prettier girls appears and he tries to dump the original girl for prettier girl. Never works out
