Transfer Portal

Agree. Can't have it both ways. Let's call it what it is: a new professional sports league. Actually leagues, when you consider the various sports. Having said that, I'm still not on board with whole NIL concept. I'm cool with anyone making as much as the market will pay them. What I'm not cool with is donating to make a college basketball player(or anyone for that matter) a millionaire.

Something very very wrong with this premise IMO. And for those who say "well we can't compete with other schools if we don't kick in some money for NIL", that's all good and well and you're free to do as you wish, but I ain't contributing to a system that I think is highly flawed.

I'll buy my tickets, food, beverage, merchandise, etc, but I got way more needy causes to donate my hard earned money to.

Skip to last part, very interesting commentary:

Branham: "It's definitely a crazy place. It's very hard to keep up with everything because it happens extremely, extremely fast. So you're always on your toes. You're working all day, every day. Basically the rumors and the stories you hear, most of them are, I would say, pretty close to accurate. NIL deals, the alignment of destinations before you even hit the portal. That's extremely common. I was talking to a coach just last week, and they're talking about 'if I have to ask about a player in the portal, I'm not going to be getting him because if that deal's not done already, I had no shot because it's done elsewhere.' So that's basically the way this thing operates.

"The one thing that I think is going to need to be addressed more than anything is with all this NIL, so much power is held by people that shouldn’t have the power of calling schools (and making deals for players). And that shouldn't be the case. I think this is a conversation probably for another day. But something I keep talking about with a bunch of coaches, and just people within the industry, is this is going to have to go towards a way where this stuff is actually written on paper. We need to have a paper trail and we have got to actually see and control the market a little bit better.

"Right now, people are just lying and calling and saying 'hey this school is offering this amount of money.' And that’s just not true. Then other schools counter and it’s inflated. So (a paper trail) also puts protection on the players. They put some contracts onto the table for these guys to sign up to two-year deals, protects the player, protects the coach, also puts pressure on the coach by signing the kid to a $300,000 deal. He doesn't perform necessarily year one, I got him for a second year, and I've got to pay him that money regardless. Now the pressure is on me to develop him.

"Also at the beginning stage, it's pressure to evaluate properly because right now there’s not much value on properly evaluating guys. You take a bad player from the portal, you can shove them right back in the next year. It's just an absolutely chaotic situation going on in there. And every single situation is different. And that's not to say every situation is bad. There's obviously a lot of kids who need a fresh start or the opportunity wasn't there and it's good for them to drop down a level. We see that all the time.

"I think you can bring a little bit more order and that's going to be beneficial for the players and the coaches and everybody involved. Players are being promised a certain amount of money, they get to a school and that money is not there. That shouldn't be happening."

We currently have one combined center and traditional power forward. I can’t imagine a power 6 situation that can offer him more time.
I can't see Pitino playing Soriano and Ware at the same time for extended minutes especially considering the major minute wings in Luis and Taylor aren't really knowdown shooters. Would be some spacing issues with that type of lineup.

Ware would certainly get some minutes here in year one and be a starter in year 2 but can't see him playing 20+ mpg with Soriano around.

Pretty simple. NCAA can’t limit what an athlete earns.
but the NCAA CAN say if you earn over $XXX, you are not an amateur &
can’t participate in NCAA events. A reasonable limit like 50-100K/ yr ??
Not sure ncaa ca do that under O’Bannon.

I hope he develops into one but he attempted less than 2 3s per game last year. He attempted 4x as many 2s as he did 3s last year, not counting the times he got fouled at the rim. His game right now is slashing and having both Ware and Soriano on the floor at the same time is just going to clog the lane for him.

He has good shooting numbers but took only 1.7 a game last tear. For context that’s .4 more than curbelo and fewer than any guard or wing we had last year.

What does Soriano do at UK the last two years behind Oscar Tshiebwe? I think we’re talking 6-8 minutes per game. Ware would have been 30 mpg here. I don’t think it’s out of the question he takes 10-12 mpg at center and plays another 10-15 at PF with 15 starts depending on the matchup. He played his best with Tshiebwe IMO…it just wasn’t the best look for UK with a really good 6’9 Toppin and a million elite big wings.

Daimion Collins is a 6’9 PF and was the #12 RSCI ranked player in the class of 2021 (basically Mgbako), and he played less minutes than Ware, averaging less than 2 pts and 2 rebounds a game both years.

Slazinski has always been a platoon starter — even at Iona.

Lack of competition and guard play have to figure in. Luis was just 5-26 (19.2%) in the 16 games senior PG and leading scorer/assist man, Noah Fernandes, missed. Taylor played basically his whole career with the situation Luis was left in missing Fernandes.

You’d also expect Luis to improve as a soph and his form looks good. So it all be a wash in the end % wise.

This puts pressure on the staff for a full court press for the last two positions.
Valium prescriptions being ordered in bulk for St. John's fans.🤢🥵🥶🥺😰

That’s good stuff but he took 20 3s over the 11 other games. Still lower than anyone other than curbelo.

I like his form, but it is more of a set shot. Don’t think he will struggle making 3, but don’t figure he will be a high volume guy.

I think he starts, despite not being a shooter he is mobile enough to guard on switches. He would give Joel weak side rim protection. Soriano is not a good rim protector, he would of entered the draft if he was.

I agree 100%. Meant to write “it could all be a wash.” If he’s taking 3 treys a game next year he’s either getting great looks or we are in trouble.

I personally don’t see a path for him to start in 2023-2024 with a healthy roster.

"It wasn't the best look for UK" is exactly why I think it won't work here. Would need to do a Jenkins/Dingle/Alleyne lineup assuming Dingle comes or Dunlap at the 3 for spacing not to be completely wrecked with Ware and Soriano on the floor together.

Dunlap is not getting a lot of minutes this year.
