Transfer Portal

It is now unequivocally a Professional sport. Sad.
You are correct. However it always was, just packaged differently.

Prior to the NIL, players were at the mercy of the NCAA who passed rules that lacked common sense and were even heartless.

When you can suspend a player for accepting $100 dollars to buy groceries for his family while making hundreds of millions off of his participation in college sports was unconscionable.

Instead of leveling the playing field a bit, those rules have caused the pendulum to swing in the opposite direction and the cause unnecessary chaos we are experiencing today.

Meanwhile the NCAA just washed its hands of all responsibility.

The NCAA was, is, and always will be an example of a useless behemoth organization.

My suggestion is to take the NCAA profits and put them in a fund. Student athletes would have funds allocated to them for their future (such as a retirement fund) based on years of service to their school.

It’s interesting to see the effects of the Transfer Portal plus the full impact of NIL this post season .
And , it’s not all good for the College Basketball game or., the Colleges that field teams . Those 2 things in combination are a troubling Duo that makes a mockery of the NCAA BS about Student Athletes .

What’s the last count on Players in the Portal ? It’s well over a 1000 for sure .

Bench players , as well as Stars are transferring at a record pace . Some are looking for a big payday , others looking for more PT .

Since the College game has evolved to this current situation , why continue the mockery of educating Athletes for a year or 2 and then see them transfer out ?

Why not just sign up Players , put a uniform on them and not require any Classroom attendance , at all . The 1 and Doners are already doing that . They go to class for the Fall Semester , register for the Spring semester and then , never go to class .

It’s just a matter of time before the BB players take the route of the College FB players and say , “ I’m not playing in the NCAA’s because I don’t want to risk Injury and miss out on Millions of Dollars in the NFL or NBA .” “ I have already established my Abilities for the Pro Scouts and don’t need to play anymore .”

Unless things change with the Portal and NIL , College BB won’t be the game as it is intended to be .

College basketball is now being run by the 5 families.
The Power Five schools that always did " their thing " under the table. Cosa Nostra = Our Thing.
The NCAA are the corrupt "authorities" who turn a blind eye to million dollar NIL deals at Kentucky for the continued right to collect big payouts from television deals.

I’ve heard many in the business of college sports say it’s not NIL and it’s not the transfer portal that has adversely impacted college sports but the combination of both of the changes coming into the game at virtually the same time.

It’s going to be interesting to see how coaches succeed (or don’t) in this landscape.

Take Izzo for example, he takes very little transfers (I think just one in the last few years) and while I’m sure MSU isn’t hurting for NIL money, I can’t imagine he takes in any kid where that’s his biggest requirement.

The question will be can you coach up a bunch of basketball junkies enough to win big?

Check out the last sentence of this article. Just another thing to consider when you’re talking about record number of transfers. 43% didn’t make rosters last year. If that’s the case moving forward and 2000 kids enter the portal each year, 800+ are doing it in hopes they can catch on anywhere and have their bb dreams continue. (Of course there will be a talented few that don’t make rosters for other reasons/off the court problem)

That 43% is high but doesn't tell the story of what % were subtly encouraged to move on by the coach.

All the more reason a scholarship should be guaranteed for 4 years by school (regardless or same or different coach) as long as meeting academic and code of conduct standards.

I am certainly not pretending that but if you don’t see a HUGE difference with the advent of NIL and the transfer portal, we just disagree.
think a lot of the chaos is the timing of the one-time free Transfer (portal) combined with the legalized payments.

I’ve had enough . I am issuing my own Portal Deadline for our Prospects who have taken a visit to St John’s this Recruiting Cycle .

That Deadline is 12 Noon today , EDT .

If those Recruits do not commit by that time frame . Woe be upon them
.

A Deadline is a deadline ! Enough is enough . We are long suffering Redmen fans and at our age , cannot wait indefinitely .

But , I am flexible in extending it until the end of the Portal period or , the end of time . Which ever comes first .
