Transfer Portal

Can go round and round forever on this issue, but I agree that any gripe Ivy players have is with the Ivy League for choosing not to play during that free COVID year. In any event, it's not going to change now.

Iā€™m sure close to if not entirely completely.

But still then they would get the Ivy degree, and then two years to get a masters degree free from another university. There was no way to do the extra year perfect, ncaa did a decent job and the Ivy decided to not play during the free year.
Ivy degree and master's would be no different from a COVID kid graduating from anywhere in three years and getting master's through a transfer though. I don't think that should be listed in unfair advantage column for Ivy kid.

We don't have to keep going back and forth about it though. In summary, I think it's stupid that they don't get the fifth year of court time. I'd bring my case to the NCAA if I were an Ivy kid.

But one year of Dingle is better than none I suppose. šŸ˜

The Ivy + masters I described would be 6 years. Your scenario would be 5.

I think any lawsuite would have to go to the IVy league which prohibited them from playing the year every other conference did. Not the Ncaa.

Ok now we can stop going back and forth šŸ™ƒ

Thank the hoop gods!
Lol.

Iā€™m pretty sure the extra year was given because they canceled the NCAA tournament and people were unhappy.
Not really. For 20-21 there were still lockdowns and other restrictions in many states. The NCAA simply said I know many people are still scared and uncertain so we will not penalize kids who choose to NOT play in 20-21.

BTW-Pro sports did that too. The NFL had several players opt out without penalty for the 2020 NFL season. Donte Hightower comes to mind for the Pats. Without penalty meaning they would not be fined or suspended for failing to play because obviously contractually you can't just decide not to play when you are under contract.

For me, college basketball is really a struggle to maintain enthusiasm for. The portal is a bizarre universe for kids and advisors to leverage more money. It also is destroying the mid level programs and in time will lessen the number of upsets that makes the Dance special.

Kids of course deserve some compensation and were treated unfairly for years in that regard. The NIL ā€œcureā€ to me was poorly thought out and in its current form only benefits the usual elite suspects.

All in all, the Portal and the NIL model in place currently is destroying the game. Yes, coaches could always break promises to kids, move and get better compensated, but the above elements in concert with that are destructive to me, as an average fan.

It is now unequivocally a Professional sport. Sad.

Totally agree. College hoops has been my favorite sport for many years. Not sure whether that will continue absent some meaningful changes to this mess. Maybe it's partly a result of Knicks being good and enjoyable to watch for the first time in years, but the NBA is starting to seem a lot less complicated and at least I know I can root for these guys for a few years.

It is actually a hybrid of a professional sport.
Colleges still cannot pay athletes to play. Outside of the $5,900 schools can give athletes for vague academic performance, athletes can only be compensated by entities not affiliated with the university.

These kids are still amateurs in every sense. 96% don't have the talent level to be marketable in American professional leagues. There are only a couple of hundred that have the skills to opt for the NBA draft. Only 60 get selected annually.

If anything, it has become a truly unprofessional sport in that there are no hard rules governing the relationship between the athletes, the universities and the sponsors.
True professional athletes have real name and image recognition in the general marketplace. Most college players, especially prep players who haven't even enrolled, have no celebrity status outside of their fan base at specific schools.

Compensation being brokered to these players is nothing more than signing incentives to play for a particular school. In short, it has become a legalized pay-to-play scheme that used to be under-the-table deals with rich boosters. The schools with billionaire boosters will entice the most talented players. Not much has really changed except for what used to be under is now above the table but the table has to be off-campus and technically not related to the university that you are legally bribing the player to sign with in order to get the compensation.

I will add itā€™s killing high school kids that arenā€™t say 100. A lot of the other kids have no idea of their future until summer.

College hoops is now starting to suck. Money while a gift, diminishes the good in things. Not to be philosophical, the NCAA needs get a hold and of this runaway train, before it loses its essence.

Would not have much faith in doing so, but Charlie Baker is the real deal. Hope itā€™s not to late.

Dingle looks smooth as butter. I'm gonna say he also played in a structured system, which he would play in if we're so lucky to get involve and land him.

Sign me up!
To be different I would like to see someone miss a shot or get called for a foul on a hi light video.

Don't know, but he faced tougher competition in the WAC and excelled.
My concern is this is his 2nd transfer.
Would he need to get the 'more difficult' waiver to play this coming season?

His second transfer which a cynical person might say is why he mentioned ā€œfor his mental healthā€ in his statement to give credence to his waiver request.

Again totally agree that the "system" is horribly flawed and will destroy college hoops as we know it, if not fixed. But let's not blame the athletes, who paid or not, are still young men (and women) in many cases with minimal financial means for trying to maximize their NIL. They'd be crazy not to do so, except perhaps for that 1% who have a chance of making it in the league and will make big money if they do so.
