Transfer Portal

Yes but if a player opted not to play that year 2020-21 (forget about the conference) he is not being penalized per se, he still gets a 4th year.

The 5th year so to speak was only for kids who chose to play that year. The NCAA simply said if you play that year it is in essence a free year. You don't lose a year for playing and you don't lose your minimum 4 years of eligibility for not playing.

Simply put if you or your conference chose to NOT play in 20-21 you cannot simply transfer that "extra" year to any year you like. You don't lose your traditional 4 years of eligibility but at the same time you don't get a free 5th year down the road.

Exactly, that fifth year was 20/21. Can't just move it. Essentially they said 20/21 doesn't count. Doesn't count if you played, doesn't count if you didn't. You get to play 4 years plus 20/21.

PS has nothing to do with lack of tourney in 2020. That was considered a full season since post season play had started before the dung started hitting the windmills.

This will be an interesting thing to monitor. My understanding with the new NBA CBA is that you need to participate in the combine in order to be eligible to get drafted by NBA teams. So logically, if you're trying to leave early for the NBA but you aren't invited to the combine, you'd likely step into the portal instead. Portal deadline is May 11th, so I'm sure more will hop in in the next week depending on this.

Dingle, it has been written, wants to test the waters here. I don’t see his name so far.

Two deadlines:
NCAA Early Entry Withdrawal Deadline
The early entry withdrawal deadline for underclassmen that wish to maintain their collegiate eligibility:

Date: May 31, 2023
Time: 11:59 p.m. EDT

NBA Early Entry Withdrawal Deadline
The early entry withdrawal deadline for draft prospects:

Date: June 12, 2023
Time: 5 p.m. EDT

That's not quite what it says. What is says is if you are invited you have to participate to be draft eligible. If you are not invited then you are still draft eligible but it is directionally indicative of your draft prospects. And nothing can stop anyone from trying to be an undrafted free agent, or of course going international. In fact it makes me wonder. Say you're projected to be the top pick but you don't want to play for the Pistons. Can you skip the combine and be a FA? Can your agent discuss FA contracts before combine day to gauge the market? How much would Wemby be worth on the open market? Sly little work around but not sure if that works or if it would pan out.

I always was under the impression that the top rated draft picks skip the combine and NBA doesn’t bother inviting them because it is more geared to those that need to prove they are draft worthy or to at least increase their stock to be drafted higher. The Wembenyama’s and Henderson’s probably don’t get invited (wouldn’t want to risk injury and don’t need to prove anything as a prospect and these considerations come from both sides).

That's why they changed it in the CBA. It is in effect 2024, so not this year.

Clearing space for someone!
Yeah this is not a good sign for us landing Mgbako sorry to say. Don't know much about Jr but I remember the Kyle cuffe days at sju and he was a solid player. Maybe junior wants to follow in dad's footsteps ? Wouldn't mine taking a look at him if we don't grab the big fish

I don't think this has any bearing on Mgbako and Kansas, I think they had room for him already.

Only real upside is Kyle will probably apply for a medical redshirt and if granted would give him 4 full years left of eligibility (he already redshirted his 1st year and then played only 2 games last year before getting hurt).

But he is not the proven scorer they need to round out this roster. I think Fordham would be a great fit.

Just no room for him here now, unfortunately. Funny to say but Cruz Davis is in the way lol

They have two open slots and now have room for both Dickinson and Mgbako.
