Transfer Portal Mania

I came back this year after a very long break as a season ticket holder. I tried hard to get more invested in the game. SJU struggles aside I do enjoy going to the games but the sport is completely crap now. You can't keep up with this stuff when each year its an overhaul. It's sad.
Agree, lack of continuity and not seeing kids develop over time is tough to experience. Kids obviously deserved compensation for a long time and NCAA ‘s mantra of “student athletes” was complete bs. That said, there does not seem to be a happy medium. I only watch NBA during playoffs when they play defense. I sense I will treat college hoops the same way soon.

Could not imagine rooting for a mid-major team these days. Even if you get a stud, you know he's gone to the highest bidder in the Power 6 at the end of the year.

Yup, just ask Coach Martin at UMass
Even worse, I don't think they are pure mid-major. I see them in the gray area between high and mid. And kids' parents would still remember their Camby-era success. So if they have these problems, most of the schools in D-1 are F'd.

NCAA has a knack for turning everything they touch to absolute crap.

I get the sense that in many cases, the "student" part of "student athlete" is complete BS.

Substitute overwhelming majority for many and you are closer to reality. Remember when players didn’t have the required grades to be admitted or when players were dropped when their grades didn’t measure up?
Those days are long gone.
Come to think of it when is the last time anyone has heard the phrase He’s academically ineligible?

Good outside shooter but not a physical player or defensive ace. The team revolves around Tyler Thomas, an incredible volume scorer not afraid to take big shots.
I was impressed by his strength and athleticism. Can’t pretend that I know about his defensive ability though.

Think Dubar had 23 against us and looked pretty impressive. Saw him in a home game against Stony Brook where he had 10 points and wasn’t impressed. Given he started at Iowa St and transferred down at least one level think we need to do better than him.

I have heard A LOT of names floating around but i'll say this. Coach is right it's like Free Agency. I had a kid last year who loved where he was at and had no intentions of transferring. He was approached with a sizable NIL deal and left 6 hours later. Speculation over whose staying and leaving is great but for the right price 99% of all kids would leave and if they weren't 1st td talent in all honestly even though i loathe the way it's currently set up i'd advise every last one of them to take the money

Interesting, thanks.

Aside from 1st or 2nd round talent, what % of kids on rosters actually care about completing a college degree?

Assume most don't care about fit of school or coach either. Just $...

Sad.

Just a guess but I suspect the players who aren’t headed for the NBA and know what they make overseas wont set them up for life care more about getting a degree to give them options in life. Not all of them are thinking like that but I’d guess a fair amount are at least I hope so.

Pretty sure Ledlum is going to appreciate that Harvard degree. Closer to home, guys like Tarik Turner, who has a successful career in finance, I’m sure appreciate their degrees from SJU.

Like our roster last year there are going to be entire teams that are in the portal this year especially with how many major coaching changes are expected.

As of now it's expected pretty much the whole Ohio State team is going to be in the portal. It's also expected the whole FSU team is going to be in there as there's pretty strong rumors that the players there haven't been getting paid the NIL that's been promised to them. That's two high major teams already and it's still only mid February.

There won't be any shortage of options available it's just a matter of closing on one or two true difference makers and finding the right fits. Lack of NIL shouldn't be an issue here.
